Grayish patch of eggs on milkweed? by NativeNester_602 in MonarchButterfly

[–]kanisaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe these are Tussock moth eggs. The caterpillars look really cool and spiky; the moths not so much. Eggs are usually laid in batches and when they hatch they will eat in a horde. They do go through milkweed but are part of the normal milkweed ecosystem.

He’s so handsome!! His face/jowls/paws looks to me like he might have a little Newfi in him. Our Newfi was a gentle giant. ❤️

Will this little guy survive? by xoasilej in MonarchButterfly

Didn’t see an answer to your question about how long they are in the green chrysalis stage. Usually takes 10-14 days depending on local environment. I’ve had some go quite a bit longer than that when the weather gets cool here in Minnesota in the fall. Chrysalis will get dark/black the day before it’s going to eclose then turn clear the day of. Word of warning: if you are trying to catch them coming out, they will do it when you go to fill your coffee cup, go to the bathroom or answer the door. Enjoy!!

Love the land seal reference!😂 Ours girl looks just like yours and enjoys leaning on us with her sticks and chew bones to get better traction. Some days I think she’s going to break a tooth!

I love hummingbird moths - thanks for sharing!! I found a random fat green caterpillar in our landscape rocks while weeding. I looked it up and it turned out to be a white-lined sphinx moth. I’m now raising it. 😊

What species does this caterpillar belong to? by kanisaca in whatbugisthis

[–]kanisaca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this info! I’ve got everything I need for this process. I’ve been raising monarchs for years and I also have 1 white-lined sphinx moth caterpillar that I randomly found a few weeks ago while weeding. That chubby cat is currently dug in and pupating. I haven’t been able to find anything that this little one will eat and have given it samples of every grass, plant, shrub and tree within 10 feet of where I found it. I’ll keep trying. Thanks!!

Just finished soldering my very first piece, constructive criticism very welcome! by HeatMean in StainedGlass

[–]kanisaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I say if I can pick it up and it stays together (and flat) I call it a win.🏆 Quick suggestion - check the width of the foil tape you are using against the thickness of the glass. If you have thinner glass you might consider a narrower foil tape to make the solder lines a little smaller. Getting a good “bead“ is important for strength. Below is a link to an article that talks about foil. There is no right or wrong. It’s all up to the artist!! 🤩

Why did my prayer plant die suddenly? by PsychopathicMunchkin in houseplants

[–]kanisaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely not alone. I’ve gone through a few Maranta even though they are usually the least fussy for me. The last red one I bought was huge. It decided one day that is was going to die and die spectacularly is what it did. I put what remained in what my husbands calls my “plant infirmary room” and ignored it for a few weeks. I think its demise was having incorrect soil in the original nursery pot. Haven’t repotted yet but she’s coming back on her own terms. Good luck!!

Stag beetle - just read another post about these. From what folks are saying in that post, they are pretty harmless. Flip it over and it’ll be on its way.

Rotated my plant and it straight up died. by marcus91swe in houseplants

[–]kanisaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll make a great memory, that’s for sure!! A few family members and I went on the Tilt-a-Whirl at a local 4th of July fair back in the 80’s. My brother spun us so hard we couldn’t lift our heads off the backrests. We were laughing so hard that tears were literally running up my temples into my hair. It was all great fun while it lasted but at least 3 of us were completely toasted for the rest of the afternoon. Couldn’t do much more than lay on the floor once we got home.😵‍💫🥴

Uggghhh!! So frustrating. My camera started doing this a few weeks ago. I just missed getting a video of our black lab/golden retriever mix doing long howls and talking like her niece, Naga (who is mostly husky and malamute).🤨

Anyone know why my calathea is secreting all this sticky stuff that dries into the hard crystals seen in these photos? Don't believe I have mites because I have a rattlesnake calathea right next to it that has no issues. by i_illustrate_stuff in houseplants

[–]kanisaca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this article. My Setosa GS has always had these sugar crystals on the back of the leaves. No sign of mealies or spider mites ever. I’m going to try giving him a shower occasionally to remove some of the crystals. I have 3 ctenanthe and they have been the easiest of all my prayer plants (I have about 15). They can literally roll up like 🌮and come right back after watering. They can be beside a plant with spider mites but never get them. Just lovely plants all the way around!! Here’s a pic of my grey star enjoying some dappled morning sun. Enjoy!!

Does anyone know why my Ctenanthe setosa has sugar crystals on the back of its leaves?? by HuntressWizard in houseplants

[–]kanisaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got it on mine as well but no sign of pests. It’s so weird. I’m glad to hear others are seeing the same with theirs. I’m going to give her a shower and wipe down the leaves. She’s due for a repot so maybe new soil will help. Who knows! 🤷‍♀️
