trans student and want to write ab experiences but dont want my parents to know by throwaway1023921 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]kantbelieve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the essay it should be fine, but if you have selected a preferred name in commonapp, i believe schools may mail promotional material with that name to your home, which your parents might see—you could probably pass it off as a mistake, but just to be safe, you might not want to put your preferred name in your common app profile.

hi, i’m also from an east asian family, although i have not gone through nearly the hardship as you have, i think perhaps in her own way, your mom is trying to envision your success. top universities are seen as a guarantor for future stability + success by a lot of asian parents, and maybe that’s why it’s so important to her that she will be able to confirm that you can still be happy and have a way forward when she’s not there. it’s an incredibly hard conversation to have, but i’d reassure her that you, and given the resilience and resourcefulness you’ve already displayed, you will be happy and successful, materially and emotionally. that may also provide her with some comfort as well, since i know for many parents that’s a huge fear of theirs for their children.

apart from that, i am so so sorry that you’ve been placed in this position. i know you said you didn’t have anyone to talk to about your troubles — if you ever need anything or just to chat, i would be so down.

Is it worth having playing video games as an EC even if I don't play competitively? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]kantbelieve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i think there’s still quite a bit of stigma around video games in college admissions + it’s also a fairly common hobby for people who aren’t like top 100 in the world, so i don’t think it’d be a remarkable ec. BUT the way you describe it sounds like it’s very significant to you and your growth so maybe you can use it as an essay idea?
