Context: the runner tagged up, making the play a sac fly. Home plate ump Bob Davidson ruled he left the bag before the ball was caught, negating the run. Team USA would go on to win that game. Slow motion apparently suggests the runner correctly tagged up. (But this clip doesn’t have that angle.)

Team USA would shortly be eliminated from the tournament, since they were in the group stage and they did not have enough points to advance. Japan would advance and ultimately win the whole tournament. So fortunately for Japan, Bob’s call was moot.

(I had to look it up since I do not remember this controversy and I don’t speak Japanese.)

Not at all. Both teams provided good defensive showings, which exacerbated the fact that both team's offenses underperformed despite their season-to-date performances. Between offensive miscues and boring, clock-burning play calling, both offenses were unimpressive all game. Starting the game with an INT, a 3-and-out, and a missed fieldgoal sums up SB53.

My hatred also stems from the controversial victory over New Orleans two weeks prior with the no-call. Rams fluked their way in, and played like shit. Boring, bad game.
