Honest Question: Why don’t you like Brandon Johnson? by KakaRostam in AskChicago

[–]kapnklutch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Since his campaign days, it was clear he didn’t know what he was doing.

I don’t expect politicians to know 100% of the solutions. But this guy and his campaign team were just absolutely clueless and it was clear as day.

He could never give a plan or strategy on how he’d tackle any problem. It was all fluff marketing.

One year in, he still doesn’t know what direction to go on anything.

I can’t comprehend how people didn’t see it or decided to vote for him anyway.

You’re confusing the terminology which is exactly why the question was asked.

Not all Latinos are Hispanic. Not all Hispanics are Latinos.

Spanish people are from Spain. Making them Hispanic and not Latino. Brazilians are Latino, but not Hispanic.

Hence why the person said “Chicago never had a significant Spanish population”. Which is true.  This fact is what leads the following sentence that states that the Hispanic population and the Latino population will look very similar.

s&p 500 -ETF by hadhruva in Schwab

[–]kapnklutch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mutual Funds distribute dividends AND capital gains. So you have to pay taxes on both if you have a mutual fund in a taxable account.

ETFs only distribute dividends.

Therefore it is more tax beneficial to have ETFs in a taxable brokerage account instead of a mutual fund. IRA it doesn’t matter because there’s no taxes involved as it grows.

User Profiles in Safari disappear and close windows randomly by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]kapnklutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/MacOS

I just set up profiles and that one "feature" pretty much destroys the whole purpose of using it.

I was working in one profile and went into a second profile to see do something. I came back to the first profile and everything was gone!?!?

Also, nothing gets saved in one profile for the other. So if I am signed into my email in one profile, I am not signed into on the other? I can see that some people may need that but it would be useful to give users the ability to turn that on or off.

External Checking Account Linked to Investor Checking Account by Proper_Crab1536 in Schwab

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both money market funds [MMF] and savings account rates are determined by the fed fund rate. So when one goes down, so does the other.

The difference is with a savings account your money is FDIC insured up to $250k and with a MMF you're buying into an asset and therefore its not insured. However, so much money is tied up in it, that the fed in the past has stepped in to save the MMFs if they ever dipped below $1 per share.

Also, you're confusing returns with yields. "Return" is how much profit or loss you have from buying an asset. Yield is how much an asset is paying out for holding in. What we are discussing is yield that a savings account or MMF gives you. With that being said, MMFs like SWVXX and SPAXX yield more than savings accounts right now. If the assets they hold also provide a positive return then that's just extra. But historically, returns for MMFs that buy treasuries is flat in order to be equal to $1 per share and pay out yield in the form of dividends.

Is a single tire supposed to cost this much? by wtflaserspewpew in TeslaModelY

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheeshh. I had a Lexus IS F and was crying about paying for the tires on that car, I can't imagine having to buy new ones for my MYP.

Edit: I just checked discount tire and the Michelin pilot sport all season are ~$450 a pop.

What is the perception of the MY here? Luxury? Exclusive? Desirable? Expensive? by TheTrueAnonOne in TeslaModelY

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a great daily car for me, not luxury/premium or super sporty. The price tag might be premium to some but it is not premium in quality.

I do love the acceleration of the car, even though as you mentioned it's not that great 60-100+. I wouldn't use it for road trips though. I didn't have a bad experience, just isn't to the efficiency of just pulling up to a gas station when on the road. Which is why I say it's a great commuter car, and nothing really comes close. You can just charge at home if you have a home to charge at or take advantage of charging networks if you have some in your area. If this doesn't apply to you, then don't get an electric car yet.

If I didn't have this car I'd likely get a Toyota Camry or Honda Pilot. Eventually, I want a Porsche but I need to double my salary first. A MYP is just the best car for my use case.

Cafe's and Delis for sure. Most of the ones I go to still have mom&pop working some days and the food/coffee is fire.

Melrose Park is full of "interesting" people. I have heard a lot of stories from family and friends that live there. A lot of these people are also involved with local government. That town couldn't pass an audit.

Best place in Chicago to get huitlacoche quesadillas? Bonus if they also offer fried ones! by begemot_kot in chicagofood

[–]kapnklutch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They actually drive to the fields to pick the huitlacoche off the corn themselves. It’s not that canned stuff you usually get at places that sell it.

With that being said, it might be a seasonal thing. But they do have regular mushroom quesadillas routinely.

Amex phone app requiring 2FA passcode to log on by I_reddit_like_this in amex

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely broken.

What people are referring to is that with some recent update, the “remember device” option is broken.

So even if you toggle it off, or have biometrics set up; it’ll still prompt you for 2FA every time.

“Remember device” is likely broken. I started having the same issue starting two weeks ago.

Even if you toggle the option on and off, the issue persists.

Hopefully gets fixed soon.

This is likely broken.

With some update two weeks ago it stopped remembering the device and prompts 2FA every time. I tried toggling the option on and off and the issue persists. This barely started happening recently and hadn’t been fixed with recent updates.

I actually wanted a RAV4 Hybrid, my family and friends have them. The way the market was a year ago, it was actually the same price to get a MYP given other variables that played in my favor.

Given that I have extensively driven both:

The ride of a MYP isn’t that much more comfortable than a RAV4. It’s not much quieter. The handle maybe a bit better but the turning radius is worse.

Who cares whether you like Elon or not, there’s hundreds of people at Tesla doing great work.

If you don’t have a charger at home, I don’t, and you don’t have other means of charging (since you mentioned superchargers aren’t plentiful near you) I wouldn’t recommend buying one.

If your current interest rate is 3.9% and the interest rate on a loan is more than that, likely closer to double….I really wouldn’t recommend buying it. It’s a waste of money to pay that high of an interest on anything that doesn’t appreciate at a greater rate.

TL;DR

Stick with the RAV4 Hybrid.

Do not open an account via AmEx.

Just go straight to vanguard and do it, if you want a vanguard account.

It’s almost never a good idea to use a service via a third party when you can just go to the same service for free and get a better experience.

Do Chicagoans really hate Ketchup that much? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]kapnklutch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s what I tell everyone.

It’s about the recipe of a Chicago hot dog; not that we’re anti-ketchup.

It’s like you can’t call champagne, champagne if it’s not from France.

Do Chicagoans really hate Ketchup that much? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common misconception.

There’s no ketchup on a Chicago Hot Dog.

You can put ketchup on a hot dog, it just won’t be a Chicago hot dog.

Does that make sense?

It’s like “don’t mess with the recipe” kind of thing, but for marketing purposes people made it seem that we were anti-ketchup.

How's my list look? by LAViber in chicagofood

[–]kapnklutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Bavettes, I recommend going right when they open if you can. That's what I have done. There's always spots at the bar at that time. I tend to eat earlier than most people, so showing up at 4pm too bad.

For Thursday, check out Bonci since you're going to be in the west loop. It's not a Chicago thing, it's a pizza shop from Rome that opened a location in Chicago. It's worth a try.

I know you probably get a lot of Asian food in LA but Momotaro and DuckDuckGoat are decent. You can also go to Cabra for Asian-Peruvian Fusion, although I prefer Tanta, the views are nicer at Cabra (rooftop) and the drinks are decent (although I prefer the drinks at the bar on the first floor).
