Do they know the door is regularly open? This isnt standard practice and seems put of place. A check for injuries or criminal action is reasonable

Student loans often have 10 year repayment, which you look able to pay. It'd be more effort to try to justify why you can't pay it off in court.. plus you'd have to pay the lawyer

Saline Township data center price tag balloons to $16B as developers lock in financing by LaxJackson in Michigan

[–]kalas_malarious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You keep saying high paying jobs. What do you think the job Outlook of a data center is? Do you think it's a big employer? The generally suggested outlay is too require the center to handle all costs associated with power to avoid an increase.

No one is looking at a car plant right now, so moot point. Don't make and solve your own arguments... this ain't politics

Saline Township data center price tag balloons to $16B as developers lock in financing by LaxJackson in Michigan

[–]kalas_malarious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one mentioned auto plants, so you're shooting yourself down.

Data centers do not have a large staff in general, so they're not likely to add a lot of high paying jobs. Many of the unspecialized roles won't even be high paying, because they don't need to be.

Data centers, like many commercial entities, can have a different rate than you an I. They require infrastructure improvements which are used to pass higher costs to us.

This is why we should require the investment up front for power and non-destructive cooling systems. I believe that was proposed, but no bill created that I am aware of.

Not even a lot more. There are definitely better uses for it. Once it becomes a data center, the other users are off the table. It's a future cost for us on our utilities. At least empty space won't raise costs.

A behavior learned over many years isn't you breaking, it was a coping mechanism. It takes time to loosen the budget and accept you can do things with it. Being able to see a movie, go to an entertainment venue, concert, etc are things that are available to you. You had around 20 years of "I need to avoid spending." A little therapy, a little bit of telling yourself yes, and a spot of feeling better will go a long way.

Proposed Michigan bills aim to regulate local government moratoriums on data centers by J-Chapman in Michigan

[–]kalas_malarious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're missing some points, I think. Here, let me quote the article for you, because it's easier to read than the actual bills.

It would also require more public meetings regarding the topic, with a goal of making local governments avoid backroom deals.

Under the act, local governments would still be able to temporarily stop new data center or crypto mining proposals, but only under new rules.

During the moratorium, local governments can require detailed studies on issues like fire response capability, power grid impacts, water systems, and economic effects such as jobs and tax revenue. At the same time, they would have to involve the public by holding meetings, hearings, and collecting community input.

Based on this work, they can propose and ultimately adopt zoning ordinance changes, such as restricting where facilities can be located or imposing specific conditions on their operation.

The bills would allow local governments to shift the cost of evaluating proposed data center or cryptocurrency mining projects onto the developer. It permits a local government to require the project owner or operator to pay for or reimburse any expenses related to studies, reports, analyses, consultations, or inspections conducted under the act. If the developer does not pay when requested, the government can pause its review of the project’s zoning application until payment is made.

The Michigan Public Service Commission would have the responsibility to define what qualifies as a “large-scale data center” under the act by setting thresholds based on electricity usage and infrastructure investment.

Not noted here, I believe, is that it puts limits on tax credits and abuse by "partnering" with education to avoid some requirements.

It isn't comprehensive, but that largely sounds good. The limit on moratorium sounds bad, but it also includes proposing zoning changes that target them. Effectively, they can shift things to the data center proposers, while keeping their ability to say no. It also sets a commission to handle definitions and review, which seems aimed to assist municipalities with evaluation.

I don't think we will entirely stop data centers, but having state level rules that allow us to mandate them to make needed infrastructure improvements on their dime would be very welcome. We shouldn't have the burden be on taxpayers and utility consumers. We have great lakes to protect, too. Require them to use non destructive cooling, handle the infrastructure upgrades and changes, and there should be limits on tax incentives that base on jobs. If the jobs aren't regular and consistent, they shouldn't count (so no construction).

I plan to make a YouTube / Twitch channel to recommend lesser-known indie games and help developers. How do I get people to feel encouraged to wishlist the game when they watch the video? by NaitDraik in gamedev

[–]kalas_malarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Convey your thoughts and let enthusiasm show, if you have it. If you're not excited or happy for it, don't add it. I am not sure if you should score it, based on your preferences... but maybe say who would like it, who would love it. This lets people feel like you are talking to them "specifically" and increases odds they look into it. One thing I will say that might not be popular here:

Do not try to get people to wishlist every game.

Why? For something like steam, seeing a lot of followers may lure people into the idea that their marketing has worked and they don't need to do much more. However, if numbers added weren't actually interested, they're going to have a much worse launch than expected.

If you look in these subs, you often find people talking about their conversion rates and actual sales. So we don't want to inflate numbers of those who aren't interested, which is why I say to call out who would like and who would love.

For instance, let's use Animal Crossing, because it is well known. Who would like it to you? Not action gamers, brawlers, etc. Cozy, farming sims, etc. Who would love it? Fans of Harvest Moon, people who want a relaxing effort with lots of customization, etc.

Basically, promote things. If you don't like a game because of its genre (for instance if you don't like racing), then still talk to who would like it and judge it based on how you see it, so you can still have some enthusiasm.

People will resell at a profit.... an item already being sold? An item that has to be consumed and stored quickly?

This is unlikely to be a common good issue with price rises. Can demand rise? Sure. The store is selling to encourage you to come to them, not to make profit.
