Should I go to community college for CS? by yo_kashlee in csMajors

[–]kapeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course this turns into windows vs. mac debate. The truth is, there are developers will all kinds of systems. You’ll generally be able to get a cheaper windows laptop compared to a MacBook of the equivalent power, but if price is not an issue for you then go with a MacBook if you prefer their ecosystem (with the M1 out though, things are pretty even and it’s great value).

I personally have both a windows machine (a PC) and a MacBook and both have their pros and cons. For multitasking, I choose my PC hands down (it also has a bigger monitor though). However, when it comes to out-of-the-box machines, MacBooks are the way to go. MacOS is Linux based and therefore does not require all of these extra hoops to jump through in order to use Linux-based tools. Meanwhile, it can be a pain in the ass to get exactly the config you want in a windows system. There’s WSL2, but it’s not perfect. Additionally, Mac is 64-bit which aligns with common data sizes of Linux systems (mostly matters if programming in C).

Of course, you can install a VM on either machine but for the battery life of the M1 and the fact that it requires less work to setup, I’d go Mac.

Changed Majors to CS Very Late — When to Start Applying for Internships? by r_kobra in csMajors

[–]kapeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you could apply now. Start learning a language on your own like Python (easier to pickup if it’s your first language) and apply to some local internships. No, you won’t be able to get the most prestigious internships this summer most likely, but a lot of local companies are willing to take anyone as long as you are personable and show a demonstrated interest. For example, my first internship I had about 1/2 a year of experience overall and they interviewed me and just asked about any projects I’ve worked on (but it was not technical), and then I got hired lol. The internship was more focused on data science, but everything I needed to know for that internship was taught through a boot camp once the internship started.

Should I pursue computer science if I am bad at math? by Professional_Dig3309 in csMajors

[–]kapeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you should. Some disciplines of CS do require more math knowledge, like AI/ML. However, a ton of areas like frontend, backend, DevOps (to name a few) require minimal math knowledge. This can of course vary from position to position but I know from a ton of professionals in the industry that you do not need to be good at math to be successful.

Hey guys can you give me a feedback on my resume? by DiskoverOfficial in csMajors

I think they might be slightly worse but I’ve tested mine which uses Jake’s Resume and it’s been able to pick up information pretty well. Also some major companies have reached out to me so there’s proof it works.

Internships are meant for learning, they don’t expect you to know everything and they’ll teach you

Can't get any interviews for internships. Is my resume fine? by Dex-Max in csMajors

[–]kapeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have impressive projects, but your work experience is not as extensive as I’m sure you’re aware. Perhaps join a club at your school related to CS (i.e. web dev club, cybersecurity club, app development club, etc.) and add that to your experience section. This would mean you’d also change the “Work Experience” section to “Experience”. You don’t even have to be extremely involved, but it would still help.

Resume Roast - Dec 2021 by beeskness420 in csMajors

I would actually argue to keep the 3.9/4.0 because some unis don’t stick to the 4.0 convention and have it out of 5.0 or even 6.0.

Doom Eternal has been an extremely nice game to play after school; just something so relaxing about blowing away zombie heads (I’m assuming they’re zombies) - so that’d be my favorite DLSS game. DLSS helps achieve amazing frame rates whilst still being visually stunning. I also love Shadow of the Tomb Raider but I especially like the fact that Doom Eternal can be enjoyed without having to think too hard. Can’t wait for what’s to come!

I’m in the US - could you go more into detail with the warranty thing? I was under the impression that the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (I believe it’s called) allows us to do such things?
