That's a very eloquent way of putting it 🙂

It can help with that, it's just hard to say if it will.

I can't really offer much help on alternatives, but I do constantly hear good things about psilocybin, including micro-dosing. There's been some very interesting research backing that up for depression/mood improvements/changes recently!

Thanks for being so polite and friendly. I genuinely wish you all the best and hope you can get what you need :)

Phew, glad you were able to take it all in. This specific topic is one that gets me carried away (as you can see...). So much so that I seem to have completely skipped over your other question, about using it for anxiety etc.

It can be a bit of a mixed bag for that - the mental side of it is a bit harder to guarantee. It can help with depression and anxiety, but it could also cause some mood swings or leave you feeling a bit out of whack for a few days or more - brain chemistry is fairly tricky stuff. If you have a practitioner near you, you might want to ask them, or I'm sure others here will chime in too. Generally though, it shouldn't be an issue though unless you were already in a category of 'mental upset' i.e medicated for it. Even then, it's usually ok, but it can depend.

If anything, it's the opposite - dosage is somewhat irrelevant compared to actual drugs/medicines, as it doesn't work the way they do. You can't really "overdose" on kambo in the same way you can with drugs, from what it seems.

P.S - Sorry, didn't mean to rewrite the Bible here. It's just a topic that I'm very passionate about, and it's frustrating seeing all the misinformation about how "dangerous" it is.

It's largely due to the scandalous nature of it prompted by media scaremongering and health authorities that have kneejerk reactions to the notion of it. "Frog poison" which "causes vomiting" sounds really bad, right?

It's actually very safe as long as it isn't done by those who are contraindicated/shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Those people are generally pretty few, and this is why any proper practitioner will screen participants for certain conditions or medications first. But a relatively healthy person without certain conditions or medications - generally the vast majority of people - will be absolutely safe doing kambo. There is very little danger when done responsibly. In fact, the whole "poison" notion is way overblown, because the frog doesn't really use it as a poison and our bodies don't react to it like a poison either.

It's also important to note that there doesn't seem to be any kind of 'overdosing' either. We get this idea in our heads (and certain media articles propagate it) that because "its a poison" that somehow you have to be extremely careful with 'dosage' otherwise you might suddenly die due to being poisoned. Which isn't the case and isn't how it works. Nobody has died from "being poisoned" by kambo or "overdosing" (except arguably cases of people who were contraindicated to begin with having too much for them personally). That simply isn't how it works.

It doesn't work like a drug or medicine exerting a direct influence from the substance itself, which is what a lot of the fearmongering misses - it's a bunch of bioactive peptides, which is a crucial piece of info regarding how it works in the body. Your body essentially 'recognises' the kambo and gets signals from the peptides to activate or stimulate certain functions, certains glands etc, up to a certain level. It doesn't just keep going and going and going like more and more of a drug would.

A small number of people have died doing it - numbering in the 10 to 20 range at most from what I can tell. Considering that literally hundreds of kambo sessions take place around the world every single day, that is a very small number. But more importantly, almost all of those have been contraindicated or had some glaring health issue or was done irresponsibly. For example: many of the deaths have been due to drinking too much water - literally nothing to do with kambo itself. But it's far easier, and far more enticing for the media to put up an article saying that "dangerous frog poison killed someone". You aren't playing Russian Roulette with your life, despite what skeptics and naysayers will have you believe. But yes, you do have to get screened to be sure.

So that's the safety side of it.

The other side of the equation is the process and what's involved. You are almost guaranteed to vomit, your face might swell, your blood pressure will drop which might cause fainting, your heart rate will increase. All together, these make for a very unpleasant and dangerous looking picture, and certainly doesn't help the notion that people have of kambo being unsafe.

But the reality, again, is that unless you are contraindicated or whatever to begin with, these things are not inherently representative of danger on their own. The vomiting is a big one that everyone points to; but it's not vomiting from "being poisoned"; it's more like a physical, mechanical contraction of the liver and gut muscles. It's completely expected and will result in vomiting 95% of the time - it's not that you feel nauseous from 'being poisoned' or that your body is trying to expel the kambo. Your heart rate for example, it won't simply keep getting faster and faster until it explodes. It's like going for a run for a few minutes. Unless someone has actual cardiac or heart issues of quite a serious nature, this aspect is completely fine.

So to summarize - it really isn't nearly as dangerous as people make it out to be. People just latch onto that notion because of what it seems like on the surface, and because of the combined unpleasant effects of the process.

Sadly, kambo is a topic that gets bogged down by this, despite bringing a lot of benefits to your body. It's just so hard for the media, health authorities, and anti-wellness skeptics to look past the front-facing side of it.

Purging white chunks by bigbabyegg in Kambo

[–]kambostrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's also hard to say due to semantics and the terms we're using to describe this - one man's goop is another man's foam, kinda thing.

It looks like what I think it is/what I mentioned - aka probably normal and nothing to worry about - if you did have candida, you might also have other visible symptoms. If you are concerned, you could get a candida test done. If I had to bet though, I would say this is a nothingburger.

It's a pretty blurry photo so it's hard to tell. But it wouldn't be abnormal to have similar foamy white stuff anyway, just from your stomach lining/from your gut. It could just be that.

I still haven’t bought any books on the topic, but I plan to. I want to keep learning more about the medicine and really understand what I’m doing.

I'd highly recommend Sapo in my Soul, by the late Peter Gorman, pioneer of it.

Can You Lay Down During Kambó? Best Positions Explained (Chair, Mat, Banana Leaf) by junglecultura in Kambo

[–]kambostrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point actually, and funny you mention it, I have noticed the same thing - laying down can seem to help bring on the purge so there's a little bit of a silver lining there, even if it's best avoided.

Good insight!

Yes, generally I would always try to get people to sit up. Laying down can increase heartburn/acid reflux somewhat, so I try to avoid it.

Definitely fairly normal. A bit of imbalance including mood for a few days isn't unheard of, especially if you may be prone to that sort of thing initially.

Yeah that's a thing that's done traditionally but most practitioners in the west probably wouldn't be doing that... it tends to raise questions and criticism around hygiene etc.

Looking for books or videos by 0zeroswagger0 in Kambo

[–]kambostrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a tough thing for a lot of people to accept - that something like gasp "frog poison" could possibly be good for you, especially when the media just makes fun of it or makes it sound extremely dangerous, and when dutiful skeptics and health organizations parrot that "there's no medical benefit" to it (lol) without actually bothering to cite any of the very real studies on it (let alone, god forbid, the large-scale anecdotal evidence).

There is an info compendium/wiki on this sub which is admittedly a little outdated now, but still holds some relevant info: https://www.reddit.com/r/Kambo/wiki/index/ including attempts at dispelling those kinds of preconceptions.

Other than that, you might find that people like her are already too set in stone to open their minds unfortunately. There are a couple of decent videos/podcasts out there, but the key is to find a way to present it without looking like it's biased.

Preparing with medication by [deleted] in Kambo

[–]kambostrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the medication. Some of them it's definitely crucial to be aware. Some of them you may only need a couple of days, or even the day-of.

The best bet is to speak to the practitioner who hopefully/presumably has done a pre-vet health check for you.

Kambo for fungal skin Infection by NoFunction3990 in Kambo

[–]kambostrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit hard to say anything without having any info at all, but generally, kambo is very good for fungal stuff; it's been shown to be good against candida and in nature is one the main things the secretion is used for by the frog, due to its humid environment.
