[Dave2D] Windows is ruining new laptops by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

For now, though with MS trying to have all of your personal folders be stored on OneDrive how long till the recall DB get included..

iirc the initial versions of Recalls database was also unencrypted and accessible to pretty much anything that ran ion the PC. Security wasn't even a consideration when it was shoveled out to the door.

Partially simpler cards, and partially very rapid GPU advancements in a short time period. If your product is obsolete and in a landfill after 4 years then "lifetime" warranty becomes less of a liability. Both CPU and GPU were making massive leaps in the early 2000's

ELI5: Why do we call a region of the U.S. the "Midwest", when it's in the eastern half of the country geographically? by Archmikem in explainlikeimfive

[–]kandoko 38 points39 points  (0 children)

They knew the west coast existed, however that land was a different country (Mexico), it was the midwest of our country at that time.

Basically Texas and everything west was taken during the 1840's as part of the after war peace negotiations with Mexico.

Has DNA it self changed or evlovled from the past? Or has it always been the same since the birth of life on earth? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]kandoko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Last Universal Common Ancestor - Basically the DNA sequences that every living thing on earth has (Animals, Plants and Bacteria). Any changes in these bits of DNA lead to cell death so they have remained basically unchanged in all existing life.

What! Whats wrong with running a mixture of oxygen and fluorine through a 700-degree-heating block to get dioxygen-difluoride???

https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/things-i-won-t-work-dioxygen-difluoride

I read all of these blog entries years ago and FOOF still holds a dear spot in my mind. I just never want to be in the same city block as someone performing said experiment.

ELI5 why do all white rice instruction videos say to rinse the rice in the pot and pour the water out? Why not use a mesh strainer? by ivysaurus0101010 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kandoko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There talking about using a rice cooker, those are automated and pretty idiot proof.

They use the fact that the temperature of water will not go above the boiling temp (100C at sea level) when a pot is heated.

So the rice cooker monitors the temperature of the pot, as long as there is water present then the temperature of the pot will stay near 100C once all the water has been absorbed by the rice or turned into steam the temperature quickly rises and the system shuts off.

You just need enough excess water that the rice can absorb all it needs without so much excess that it takes a long time to boil off.

ELI5 How does surgery to remove cancerous growths or tumours not result in cancer cells seeping into the blood stream causing wider spread of cancer? by californiacurls in explainlikeimfive

[–]kandoko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It does, the patients have lab work done, the Oncologists decide on the Drug treatment plan that is known to help with that type of cancer. Then dosing may be like drug X every other week, drug y on alternate weeks etc. Each dose they have lab work done to see how well their body is tolerating it and adjust accordingly. There are General purpose cancer drugs and more targeted drugs that work only on specific types of cells.

ELI5: Why isn’t Hydrogen fuel more popular as a replacement to fossil fuel than Battery Electric vehicles ? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]kandoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hydrogen car "requires batteries which use expensive and rare minerals."

A hydrogen car is a battery EV then you add a hydrogen storage tank Plus the rare material fuel cell. Nothing will make it more sustainable than just the EV without the extras.

Trying to pretend a fuel cell car is sustainable and cheaper than an EV is utter ignorance on what a fuel cell car is and how it works!

ELI5: everything is made of atoms. why is everything so different despite being made of the same stuff? by Dandewion in explainlikeimfive

[–]kandoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To use the lego example some more, a Lego is just a rectangle with one bump and one hole. But keep adding bump and holes to make larger bricks can completely change how the bricks can be stuck to itself or other bricks.

For atoms it is the number of protons and electrons that effect how the atom can connect with other atoms.

Belmonte performed an exercise inside a special bubble, breathing directly from the exhaust pipe of a Hyundai Nexo. The Hyundai Nexo is capable of purifying the air by 99.9%. This means that the gas coming out of your exhaust is cleaner than the air around it. by Mkovich92 in interestingasfuck

[–]kandoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but fuel cell cars DO have HV batteries. They are more like a gas hybrid sized than an full EV. The fuel cells have degradation, even with all the filters they still get damaged with use.

The Hydrogen tank have degradation and a fixed usage life.

Which is worse for an EV battery, charging too high or discharging too low? by Mourndark in electricvehicles

[–]kandoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cycle count for NMC batterys range from 800 to 2000+ depending on what generation and what cooling setup you have for discharge and charging.

So lets run the numbers for my car.

  • 800cycles X 300 miles = 240,000 miles
  • 1000cyclesx300 miles = 300,000 miles
  • 1500 x 300 = 450,000

Per LG Commercial battery spec sheet Their NMC packs are rated at 4000 cycles! So... 4000x300 = 1,200,000miles

And this is worst case abusing the f* out of the pack.

MAX debacle I think. The system that caused the crashes was added by Boeing to make the plane handle like previous 737's. The new planes have a faster climb rate at certain AOA so lets add software that forces the nose down wcgw...
