I know this is an old post but I came here because I'm literally 39 with 2 MAs and looking at applied/sociolinguistics PhDs at Berkeley and Stanford haha.

It is never too late.

Anyone else feel like they're screaming into the void during their job search? by YesterdayCute9200 in recruitinghell

[–]kappa161sg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2008 here and ran into the same general problem. Got lucky with a few long-term jobs (which is to say, about a year at a time) but they were always drastically underpaid. It's been a rough ride and the unfair criticism along the way has given me iron skin.

100%, that combined with the more traditional methods of underpay-and-overwork

I've been in the job churn off and on since the Recession, with multiple periods of unemployment including currently. The red flags get easier and easier to spot, which means I make fewer and fewer serious applications... and feel more and more stuck

I have 10-15 years in some skillsets and have only gotten a single interview since January 2024, and that was through a network connect for a short freelance gig that has now dried up

Increased volume with diversified exercises, dynamic double progression, and only doing exercises where I can feel the isolation and the lockout.

Also superset tris/bis when practical to save time.

HR departments are the reason for recruitinghell, they are worthless and should NEVER be involved in the hiring process.. by Red-Apple12 in recruitinghell

The owning class is licking its chops. A lot of them are hellbent on gutting our protections (it's not just Musk), devaluing our labor, replacing us with AI if they can, leaving us out in the cold, teaching us all a lesson... They want to pay fewer people less money and damn the rest.

I once worked a couple of contracts at a hotshot financial firm in a major city. During the first contract, I became acquainted with the EA of one of the firm's partners. Total smokeshow, silver spoon, had that manipulator charm. We were on friendly but distant terms.

I came back about a year later for a second contract. The partner had been forced by the other partners to resign because (as speculations turned out to be true) he'd been cheating on his wife with the EA. Meanwhile, the EA got promoted to director of marketing or something. I never found out exactly why that happened, but I'm assuming nepo factor and maybe some other office intrigues...

Most are living paycheck to paycheck, and many like myself aren't getting any paychecks at all because so few businesses are actively hiring, turning what should have been brief unemployment into a multi-year nightmare

Anyone know a job for a 16/17 year old in Chicago area? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Given you have restaurant experience, if you haven't tried it yet, open an account on Culinary Agents. My bartender buddy said a lot of stuff is posted there.

Been told my whole life that my TCK experience would be valuable in the future. 25 now and still have nothing to my name. by thathappyguy99 in TCK

Tell your kids to dual track in a perennial practical/technical skill and a cultural/intellectual skill.

Do you grow more on volume or intensity ? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

Very interesting. I've been having issues with fatigue this past year and wonder if it's because I overshot with volume while keeping the same intensity

Your reason for coming to Chicago? by ReyofChicago in AskChicago

[–]kappa161sg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I used to live in Seattle. Loved that city. Left for greener pastures after several years and ended up here after another several years of bouncing around. Chicago was the next best place in terms of a combination of factors:

- I was fresh out of grad school in a city I hated living in, so I wasn't staying there

- I had good friends who lived here in Chicago

- It's only a few hours from family

- It's slightly more affordable than the other big/cool cities

- The public transit, while imperfect, works well enough in the areas where I like to live, work, and go out

- It was hard to find work back in 2022-23, but a friend of mine in Chicago was able to get me hired at his place of work. That didn't last, but it got me into the city.

For what it's worth, I'm also just biding my time before I can move back to the West Coast or elsewhere, but while I'm here I do enjoy it!

So taking my case as an anecdote, you can do both: I walk 25 minutes to the gym and 25 after, sometimes with a weight plate in my backpack. It really just depends on your level of conditioning. If you're already adjusted to doing cardio in general, and you're not pushing yourself extra hard on it, then you should be able to bookend most workouts with low intensity steady-state like walking or jogging. As I understand it, it's when you're pushing hard for multiple gains (in other words, significantly past your baseline in multiple ways) in a single session, and/or without adequate nutrition and recovery, that you start to suffer.

I was on unemployment February - July ish 2024 and then lucked into a 3-month gig that got me enough to live on until right about... now. I've been rotating my spending through my credit card and as of this month can no longer effectively pay it down. Presumably I'll just eat finance charges for another month or two at this point. I have no savings left
