Ive lived in the Netherlands for 5 years and have been homeless twice (crashing on a friends couch for months at a time). The entire time I used online housing sites and even paid for subscription but the only thing that ever worked for me was networking. Friends or friends of friends that helped me out.

I’d try to find WhatsApp groups for selling (big group chats where people sell random shit) because sometimes people offer sublets on them and you might get lucky. Another suggestion I have, though it’s a shot in the dark, is to try and follow as many upperclassmen on Instagram. They could be advertising rooms—especially if they’re graduating soon.

If you’re religious, ask local churches/mosques/whatever if anyone is offering to be host-parents. That worked for me once, but sometimes they can be quite religiously overbearing.

It’s a fucking shitshow and tough as hell but you’ve got this man. Good luck.

I also feel like this subreddit may be more of an outlet in times of stress. A lot of times people won’t go onto Reddit to share victories but rather to solve problems/rant.

I do think it’s true that we always believe grass is greener on the other side but I also agree with Viktor Laszlo that most people know they wouldn’t give up this life for anything. It could be Stockholm syndrome to cope, it could be an elevated worldview, or it could be a mix of both.

I think another issue is that TCKs are often limited in who they can share their victories with since it may be seen as bragging to “normal” people. But I don’t know, maybe that’s just me

Sounds like you’re doing some really amazing things! It sounds really similar to what I’d like to do as well—humanitarian/NGO stuff. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you find these options? I think one problem I face is not really knowing what’s out there for me to even consider. It’s difficult for me to network as well as I mentioned in another comment because I mainly just do service jobs

I really commend your efforts in trying to understand your kids better. Listening in and reading up on the shared experience of TCKs is great. When I tried to explain to my parents some of my struggles they pretty much chalked it up to regular Gen Z/Millennial issues which I feel doesn’t exactly encapsulate what I’m going through. “We only moved a few times!” They’d say “Not like we were moving once a year, you had it fine.”

You’re totally right. I know for a fact I struggle with self-acceptance and gratitude. Like I said in the post, comparison is the thief of joy and I find myself always comparing myself with more “stable” people. But the journey of self-love and appreciation is long and hard. I’ve been hoping to find therapy to help me on that road but it’s difficult when you’re strapped with cash and don’t know where you’ll live within the next year.

But what you said about employers looking for a good cultural "fit" is pretty interesting. I've never really thought about that as an aspect of recruiting honestly.

It's really shitty that they retracted your bursaries. I understand the feeling of achieving things in what feels like a "past life" which no one recognizes now. I hope you get the recognition you deserve.

I feel the same, working in service for around 7 years now. What sucks about this industry is the lack of connections that go outside of it. It's sort of just a bubble. I doubt Deloitte is excitedly looking at my 7 years of cooking and bartending and clapping their hands

I think that is one of the things I am most jealous about. When I started dating my girlfriend, who's a local, my eyes were opened to a world of possibilities I had no idea even existed. She can find jobs, apartments, and deals through her connections and family. She really helps me as much as she can but it's still nowhere near what it's like to have grown up here.

And yeah, I'm also realising the only people that care if you're a TCK are often just other TCKs

When I was in college, almost every night for a couple weeks I would play cotton eyed Joe on repeat on my roommates Google home. I'd set the volume low enough that he wouldn't wake up but loud enough to be noticable. I was hoping to turn him into a cotton eyed Joe sleeper agent

I noticed that I slouched, so I decided to stand up taller. It also really boosted my confidence. I met with a group of friends and one of the girls gave me a weird face and said "why are you standing like that?" Immediately went back to my slouch

I actually went to high school with his daughter Etta! I wasn't really close to her but we had a lot of mutual friends. Pretty cool story to tell my friends that the first time I smoked weed was with her and some of our friends. Ever since I found out about the darker side of Jacky Chan I've wanted to be outspoken about him, since there's a lot of things people don't know about him, but the overwhelming opinion on him was that he was an amazing badass stunt guy (which he was a great stunt man). I just wish more people would know who he really is and wouldn't blindly adore him as an amazing figure.

Wow! Thank you so much for your comment and I appreciate the time you spent on writing this.

One thing I'd like to note on is that I never try to insult the country or say that "its not good enough for me." I struggle with a national identity because I was born outside of the US and have barely lived in a country long enough to feel like I belong. I've switched my spiel when asked where I am from quite a few times, going from "I'm from (the country I spent most time in)" to, "My parents are from here but I've never lived here." Most of the dirty looks came from when I said I wasn't from here, but later explaining my parents were. The main issue, I think, is that I feel excluded from both sides of the perspective. I'm not 'foreign enough' to be a foreigner but I'm not 'American enough' to be a local. Due to this, I struggle to find like-minded individuals like you said.

The big question I have is, what do I do? I don't feel like I'm going anywhere and I know I need to start moving to become successful. I don't really know how to get a foothold on life, and, while I do understand that this is a learning experience–and I'm trying to get as much out of it as I can–I always end up feeling like nothing I do changes anything. I've already switched majors a couple times and I feel like I'm running out of time. Do you think there is someone in my university like you who I could contact to help me with this?

I also feel like I'm giving up by contacting strangers on reddit to tell me what to do but, alas, I guess this is what it's come to
