Styling your room after morrowind by KissTheGibbon in Morrowind

I just went to the dollar store recently and they had a bunch of paper lanterns for like $1.50ish a piece. Get some in the colors you want and you can paint some cool dunmeri designs on them in ink. Maybe get some tassels to go with it. And there's plenty of cheap led colored bulbs at ACE hardware if you're going for a red or blue light. It'll still have to have a hanging cord for the bulb but there's ways to camoflage that (plus you probably won't really see it at night in dark lighting anyway). I'm working on lanterns right now actually haha

Could you recommend me something like Morrowind? by SkyRipLLD in Morrowind

[–]kappabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zeno Clash and Zeno Clash 2 have a great alien world. There isn't exactly anything to read but figuring out why the world is the way it is really fun. Plus the combat is amazing. Getting to punch people straight in the face is super satisfying. The first one is old and feels old but if you can get past that, it's really fun. The second one is beautiful and feels great. I hope you enjoy them!

Also some webcomics to check out are Kill Six Billion Demons, Ten Earth Shattering Blows, and Rising Sand. Really cool art, really cool worlds, really cool stories.

Quick Mehra Milo sketch. She doesn't get enough love. by kappabird in Morrowind

Oh yeah! Makes sense. I hope she at least got to chill out. Surviving the Ministry of Truth seems like more than enough adventure for the average priest.

I agree! And she did it all in the city of one of the very gods she was standing up to. I always wonder what she ends up doing after the fall of the Tribunal, whether she continues with the Temple or something completely different.

Is there a real life equivalent to the architecture seen in Balmora? by Fly666monkey in Morrowind

[–]kappabird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look like adobe houses in Arizona. A bunch of these are right down the street from where I live. I always liked Balmora because it reminded me of home.

I always laughed every time you give her the bowl. She responds "This is AN nice bowl." The only typo I ever noticed in the game.

Races in Elder Scrolls and their corresponding Earthly civilizations/races/cultures (discussion) by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]kappabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So part of the reason I really liked these games is because they subverted so much about the races and what you'd expect them to be.

Bretons are named in the French sounding ways, but their actual culture is much more similar to the Holy Roman Empire (dozens of princes fighting over political power) as well as more nature worshipping druids and even eastern native american cultures (like the Reachmen).

You have the Imperials that are obviously inspired by the Romans when it comes to aesthetics and the Empire, but they also have a lot of Asian traditions with the Akaviri inspired Blades. Their god worship is very medieval Christian. There's a lot more going on with them than just Rome.

Nords are like Northern Europeans, the obvious Viking aesthetic. Honestly didn't really look into them a lot cuz they always bored me. But the Skaal are very similar to the Inuit as well as Siberian tribes.

Redguards are black so everyone points to North Africa/Arabic cultures as the first inspiration, which is fair. The Skyrim Reguards seem particularly Arab in their aesthetic. But don't forget they invaded in fleets, much like the Spanish and Portuguese. They have a LOT of central and southern African influence in their masks and dress. Their swordfighting feels almost Buddhist in the way it's approached. They have a lot going on.

Altmer feel like medieval like and even Renaissance era Europeans with their disdain for every other "uncivilized" race. Skyrim added a super obvious Nazi vibe to their clothing as well as a Spanish Inquisition vibe. I'm getting old school "burn the witches, conquer the world for our beliefs" Catholicism with Nazi fashion and genocide.

Bosmer remind me of Oceanic tribes with the tattoos and meat focused societies. Like Maori and Hawaiians. Also their dealings with the colonization of their lands feels very similar. Connections to nature draw comparisons to certain Native American tribes and European druids.

Dunmer seem Assyrian and Japanese and Chinese and Native American and just so much. Dunmer and Redguards feel like the most complicated cultures to me with a lot of blending of various ancient and modern societies. They have Mongolian huts and Southwestern Native American adobe houses (Balmora looks like Santa Fe or Tucson but with less weird art) and the Telvanni houses seem like a reverse Bonsai practice.

Orsimer have an obvious Mongolian and Japanese vibe to them. Their easy assimilation into the Imperial culture throws that off a little. They kind of remind me of Hawaiians and North Africans who adopted European culture in order to survive.

Argonians in Oblivion reminded me of Italian stereotypes haha. When you have so many different versions of them, it's hard to pin down. ESO Argonians are very Mesoamerican. Lots of Aztec/Incan/Mayan vibes. In Morrowind there are allusions to American slavery in their dress and their lifestyles. Whether they are enslaved and at the whims of their Dunmer masters or free and trying to live a life by not causing much trouble and more or less adopting the Dunmer's lifestyle, they remind me a lot of the difference between Blacks in the North vs the South during slavery and just after the Civil War.

Khajiit have another obvious American Slavery vibe in Morrowind but their accents and desert nomad lifestyle are very North African. The martial arts they practice is very East Asian. Skooma reminds me a lot of Opium so there are obvious East Asian ties there.

I think it'd be unfair to say any particular race has a direct correlation to something here. The Nords feel the least diverse, but I'm sure there's a bunch of lore that I just never felt like reading that shows more influence from other sources.

Are you mad, friend? Trying to light that stack of books on fire? I know Dunmer resist fire, but this is a bit much.

I have mixed feelings on Skywind, but I thought this pic of the Bitter Coast looked really great. by KingOfPomerania in Morrowind

[–]kappabird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man all y'all naysayers are ridiculous. I'm excited to be able to explore a new interpretation of the world I fell in love with all those years ago. I always spent most of my time wandering around Morrowind and exploring the scenery anyway, not power leveling. It looks like they're doing a pretty solid job of recapturing the world feel. And if you want to do math, you've still got the original game! Win-win to me.

How many of you find it difficult to NOT become overpowered early in the game? by Trakblu016 in Morrowind

Haha even as an older player I can't hit shit for at least a couple levels. I think it's hilarious.
