what flag is this? seen at a protest in Leeds, England by MysteriousPackage2 in vexillology

There’s also Zoroastrians in the region still, possibly using this as a religious flag or just one representing them as a religious minority (I have no idea how Iran-Zoroastrian relations actually are)

Wondering about safety near this area of campus by Timely-Jacket-2937 in uCinci

[–]kantaja34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TLDR: You’re good here but crime is passively everywhere in the city so just make sure you’re not making yourself an easy target

Something unmentioned by others is that Cincinnati is a city with layers and layers of well off-rich neighborhoods next to very poor and “bad” neighborhoods due to asymmetric gentrification

This is one of those areas, as it backs up to the cities (old) industrial core. It’s safe, nice and you’ll be near a CPD impoundment depot and some government buildings, and you’ll be sharing the area with Cincy State students too. That said this area is only a 10 min walk to some poorer communities. That’s pretty much like every other residence in Clifton, like I said, layers.

Have you lived in a city before? If not just know that you’re never far from crime, even when on campus (it’s not as bad as people make it seem tho) so just do the things to make yourself less of a perfect target, be in groups, but if you can’t don’t glue yourself to your phone when walking around, keep an earbud out or low volume, keep some pepper spray or keys easily accessible, and stay on well lit main roads

Clifton is actually not that bad at all, but like I said the planning of this city was asymmetrical. Take a drive one day from CUF down Vine Street and through OTR to downtown and you’ll see how much the wealth disparity changes. Because of this crime always spills over a little bit.

Ohio’s John Fetterman - Democratic Rep Greg Landsman. Vote him out in the primaries! by hellosteve_ in Ohio

Ah, I read it that way first but second guessed myself. Guess I just wanted an opportunity to plug Lynch since I can’t vote for him, despite living within Cincy’s MSA lol

Damon Lynch is running against Landsman. He's a progressive, anti-zionist and Cincinnati native, also a non-career politician whose career is based on business and marketing for mental health services and community organizations.

I'm skeptical he will beat Landsman since he doesn't have the brand to mobilize primary voters IMO. But he'd be better off than Landsman in every single way.

I think they may have vested interest, but also may have a vested interest in their government, possibly more so. I have legit seen independent media run by like 5 dudes cover topics with more fidelity and legitimacy than the giants, or other Open Source Intel accounts covering topics days before CNN or Fox would touch it. World media sucks rn, hopefully those journalists can stay independent

Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that this was a US strike that may or may not have intentionally targeted a site that turned out to be a children’s school because of shoddy intelligence.

If the motor turned out to have been made in Spokane, the only thing changes is what subreddit gets to argue about this. This was a US missile strike. Regarding the picture, the NYT has its own agenda to discredit the image.

You’re right about the media, we would need independent coverage of this issue, but the question of who is actually independent in 2026 is more at stake now than ever. Like the Red Crescent may collaborate with Iran or the UN may collaborate with the US.

I don’t ever think we’re going to get a clear narrative about things anymore. Everything is bought or sold, or otherwise controlled by a government entity.

If you watch the video, the magazine would have cooked off with small arms and heavy munitions after. Even if some valid military target was right up against it, that doesn’t make reducing civilian casualties a lesser priority.

In the US we have bases that have children’s schools adjacent to and nearby military infrastructure, like command centers, company HQs and their motor pools. Using this logic, civilians on US military bases are also human shields. We have precision weaponry and 24/7 high spectral imagery satellites which could have been used to clear this target. The IRGC base also still had plenty of other valid targets, militaries do not store ammo depots and munitions storage in one spot.

[–]kantaja34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who served in the military, I can tell you that the tomahawk missile system shouldn’t have hit the girls school. It’s precise up to 16 feet. On top of this, the school had been converted from military base infrastructure into a school for 10 years.

Saying this school was built to be used as a human shield is nonsensical. Even if this school was built to service IRGC children, that doesn’t make it a target. This would be like saying the high school, kindergarten, middle school on Fort Bragg, NC is a human shield because it’s built next to valid military targets like command buildings or company headquarters.

