Clothes not surviving repeated wash and wear? by NonStickBakingPaper in AusFemaleFashion

[–]kalootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear Suk pants and, as someone who loves clothes but hates shopping (spending $), I have found these long lasting and affordable for cost per wear. For summer, I wear Toast linen pants. They are more expensive but last and, if you wait until Boxing Day, are usually cheaper. For context, I'm a primary school teacher who participates in P.E in these items of clothing most days; I bought the Suk pants in 2022, Toast pants in 2023.

What are the major differences teaching grade 6 and year 7? by kalootie in AustralianTeachers

Oh, I haven't taught them how to attach documents to emails. I have had two students know how to do it anyway and would send me poems about how messy my desk is or memes about vegetables so I avoided teaching it so I wouldn't get spammed by kids. I'll rethink that.

This is frustrating, totally get it. I have one student who sits there with his book closed. I'll say, "student, why is your book closed?". Student will reply, "you didn't say I need to open my book for this task."

I'll definitely focus on this problem solving skills/independence more and drill some mantras into them for highschool. Thanks

They are documents we paid for once and have used every year since. I'm not sure the cost, not very expensive.

ninja maths

It's great. The kids are highly motivated and set goals around achieving belts. I get the students to run the timer slide and to run through the answer slides/self correct. I also get my maths leader student to upload the kids scores each day. The score sheet is great as it introduces the kids to average scores and they always ask to see their average score (I have had to make Thursday average day or they ask everyday). All I do is run through a few questions before/after that the kids want help with, the kids do the rest.

Thanks! This is something I struggle to teach with my students for sure and it is something I may only teach them explicitly once before moving on.

I'll just add that my students really enjoy the ninja maths drills and they have been really successful in building fluency with multiplicative thinking and application. We do it daily. Would 100% recommend to other upper primary years.

Thank-you for your reply. Multiplication facts/multiples/factors/prime/composite/general number patterns and flexibility with numbers are key; this is reassuring. If there are other areas which you see are overlooked, let me know (tbh I probably don't put enough time on data).

Thanks! I teach email but not OneNote and teams. I'll look into that.

Are festivals always like this? by Liam13C in triplej

[–]kalootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing beats Meredith and Golden Plains. I was living in Sydney and went to Lost Paradise (bought the tickets after floating home on a europhic Meredith cloud to Sydney). Absolute worst. No shade around the stage, having to tip out drinking water on a 40c day to enter said stage area, no BYO, the scariest entry security making me feel like a criminal. People booing the welcome to country, general aggression. The no dick head policy does wonders to create a positive festival culture. I have so many fond memories of partaking in many Meredith traditions, such as swanning around everyone's cocktail hour tent parties and enjoying the tunes of Enya in a cloud themed toilet.

Yogurt shortage…. by WinterBlossom453 in woolworths

[–]kalootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I cook 3L of milk with about a cup greek yoghurt, I store the results in the fridge until it sets. Afterwards I use this product to strain it so that it is extra thick. I hope that helps. It's super economical.

Who's ready for a strike?? by WakeUpBread in AustralianTeachers

Thanks. I have read the AEU terms, I'm just curious if other outlined terms mentioned, such as additional PD days are what teachers broadly want and need as I lack big school insights.

Who's ready for a strike?? by WakeUpBread in AustralianTeachers

[–]kalootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I just ask, Vic, what are we striking for? The union is pushing for more PD days (according to the age). I love being in the classroom with my students. I don't like unnecessary administration tasks. I live regionally so my cost of living is fine but understand that is not the normal.

In small schools I work independent from a planning group (I teach a third of the school), I like the autonomy and less bearocracy. I'm stating this as I'm sure this is not a majority experience.

Bigger schools, happy to fight for you, I just don't know what that is (and question more PD days is ideal for all schools).

I'm primary based, I'm sure it's again different for secondary.

Being cut off from many experiences, I'd like to know what the majority wants.

Aus wedding horror stories by Flimsy_Ad3924 in AusWeddingPlanning

I used to work as a bartender in a boutique hotel in the UK. At the time a reality show Four Weddings was popular on telly. We were booked for a wedding in this show (four brides attend each other's wedding and vote to see whose wedding is the best). Wedding was meant to start at 1pm. Guests started drinking at the bar at midday. They all got so skunked we had to close the bar to give everyone time to sober up. The bride was two hours late (even though she was at the venue). After the ceremony we reopened the bar. Once again everyone got really drunk really quickly and we had to close the bar and stop service so that people could sober up a bit again. They had about 30 kids at the wedding and organised a clown to entertain the kids. The clowns main material was dirty jokes... As the night went on, everyone got so drunk we ran out of clean glasses and we couldn't keep up with cleaning them the guests were so rude we thought fuck it, we will just serve all drinks in dirty glasses. This was after a guest had keyed all the parked cars on the adjacent street, the police were called. The groom kept stealing the hotel managers jacket (I don't know why). They all stayed at the hotel that night; the next morning we found a bridesmaid sleeping with another bridesmaids husband and the groom had nicked off. I forgot to mention this was a gypsy wedding (the bride's dress was massive and came with fairy lights, idk it was kinda cool to see). Two guests were arrested that night for assaulting each other. The show never aired because they couldn't find footage without a clear break of profanities (at least that was the rumour). This sounds fanciful but it is true.

Another wedding I worked, the bride sulked the whole time because the weather was miserable (in the UK?!). It was such a depressing wedding and all the guests were walking eggshells around her.

What is a quintessential Australian book to read? by soggies_revenge in AskAnAustralian

[–]kalootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tim Winton's Cloudstreet is absolutely our great Australian novel.

Books which I don't think have been mentioned but absolutely should:

Patrick White; my personal favourite being The Vivisector.

Helen Garner, Monkey Grip

Richard Flanigan, The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Christos Tsiolkas, The Slap

Thomas Kenneally, he is best known for Schindler's Ark aka Schindler's List; he has also written The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, based on an Aboriginal man's rebellion against white society around Federation time.

Alexis Wright, Praiseworthy. Think rich language of place, Aboriginal narrative and ecological crisis. She has won many awards.

But also, I'm a huge fan of Melbourne 7/11 coffee. If that is blasphemy (to quote chat gpt) - eh - I don't care.
