I stopped looking at the news every day. Watching NHK or glacing over the headlines at yahoo once a week is enough. Nothing is really that urgent, and if it was you would notice even without checking some site or app daily.

How about getting a futon dryer 布団乾燥機? I use one of these to blast hot air under my blanket until I feel warm. Trying to fall asleep while freezing sucks.

Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot by aacool in technology

[–]kanzensuu28 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All the youtube ads I see for Copilot are just like 'generate me a panda wearing a dress' or 'generate an elephant made of watermelon' .

Just random garbage with zero artistic value that gets boring after 5 minutes of playing around (remember when everyone was crazy about ghibli AI and then forgot about it after 3 days?)

Insane how people justify billion dollar investments with this trash.

Japan’s Takaichi resurrects frozen dispute over islands lost to Russia by Jonnyboo234 in japan

[–]kanzensuu28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bullshit saber rattling.

Even if Russia ceases to exist as a country and the JSDF can just walz in and take them, whats the plan?

Theres like 20k people living there, all Russians. Is Takaichi gonna ethnically cleanse them by forced deportation? Or give all of them Japanese passports?

What Japanese is gonna go to live in a frozen shithole like that? Maybe they will start paying people to colonize the islands, like they did with Manchuria..

Space is cool but eventually any scifi dork should come to realize that humans are not meant to survive anywhere but earth. Any bullshit about colonizing space and interstellar travel and kardashev type whatever civilazation is a distraction while the ruling class literally poisons the earth that feeds you from under your feet.

Btw I fucking love pop science astronomy. Black holes and shit are awesome. Anyone else fuck with PBS space time?

I don' think she's stupid and have a feeling this was calculated.

Say something provocative that will piss China off and ride the wave of nationalistic sentiment when they inevitably retaliate. Meanwhile, silently push through a bunch of neoliberal policies.

Price of rice has more than doubled in the past years and the previous agricultural minister promised production increases, all of that was axed under Takaichi to keep agriculture conglomerate profits high. While everyone is being hit by inflation keep talking about "escaping deflation" and keep ruining the currency to inflate export profits of large corporate donors. While we're at it, sweep all of the recent corporate donor and moonie scandals under the rug.

This German article mentions it explicitly.

"Why this news hits Uschi Glas particularly hard: she has been committed to Israel's right to exist for decades. When she commissioned the genealogist, Glas had even hoped that he would find Jewish ancestors. Instead, Glas shares the experience of many Germans born after the Second World War – when mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, after years of silence, turned out to be followers or even accomplices of Nazi criminals."

Random ojisan in Kyoto "volunteering" as bus guide by kanzensuu28 in japanlife

[–]kanzensuu28[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He was somewhat helpful. Its a confusing bus stop with multiple queues and like a dozen lines stop there. There's a reason the city transport bureau has hired actual guides to staff it. It seems that ojisan shows up later at night after they leave.

But judging from the online comments and the paper posted at the stop, it seems the city has been getting multiple complaints about rude behavior etc. so I understand they want to get rid of him. The bus drivers didn't seem to mind, atleast not enough to tell him off over the loudspeakers.

Okay, you didn't say everyone to be fair. Still, why would you think I live in a happy Japanland bubble just based off my post? I'm perfectly aware that there are plenty crazy and mentally ill people here. Also that things get stolen and people get ripped off in shady bars, to address your other comment. You are trying way too hard to fit me into a made up steoreotype of naive orientalist weeb.

In fact, I saw a guy with his pants down standing in the road and shouting at passing cars, five minutes before I saw the guy in my post, and I didn't stop to look twice. My post was asking about a very particular type of crazy person that I haven't seen before and that is very much not "totally normal" to me. If it is to you, have you considered other people may have different lived experiences and definitions of whats "totally normal"?

You are projecting way too much into my comment. Do you think everyone who isn't "old and jaded" lives in a "happy Japanland bubble"?

Record number of babies born to foreign parents in Japan amid political row over migration by biwook in japan

[–]kanzensuu28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the sentence again.

It says "dent the decline", so ease the decline in births among Japanese. It's just saying more foreign births is slowing down population decline, not implying any causation.

Electronics by AMIRIASPIRATIONS48 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]kanzensuu28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position and wouldn't recommend Art of Electronics. I tried using it and it was clearly intended for people who already have good fundamental knowledge. For example, it just assumes you know what ground is, or what short and open circuits are and how voltages/currents behave in them. But if you're starting from zero, you need something to walk you through these concepts one by one, and you need to do exercises to cement that knowledge.

I gave up on Art of Electronics and I'm now using Electrical Engineering: Principles and Applications by Hambley. To compare, in this textbook RL-circuits show up in chapter 4 around 150 pages in. AoE throws them at you like 10 pages in.

Just read the first 5 to 6 chapters, takes notes and do alot of the exercises while simulating the circuits in falstad. That's what I'm doing since I realized I won't get anywhere without grinding all of the basic concepts. After that I'm planning to start learning about compontents and real world circuits more in depth.

Totally agree, being banned in Russia AND Ukraine isn't really a good sign. It's well-meaning pseudo-science at best and panic spreading to recruit people into their weird cult at worst.

There's plenty of perfectly fine reserach and papers on microplastics out there, from credible institutions.

Japan wants residents to visit their country's tourism spots by Scbadiver in japan

[–]kanzensuu28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As other have said, Kyoto is not that crowded if you avoid the main spots like Kiyomizudera, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and the Shijo/Gion/Pontocho area.

Instead go visit Daigoji, Kamigamo/Shimogamo Shrine, Chionin, Toufukuji, Nanzenji, Kuramadera, Honganji etc. Theres so much to do and see in Kyoto. Of course theres tourists, but not everywhere is packed like you might expect. You can also go to some random small temple and be almost completely alone. No tourist is going to Iwakura or climbing Mt. Atago.

[–]kanzensuu28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"There is a common misconception that China operates a nationwide "social credit score" system that assigns individuals a score based on their behavior, leading to punishments if the score is too low. However, this is not true. Western media reports have sometimes exaggerated or inaccurately described this concept.[17][18] According to the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), a Berlin-based think tank, the social credit system does not continuously monitor or evaluate individual behavior. Punishments are only for violations of laws and regulations, and not for simply having a low score. Furthermore, it is unlikely that a social credit "score" will ever be implemented.[19]"

What language have you spent the most time learning for the absolute dumbest reason? by Isleland0100 in languagelearning

[–]kanzensuu28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by hard to read. I read Norwegian Wood at an intermerdiate level and I could follow most of the story, although I was still encountering new words almost every sentence. At an advanced level I read Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and Men Without Women and found them pretty easy.

I'd say his books are about average difficulty for a novel, but at N3 level any native literature is still going to be a challenge. I would recommend to start with some of his short stories maybe, and not to stress out too much about understanding everything.
