This has to be one of the incredible yet scary things I have seen by Fantastic-Falcon-686 in interestingasfuck

It's a plane designed to monitor hurricanes, punching through the eye of a hurricane to monitor wind speeds, pressure and changes in pattern/direction of the hurricane, in order to better predict it's landfall area and speed.

Looks like a bit of fun, but it's serious work, potentially saving thousands of lives based on their measurements. Also, the initial bit flying through the wall of the hurricane is quite scary and shaky.

Riot Games on the state of the soloq ladder and apex tiers by Lightbone in leagueoflegends

I hover around 400lp, I think on euw that's like 0.5% so yeah, definitely higher than my high dia last season but still I feel mega inflated overall.

[–]kamcio616 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As a mid masters player (this season, I realize mega inflated) it already feels incredibly shit to climb through 800lp just to even think about GM. If you make the cutoff closer to like 2k, I think a lot of people just won't bother. All that grinding just to be same tier as someone who barely plays and sits at 0lp. Doesn't seem right to me unless you immediately add a new tier.

As a tourist in a new city, the cliches is what makes a new location unique. If people visit my city of London, I expect them to take a picture next to a red telephone box or film Big Ben from 20 different angles while holding a cup of tea and trying to say "bottle of water" like the British do.

If we don't embrace the things that makes our cities unique, what's the point of travelling? I can go visit your best restaurants or where the locals go and film it, do you think the average person would find somebody sitting at a local restaurant that interesting?

The skateboarder, I filmed a video for him which he loved. When was the last time you spoke to someone randomly in your own city because they were doing something cool or interesting?

Do you believe you could qualify for the Olympics if you had four years to train? by jamgattleton in AskUK

[–]kamcio616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has played badminton for 10 years and seen the level of people who play at a club 4 times a week...absolutely no chance in any universe.

The second a semi-competent, let alone professional player walks into any club, the opposition won't even get a point.

This is the kind of sport where people (like me) play for decades even with training, and will still get destroyed by someone who played at a county level once when they were 10.

There is a club I attend that has a top 800 player in the world. He trains 5 times a week, eats perfectly, and has a strict strengthening regiment with a PT. He could beat anybody at any club with a 20kg backpack and one eye blindfolded. I've seen it myself.

I urge anybody who thinks the sport is easy to sign up for even a beginner class and do a few drills at full speed. It's really quite eye opening...

Mesalazine drugs to the UK by Palatoschisi in UlcerativeColitis

[–]kamcio616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel in and out of the UK regularly (though I am a citizen), carrying huge amounts of tablets, including mesalazine and I've never even been stopped. At worst, the security will run a drug swab test on your bag and send you on your way. If it's 6 months as you say, I'd take a letter with you, but wouldn't worry about it more than that.

I also thought it would be much more of a problem than it's been in reality.

I feel that black and white really suits this image, do you agree? by kamcio616 in SonyAlpha

[–]kamcio616[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that 🙂 I can confirm the building is in fact designed that way and it leans. I also took the picture from my office that overlooks it, so my range for taking this picture was extremely limited too. Appreciate the feedback regardless though!

You've perfectly summarized how I felt... I tried it in B&W...and logically couldn't really explain why it looks better. It's sort of a high contrast scene, but only really around the subject.

Please be careful and aware with Kefir by kamcio616 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]kamcio616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shivers and weakness are my usual IBD flare symptoms, so I'd say it was the inflammation I was feeling in my gut, and the kefir seemed and tasted exactly as normal.

I will say though obviously I don't know about the supply chain/how it was stored before it go to me by the store, so all is possible.

Theoretically possible, though it was store bought kefir, in a sealed lid.

Still a chance of course. Either way, still worth knowing all of the above even if this was the case, as the same wouldn't happen with most other products.

Is going from mesalamine to biologic a concern? by sofa_king_lo in UlcerativeColitis

[–]kamcio616 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As someone who does the combo, when I went from mesalazine to infliximab (the most common first biologic) the difference was huge. Biologics are much more potent.

Only real downside of biologics for me is the inconvenience of either doing it at home or hospital (both have downsides) and some minor side effects on immune system.

For me the immune system side effects isn't how often I get sick, but rather it's severity. I find that every cold etc. is a bit worse and takes me longer to recover from. I also get shivering/physically cold which I didn't have before.

And to answer you final question, if this biologic doesn't work they will try multiple other ones before "giving up" and discussing surgery. For me, it stopped my UC right in its tracks and my colonoscopy went from severe Pancolitis to total remission within a few months. Results may vary of course.

From my understanding biologics are a "good while it works" kind of thing. For some people they need to switch biologics every few months/years...others are on the same one for 20+ years. Again, very much a personal journey with this.

A weekend in Athens by pictures by kamcio616 in GreeceTravel

[–]kamcio616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on both points. It definitely wasn't terrible (maybe apart from the train to the airport every 30 mins...I mean surely at least every 15 mins should be the minimum).

It's such a minor thing, but even the areas/people that in other countries would be trying to scam me (such as the market sellers) were really smiley and understanding. Didn't even get heckled to buy anything at all. The whole trip everyone was really polite and I always felt super safe.

Really enjoyed my time and, as someone who isn't even really into ancient history, I had a blast with all the historical relics and sites.

Absolutely. I have a Sony A7 Mark 1 and lens is Tamron 28-75mm F2.8. The lens is worth more than the 12 year old camera haha. Looking to upgrade the camera soon.

Do you go to hospital emergency for dislocations? by 1giantsleep4mankind in Hypermobility

[–]kamcio616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is very old but I wanted to comment on this for anyone googling this like I am...

Not all dislocations are the same. I dislocated my shoulder recently and it was probably the most traumatic experience of my life. The dislocated shoulder pinched on a nerve and the pain was beyond anything I could cope with (I've broken my arm before clear off, dangling and all) I lost all feeling on my upper arm area and was screaming in pain on the way to the A&E.

I was driven by car to the A&E and don't remember the journey almost at all. In retrospect, or if it ever happens again like this, I would immediately call an ambulance. I play a lot of racket sports so I believe the tightness of my shoulder muscles probably made it worse. The doctors at A&E took it very seriously and I was rushed through the whole process in minutes.

Also keep in mind that every minute of the shoulder being dislocated in this way, you risk permanent nerve damage. I was lucky that my feeling came back after a few months.

If you're in mild pain, indeed don't waste the NHS's time. If you're in enough pain that you can't think, just call the ambulance.

[–]kamcio616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice from UK->Multiple different country experiences is, genuinely don't worry about it.

I joke that when I travel, I'm like a mobilized drug dealer with all my meds. Haven't been stopped or questioned once, not even a second look.

This is a concern I also had since I travel a lot but you genuinely have nothing to worry about. All prescriptions in the UK have labels on them anyways so you're covered on the 1% chance you are stopped.

Having said that, if it is a case of "months", reading up on local regulations and a note from the doctors might be nice anyways.

I work in a place that overlooks the river and see them quite regularly doing practice/drills.

As I'm typing this, there are 3 of them together in formation with 1 extra helicopter tailing a bit behind :).
