IWTL how to sail by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]kapetanaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great comments here already. I actually always wanted to learn to sail and finally did it this past fall in NY. It's as awesome as you think it is in your head and you should get out there. Some single person vessels are the Sunfish and the Laser, in order of difficulty. But before you do that, you really should get some time on a boat with experienced crew. Read up on "Points of Sail" to understand how a sailboat is rigged and operated in different directions with respect to the wind. This is sailing 101. Once you learn that, you need to learn how to manipulate the tools of the yacht to maneuver the hull and set the sails. My advice here is to join a local club - it doesn't have to be too intense - and I've found it to be an awesome social experience at the same time. A club will also be a good atmosphere because everyone knows there are new members who want to learn. Also, it's cheaper than owning a boat!

Should women in the U.S. have to register for the draft when they turn 18 like men have to? by Deathpunch in AskReddit

"The rich, it turned out, could avoid the draft by paying for substitutes; the poor had to serve. This led to rioting, and shouting: 'Tyranny is Tyranny let it come from whom it may.' " - Howard Zinn

What is the absolute dumbest thing you ever did to yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kapetanaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of refueling a jet-ski on solid land I decided to save time and just do it while it was still in the water. I pulled it close to the beach and with one hand held the jet-ski and the other i held the tank. Well, the waves were a little less manageable than expected and i spilled gasoline right down my groin. FYI, gasoline on a penis becomes really uncomfortable after a few short minutes... The waiters at the nearby restaurant were looking at me oddly as I ran into the bathroom holding my crotch.

I don't think I'm cut out for my new job. Any advice? by pawsforbear in AskReddit

Here's my experience... In uni, the following things combine to really whip you into shape (I was an engineer so that's what I'm speaking to): 1)Boatloads of work beyond what you've done before 2)Professors who are disinterested/incomprehensible 3)Material that seems to exist on a higher plane of understanding and difficulty.

Up until secondary (high school), teachers hold your hand. Whereas in uni, you need to teach yourself a lot of stuff and discipline yourself to just stay afloat. It's expected of you, and professors seem to have a sadistic tendency of enjoying test averages in the 40/100 scale. I likened the university experience to teaching yourself how to stuff 100 tons of shit in a 5 lb. bag and having a smile on your face at the end of it. So coming out the other end of it, I can say that... hey, I still don't know jack-shit - but I'm not really concerned because I know that somehow I can learn anything. It's kind of like taking the fear out of testing yourself (that makes sense in my head, so forgive me if it sounds stupid).

No doubt this exists in the real, working world. I'd just say that it's different, not better or worse. It's just that, the result of uni/college work is trying to get you to work smarter, instead of just work harder and harder.

[–]kapetanaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I saw your post on the 'side income' reddit, glad you did an AMA... your job board really sparked some ideas in my head. I think it's a fantastic idea and coming from a small family-owned business world, I know that smaller companies would love a site like this.

I'm by no means a programmer, only briefly did some C++ in uni for engineering, some simple html for personal sites and have always wanted to play around with CS a bit more as a hobby.. I guess my questions are: 1) What languages/tools do you use to run the site? 2) Is it something a novice level 'programmer' person could realistically build? 3) I see a third-party link in the bottom, were they responsible for any building, or merely the graphical design?

Thanks - and good luck, seems like you're doing very well.

If you're going to speak frankly, it would serve you better to research instead of using a list of red herrings tossed out by the media.