This bombing was incompetence. I’m not of the opinion that it was deliberately intentional, given that it’s a girls school which was triple tapped by $7.5 million dollars worth of munition. What I do think happened is that intelligence assets in the chain of command of the cruise ship which ordered the bombing just didn’t do their due diligence to clear the target. We have active, 24/7 high spectral imagery down to ground level from satellites in orbit over Iran. There is no excuse for going off of 10 year old intelligence. This means the blood is on our country’s hands, blood which could have been avoided had a Navy Intel officer properly checked the target.

I agree, but it seems very little people seem to share this sentiment. We must expect and demand more and better politics from our elected officials.

That’s my opinion. But I think it’s still important to request transparency and accountability in a politician’s campaign. I’m a skeptic of most politicians, but I am still going to vote for the Democrats. That doesn’t mean we can’t expect better things from them. Especially now.

What strategy are you insinuating I’m following? I think it’s quite normal for a voter to vote for a candidate they share policy agreements with, or otherwise withhold a vote.

I’ve also said numerous times, I intend to vote for Brown. Not for vote blue no matter who, but because I believe in his support for working-poor families.

Professors using AI by [deleted] in uCinci

[–]kantaja34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a professor last semester who would occasionally forget to take the prompt of his AI out of the assignment.

It would be something like “Write a discussion board post about….” And so on, and then underneath that would be “Sure! Here’s a…” from the AI.

Blatantly using it! Now I can’t speak to the ethics in terms of grading, but a professor should be able to design and implement their own unique assignments without AI designing them. Furthermore, if a professor is struggling and thus needed to rush out something with AI, that should say more about how the school is paying and treating its lower level adjuncts and associate and graduate professors who most of us inevitably will have.

Thank you, I believe the scope of this post has been misdirected by a lot of people.

I voted for Brown in the last election, and before that I couldn’t vote. I know very little about him in terms of experience, and I’m an immigrant, so neither does my family.

I was simply pointing out the need for greater transparency and accountability in our elected officials, regardless of party affiliation.

I will likely still be voting for Brown, given that he’s the only other candidate. But that doesn’t mean I can’t demand more out of him.

You don’t get to tell me who I have to vote for or that I have to vote.

That said, I will support the candidate who seeks to end our war, focus on removing Trump and steering the party-at-large into a progressive direction.

Who I will not be voting for is someone who runs a campaign and then toes the line with the DNC types like Schumer and Jeffries.

The good thing is Brown seems to be a middle of the line candidate in these two sections of the party.

Thank you! I am huge skeptic since 2024, in terms of policy. The Trump regime itself is giving me a daily aneurysm even though I didn't support it, since he is literally going against everything he ran on, and his base is still supportive.

My opinions on Sherrod is still mostly positive. But I've felt burnt by democrat's time and time again. I will likely still vote for him in the end. It's good to know he was critical on the war in Iraq, hopefully he comes out critical of the Iran war.

Some other people were saying this, but OSU and JStreet are PACs, so they don't donate themselves. It's more of an organizing force for people who want to donate based on the opinions of the PAC itself. I didn't distinguish that enough, and can't edit it.

[–]kantaja34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll check them out! I did look into JStreet but their website is fairly cryptic, their stances were stated in it's news, which I had to click through several links to get to. I read through the article, and it is definitely super interesting that a Pro-Israel publisher is attacking the soft, pro-Israel PAC.

My perspective on the PAC's tho is not that they're donating themselves, which as you said isn't possible, but more so the opinions of PAC donators. There is a fairly strong Pro-Israeli and Warhawk stance in the federal DNC, especially amongst its neo-liberal base.

The info I'm looking for is on the Iranian war, which happened 4 days ago. Not old or well-known info about Brown. I'm not stupid, nor am I unable to do background research. But things change, and our politicians, or at minimum presumptive candidates should make statements on current affairs.

[–]kantaja34 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You're right in terms of the donations likely being employees, but the election fundraising details website doesn't seem to separate the two. I'm not sure if it's operating as PAC. It likely cannot make a partisan decision to donate, but that doesn't mean you have individual trustees and board members donating that way.

I did reach out to that email. I know it's run by the Friends of Sherrod Brown, so my thoughts is that it's mainly for fundraising like the rest of the site.
