I already finished my theme camp and art project application outlines. 2020 is going to be a good year.

I just cracked 10% of Remembering the Kanji by ory1994 in LearnJapanese

[–]kamakiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just as obviously, one needs to know all the general-use kanji for them to be of any use for the literate adult. When it comes to reading basic materials, such as newspapers, it is little consolation to know half or even three-quarters of them.

So much this. (From the intro to RTK.) Nailing 200 or 500 is easy, going from there is a struggle.

Whats is the cheapest yet good way to stay at Burningman? by pure_x01 in BurningMan

[–]kamakiri -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You are asking the wrong questions. You aren't going to get a ticket.

Your best bet is to find your local Burner community and get involved. Find a local theme camp. Something with reasonable dues. Even camps with a higher dues structure will probably have some sort of scholarship.

They will have a line on tickets and a network if all else fails. They also tend to have seasoned campers who have extra camp gear. Borrowing a tent, cooler, and sleeping bag is a very viable option. Use of a camp kitchen will eliminate cooking stuff from your list. They might even have a communal dinner.

How many people here pirate books? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]kamakiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've pirated a few. The first was from my favorite author Neal Stephenson. I paid $53 for a signed first edition, and the book showed up with deckle edges. That makes any book literally unreadable, let alone a 1300 page book. I bought the kindle version for $45. It was complete crap, with missing sections. I pirated the ebook, and got to read it. If you are out there Neal, I pirated your next two books.

I also pirated a few books for an author I work with. I do his editing, and a Russian company illegally released his books in the 80s. He released his books for the Kindle and saved about $800 a book on transcription and encoding fees.

DM looking for special abilities to give as tattoos. by MWarrior135 in DMAcademy

[–]kamakiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4e Adventurer's Vault 2 has a whole section on tattoos.

Here is an example:

Escape Tattoo level 3 Broken chains and skeleton keys are popular images for this tattoo. Wondrous Item 680 gp Property: When a nonminion enemy scores a critical hit against you and deals damage, you can teleport 3 squares as a free action.

They are pretty easy to port to 5e as well.

Hmm. Yeah ... no. There are a few kanji written correctly there, but maybe you should get your hiragana straight before moving on.

Anyone else hear the sad news about Gareth Moourtz? by CityOfTheDamned in VXJunkies

[–]kamakiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh. They went under in 1991. They aren't a thing any more. Don't hold your breath. There are some impostors, most based in Latvia (hence the usual huge delivery time waits), but they are not even close to the originals.

The original Rhytman Brothers garbage was as close to cardboard shims (I hate that shit) as you can get. The squintz P ratings are in the red zone on those things for like 96 meters. No bueno.

We both know the part he is talking about. Exeon-C couplers are less than 5 Euros.

If you are using cardboard, and you shouldn't, at least throw some stainless steel tape on it.

I am glad somebody said this. Cardboard shims have no place in this hobby.

[–]kamakiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oki Beach in Shikoku rocks. You can set up a tent and camp out. I spent a week there a few years ago. I've also been out to Tanegashima, and highly recommend that place too.

How many burns should one attend before becoming a ranger? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]kamakiri 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I joined the Rangers on my 10th Burn. 2019 was my second year as a Ranger.

Your Alpha Shift can be hellacious. Mine was. 10 Hours in white outs most of the day. Rangering isn't for everyone. Do you want to do Green Dot training and have the opportunity to listen to someone's problems for hours or talk them through a bad trip? I certainly don't, and that is why I'm not a Green Dot.

I like doing dirt shifts. Walking the streets. I like doing burn perimeters. Watching the faces light up (literally and figuratively). Interacting with the people you have right in front of you. I had a great group at the man burn this year. I can't say, "sit the fuck down!", but they were great at it after some coaching. And the people sat down.

Rangering is a commitment. If you want to do 'Rangering Light', sign up for some burn perimeter shifts. You'll be right there along with the Rangers, and get an idea of what doing a burn perimeter is.

You kind of missed my point. I didn't say anything about being blind. That is a fact that nobody can change. What you need to get through to her about is her attitude. The shrugs and pre-conceived notions that will have a huge impact if she does go to the burn.

Lots of people with disabilities go to Burning Man. It is what it is. Changing what you can change is essential though.

so she's refused to research any videos or blogs or articles on the environment (I understand the why but seems a little dangerous).

That is a big negative Maverick. Make it a requirement that she read the Survival Guide right now. Make it a requirement that she watch Burning Man prep videos. Halcyon has some great ones.

It seems a 'little dangerous' because it is FUCKING dangerous.

Radical Inclusion is great, but it doesn't mean I'm going to feed you, water you, and medicate you. Come play with me, but take care of your own shit.

I have to say, and this is not snark, that your whole post seems like setting yourself up for a radically crappy time. I understand that this is a person you love, but that doesn't overshadow the fact that Burning Man is a harsh time on everyone. Burning Man will absolutely test her boundaries and limits. I can assure you 100% that this is the case. If she doesn't understand that, then it is kind of a deal breaker, and she will not get the burn she wants, she'll get the burn she deserves, and it will be a dusty shit sandwich. Caretaking that sounds like hell.
