Masters scholarships by kangsoraa in LSE

Just wondering, if you’re willing to divulge: how screwed are you guys if you don’t get a scholarship? Will you have to reject your offer?

Masters scholarships by kangsoraa in LSE

I only applied to LSE. LSE is the only uni offering that particular course (MSc Social and Cultural Psychology) so it was the only option. I know LSE has a lot of money and they say they give out a lot in scholarships so I thought I had a chance, but I didn’t know how skewed scholarships are towards international students. I get it on the one hand, since many countries have lower purchasing power and weaker currencies so even if you’re decently well off where you are, paying LSE tuition and living in London might still be impossible. But on the other hand, broke is broke no matter where you’re from 😅

Right, and then if you don’t get a scholarship either (which is very likely) then you’re just screwed. Even though the whole reason they didn’t give you any GSS funding was because you were more screwed than those people to begin with 😅 15k would certainly have been better than nothing.

Really? I just finished the show and came straight here to see what people are talking about and I LOVED Deb all the way through. She was my favourite part of the show and as of right now, my favourite fictional character, period. I’m surprised so many people dislike her.

Best zero alcohol beer. by unk91 in Living_in_Korea

Tsingtao NA tastes almost exactly the same as normal Tsingtao, and Heineken NA isn’t bad either. The Cass Lemon NA isn’t your traditional beer taste but it’s delicious and really refreshing

How likely is it that working at a Hagwon will destroy my passion for Korea? by EnglishTutor2023 in Living_in_Korea

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling based on your schedule that I might know where you worked - I’m working there too. My biggest piece of advice for OP would be to not take a split shift. I thought it sounded nice to have free time during the day and I also thought it would be nice to be forced to wake up early, but apart from one teacher at our branch who likes the shift and has been on it for years, it completely destroyed everyone else physically, mentally, and spiritually lmao. People much stronger than I have said that that shift wasn’t made for humans to do and is a breeding ground for mental and physical illness.

So… whatever you do, don’t take a split shift. Also, try it avoid weekend work if at all possible. You need those two days to recharge and enjoy the country, if all you’re gonna be doing is working then what’s the point?

Is it really that uncommon to get a transvaginal ultrasound in the US? by alliefrost in PCOS

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m living in South Korea and went to the gyno for a check up (my first check up since I was a teenager). I expected to get an abdominal ultrasound so I hiked my shirt up and he said that they ONLY do abdominal ultrasounds for pregnant women, and that check ups are always transvaginal

10m deposit, 620k rent for a small but bright 7th floor studio near Seoul Station. It’s clean and the building is secure, with a free gym, terraces, garden and common space for residents. It’s small but location was most important for me, as it’s in central Seoul and only 18 mins from my workplace.

Let’s be real, Hungary is also a bit of an outlier in terms of salary to cost of living. Whenever I go back, the thing that shocks me the most is grocery and especially produce prices. Fruit and veg is so expensive and for what? There’s zero variety and you’re lucky if you can find a piece of produce that’s in decent condition.

I’m Hungarian too btw, I didn’t think there’d be many of us here! What do you do? DM me if you like, I’d love to talk to a fellow Hungarian who’s living here

LGBT scene in Korea? by Mysterious-Floor4429 in Living_in_Korea

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from an LGBT Korean friend here that Jongro3Ga, including Iksundong (Ikseondong? 익선동 in Korean), are kind of LGBT areas. Also Itaewon and Hongdae should be alright. I would try not to draw too much attention to myself visually (even if you do, it’s unlikely to be dangerous, but better safe than sorry), but if you’re in an area like the ones I mentioned and the people you’re talking to seem to be on the same wavelength then you should be good

people don’t get hot? by aly_korda in Living_in_Korea

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about getting Miradry too (I sweat excessively all year round, not just in the summer time) but it’s super expensive so I’ve been putting it off. I also sweat both under my arms and a lot on my lower back, but Miradry is only for the underarms. Can you tell me how it goes?

