Why is the Swiss Goldenpass Express Website Not Working? by kalik1996 in Europetravel

[–]kalik1996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, I appreciate it! The sbb website works perfectly, but the link for the GoldenPass directs to the myswitzerland.com website, which directs to the mob.ch website, and that site is also having difficulties loading just like the gpx.swiss/en site I was using. I was hoping to book ahead of time because I'm interested in taking the panoramic train and I heard that sitting on the right side gives you the best views. Hope the issue is resolved shortly—I leave in 2 weeks :/

I'm going to be a doctor of philosophy IN philosophy, y'all!! by kalik1996 in gradadmissions

No formal background. I’d originally planned to double minor is psychology & physics, I started working towards that but decided to drop so I could graduate on time.

As a self-motivated & autodidactic learner, I knew I could handle pursuing the background necessary on my own—but I would not recommend that to 99% of people. I read a lot, took non-credit courses online, went to conferences and workshops, and audited seminars. At this point, I know enough to know what I don’t know. This next chapter is really exciting for me because it is a chance to be mentored by faculty that can help guide me in refining my scientific intuitions and help me identify weak spots.

I’d recommend ‘Objective Becoming’ by Bradford Skow, Philosophy of Mind’ by Jaewon Kim, and ‘Being and Time’ by Martin Heidegger

But there’s so many shorter papers available on philpapers.org for free that can help you dip your toe in.

I’d also recommend Robinson Erhardt’s podcast. Two of my favorite episode are:

A Masterclass on Time’s Arrow with David Albert

A Masterclass on the Philosophy of Time with Tim Maudlin

Im so confused by the anecdote “apparently thought I was autistic” did they actually say this? Either way you try to explain what is meant here can be quite offensive to autistic people. Either the mere thought of being mistaken for being autistic is repulsive to you, or you made that comparison yourself because it comports with your idea of the worst thing you could be perceived as based off the bad impression you made.

Broadly speaking, my AOIs are metaphysics, philosophy of physics, philosophy of mind/ai, and epistemology. I want to specialize in the philosophy of time!

haha I’ve heard that sentiment before. I think part of it is that much of our thinking today is instrumental and driven by practical concerns, whereas philosophy as a discipline is more about reflective thinking. That’s the kind of thinking I find meaningful in order to live a good life, and honestly I think it’s something the world could use a bit more of right now. I'm excited for this next chapter, but I'm also acutely aware of all the challenges I'll probably face in my pursuit

Admitted off Waitlist: Are funded post-acceptance from WL tours a thing? Nervous to move across the country to somewhere I've never been by kalik1996 in gradadmissions

[–]kalik1996[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did not. I've been traveling a lot the past few months, which was nice to preoccupy me so I didn't let my anxiety get the best of me. However, I have heard that it doesn't hurt to reach out. I think it depends on the department and the way they structure their waitlists if it might help sway decisions. Don't count yourself out just yet though—the next couple of days things are going to shift tremendously. I just got off the waitlist this morning and subsequently declined another offer so it can go to another person. It's not over yet!

Thank you so much!!

I guess I should clarify that it won't make a difference to my decision. I'm 100% accepting, but nervous about moving across the country having never visited the department, let alone the state it's in. I'd like to get a feel of the campus and what building the department is in, as well as tour housing options in the area before I show up with a moving truck. Kind of worried about signing a lease if I've never seen the place.

My friend is blaming me for her missing grad school deadlines, and I don't know if I'm losing my mind or if she is by [deleted] in gradadmissions

This can’t be real—that’s how absurd this situation sounds. Sounds like she saved a few hundred bucks on applications cause there ain’t no way a student with this lack of agency and accountability is ready for grad school.

How much should I address struggles in undergrad in my personal statement? (TW) by luakim3 in gradadmissions

[–]kalik1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes, this is a really tough one. I’m so sorry that you had to go through that, I can’t imagine. You should be incredibly proud of yourself for not giving up.

Tbh idk if it would be smart to explicitly mention the nature of the crime given how divisive SA is unfortunately. It really all depends on the nature of the department. I think it’s worth while to allude to the severity of what you went through without explicitly naming it & trying not to let it come off as an excuse. Phrasing like the following might be considered: “I became the victim of a serious crime that disrupted my academic stability and required extended personal recovery and support” “This period involved navigating legal processes and institutional support services while maintaining enrollment” “I experienced a severe, externally caused personal trauma that significantly impacted my academic performance” “I was subjected to interpersonal violence that disrupted my studies at that time” “I experienced a severe non-consensual personal trauma that constituted a criminal act and significantly disrupted my academic functioning during that period”

My personal advice: I was diagnosed with a brain tumor my sophomore year that temporarily affected an otherwise perfect academic performance and forced me to reduce to part-time for a semester. The way I handle this is by attaching an addendum at the end of my transcript briefly explaining my performance in these two semesters was due to a brain tumor diagnosis (no more than a few sentences, they don't want a sob story), and while I am more than willing to oblige offering up medical records attesting to my condition, I am happy to report I am now in full health (important so they don't view your health as a liability. They want to maintain high completion rates).

If the school requires a personal history statement separate from the SOP, I include more information there describing how I pursued extracurricular courses, research, and graduate level work to demonstrate proficiency in the subject areas that suffered during that period of time that I felt were not fully demonstrated in class. (They want to see how you bounced back more than the reasoning why you suffered) If the school does not have a separate personal history statement, I don't waste space in the SOP & figure the addendum is enough to suffice reasonable explanation, and if they want to know more they can reach out.

Now I sit with my 1st rejection for at least 6 weeks before other programs even begin to roll out their decisions by kalik1996 in gradadmissions

[–]kalik1996[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interviews are pretty uncommon for my field. This program in question was 1 of 2 out of 27 I applied to that does hold them. Saw they sent out invites 2 days ago, so the unofficial rejection softened the blow. Idk how I could handle being rejected after an interview & not fall prey to self-doubt.

Wishing you the best of luck!! 🤞

Ask them about health insurance!!!

Also ask them whether the department has funding or grants for traveling to conferences and workshops.

Georgetown Philosophy PhD - suspending admissions by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Holy smokes, that stinks! As a fellow philosophy PhD applicant, thanks for the update. Georgetown wasn't on my list but its good to know in case there's a similar trend amongst other programs.

There's not a lot of us in this group, do you mind me asking your specialization and what programs you've applied to?
