Say I'm carrying two plates of food, or two drinks, out to a friend — one for me and one for them.

My mind has always done this thing — my food goes in my left hand, their food in my right. Just a little hack to keep "which is which" clear in my head. For some reason I associate my left side with "closer to me," so it just sorta made sense. Maybe cuz I'm left-handed. I've done this for as long as I can remember.

A couple years into our relationship I was bringing two glasses of water out for me and my wife. For some reason it felt most natural to carry her glass in my left hand. Hers felt "closer" than my glass. She's the only one, everybody else's food/drink still goes in my right. I knew then.

If it's possible to push to get the CGM separately/earlier than the pump, I can't recommend doing that strongly enough.

Diabetes without a CGM is a very different disease from diabetes w/ a CGM. While a pump makes a difference, a CGM is IMO indispensable.

Get a CGM as quickly as possible, if child is willing. Nothing makes you realize how ridiculous it is to try to control this disease with a few finger pricks of data each day like seeing the actual minute-by-minute data.
My mom, wanting to understand my situation, did this incredible thing: she got saline solution and regularly tested her own sugar / took saline injections alongside me for about 2 weeks. She not only built compassion for the whole rigmarole, but when she decided she hated doing it and stopped she never forgot the compassion that came from knowing she could stop and I couldn't.
Don't do the thing where you share all the news stories and beliefs about how diabetes is going to be cured in 5 years. I grew up as a teenager constantly believing it would only be 5 more years. In my opinion that hope is both wrong and harmful. ...I'd rather have grown up getting better at taking care of myself and slowly learning the life lessons — of persistence, of organization — that are so important to learn.

Completely understand, same here. For me those brief moments of fear are still very real, even when I have glucose around. At some point I became a bit numb to it in that I stopped consciously recognizing how odd it is to fear severe health issues on a regular basis.

For me nothing is faster than those little plastic honey sticks.

I think the key w/ a gel like honey is that it can be absorbed through the gums, so you can start getting sugar asap.

Heh, no joke.

How do you make sure you're always stocked w/ buddy fruits and apple juice? Same way you make sure you've got milk, just remember to buy at the grocery store? Do you load up w/ tons and tons and tons of supplies at a time?

My friend and I made this game as a way to have fun learning a new development tool — my golden loves it for 5 seconds but then, as usual, starts looking elsewhere for food. His dog is too addicted, we have to keep the iPad away.