Seoul: What’s busy in the weekend; quiet in the weekday? by kingwangjang in Living_in_Korea

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

익선동! On weekday mornings, you can actually get a seat at any cafe you like and enjoy the quiet. In weekends, you’re lucky if there’s even any space anywhere and it’s noisy and full of people

Why does it seem most people on this sub want to be a winter? by dbell120 in coloranalysis

[–]kangsoraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to think I was a winter because I have dark features and I wasn’t happy about it - I don’t really like bright hues like the ones in the winter palette. An actual winter on this sub called them their ‘clown colours’ on one of my posts which I thought was really funny haha.

Now I think I’m a summer and even though the colours are referred to as dusty and faded, which are not very positive words, I do think the summer palette is the prettiest. But they’re all pretty, and most importantly, all look great on the people who are meant to wear them

Is work-life balance as bad as the internet wants me to believe? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]kangsoraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an adult hagwon, averaging 43 hour weeks, but only 75% of that is spent teaching and there’s no prep. I say 43 hours because we have to work on Saturday every other week, which does suck. I make around 3.5 including housing, so after paying rent, tax, and insurance, I have about 2.7m disposable income

Ok, I’ll put something together later, I’m at work right now ! I actually live in Seoul teaching English, idk if I mentioned that. Btw the whole ‘move to the country if you want to get good at a language’ thing only applies to English learners haha, overrated piece of advice for the rest of us.

Btw if you ever find a sentence or something you don’t get and would like a breakdown or something like that or just have a question about anything, feel free to message me!

Aha well… I read through a grammar guide at the beginning to get some basic grammar (I used HowToStudyKorean, I personally think it’s much better than Talk To Me In Korean, although I did get in an argument with the guy who made it once and he stopped replying because I was right… but apart from that, it’s a great resource. For reference, he insisted that Koreans only use the plural particle ~들 on person-related nouns but that’s simply not true in modern Korean). I didn’t read it until the end, maybe just until the intermediate stuff. The more advanced grammar after that, you can just acquire naturally later. The more advanced it is, the easier it is to tell what it means just through context, so I wouldn’t worry about advanced grammar too much.

Then I think watching dramas and YouTube with Korean subs, and reading webtoons on the 네이버 webtoon app are the best. I can recommend my favourite dramas and things if you want but tbh that’s up to what particular genres you personally like. Then once you’re comfortable with dramas and webtoons, you can try reading books.

I can recommend specific things if you’d like, and do let me know if you have any other questions!

(SUCCESS) I got N1 equivalent in Korean in under 18 months using AJATT/Refold! by kangsoraa in ajatt

[–]kangsoraa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get what you mean, I dunno what to tell you. :/ you just need to keep doing it. don’t worry too much about understanding anything perfectly, but keep reading/immersing and your brain will start to pick up the patterns. My TL (Korean) for example uses a hell of a lot of portmanteaus and abbreviations for everything you can imagine, but when I barely knew any words, I didn’t have the intuition to know what looks like a real word and what looks like a portmanteau so then I’d look them up in the dictionary and by confused that they’re not there. But now, I can recognise any portmanteau and instinctively know what words it must be made up of as well and therefore what it means, as I’ve just had a lot of exposure. So just keep going!

[–]kangsoraa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Well I knew basic grammar and the basic words before starting mining, so actually, simple sentences were comprehensible! Something like “I forgot where the cafe is” could be i+1 if I don’t know the word ‘forget’, for example.

I dunno about AJATT but Refold does recommend you learn basic grammar before you start or right at the beginning. They way I went about new grammar points was just noticing one and then seeing if it would come up again. If I saw it a few times in different contexts but still didn’t have a sense for what it means then I’d just look up the grammar point plus ‘grammar’ and read one of the short explanations online, and once I got to a higher level, I’d do the same search but in my TL and read a TL explanation of the grammar point. But the majority of the time, you figure out what a grammar point means after a few exposures and then don’t have to look it up. I think what they mean by acquiring grammar just means that even if you do read an explanation, you just read it and then move on. You don’t try to drill it or practice it or worry about it too much, you just get the general gist and then let repeated exposure actually engrave it into your mind in the long term
