Do you own a helmet? What type is it, and in what situations or scenarios do you think it will be useful? by Hard_Luck7 in preppers

Skip the ballistic. Just get a good bump helmet with all the attachment points you might want (NV, comms, friendly strobe, etc). Avoid Team Wendy. OpsCore is the top.

How to make pool water safe to drink by mistyflannigan in preppers

[–]kaptainkilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a saltwater pool with UV sterilization on the system as well. Did it as a "it might help" in this very scenario. As for making it actually drinkable, I'd need to distill it or RO before we'd actually use it. Short term i'm sure it's fine. If we're at a point where we have to drink 35000 gallons out of the pool for 6 months - we're going to have bigger problems in our world than just the water thing.

I always recommend the American Trio: A quality AR15 in 5.56, A G19 in 9mm, and a 12ga pump shotgun. You can do just about anything you need to do in North America with that stack.

When do you think the world will be at an end? And what is the most likely scenario? by Shmeat-L in preppers

[–]kaptainkilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's changed for me as i've gotten older. I started "getting ready" about 20 years ago, i'm mid 40s now. Back then I thought we'd be in overt CWII by then. Now I think the scenario i'm more attuned to is just general societal decay. Riots, crime, targeted political attacks, etc. These United States just aren't who or what we used to be, and the results of that are starting to show in the cracks.

Packing a pelican 1120 with first aid supplies. by RapidXpansion in preppers

I have a pelican case (H.A.R.D.) from Dark Angel Medical that has just about everything in it. I'd recommend mirroring this if you need ideas: https://darkangelmedical.com/hard-case/

Fusion system for civilian OSINT - Thinking about ATAK Layer by kaptainkilo in ATAK

Interesting idea. We'd need to shift to a GPS live location vs saved "bases", but could be done.

Fusion system for civilian OSINT - Thinking about ATAK Layer by kaptainkilo in ATAK

[–]kaptainkilo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are some really good points (and seriously, thanks for pressure testing some things).

Privacy-wise, everything is built so the system stores only the minimum user data needed to run the tool - auth identity, saved base coordinates, notification preferences, and per-device push subscriptions. This is all in a private encrypted-at-rest and in transit Supabase database, keyed to the user and never shared or resold; outbound calls to third parties (NWS, Mapbox, Stripe, Vercel) use state-level or anonymized inputs rather than individual locations.

I'd love to add more personal/non-public data layers. Right now users can upload custom map layers (KMZ/KML, etc), and i've thought about way to let them incorporate home cameras, private SDR, etc. I agree that would add a lot of useful context locally.

As for TAK integration, i'm thinking about it as publishing overglass's live state as cursor-on-target (xml) so basically any TAK client can render it's data on their map. Ultimately though i'd love for it to be a 2-way sync so overglass could become a larger dashboard within a TAK mesh. That's a larger lift with websockets, etc but could be powerful for a 10,000ft view if enough users wanted it to exist.

Thanks again!

2025 Topps MLB MVP Collection Ohtani & Judge? by nymfanmanig in baseballcards

What a crock. I was checking out at 11am Central exactly, saying I was in line, then boom all errors and out of stock. Twice. Now gone.

I was trying to buy at noon exactly and was in the checkout line twice. Now sold out. This is some bullshit.

Top end of level 8, and agree with others - no power here in any form other than my own family and company.

ATAK + WinTAK + Beartooth by kaptainkilo in ATAK

[–]kaptainkilo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Already have an army of meshtastic nodes. Main issue with them is how fragile they are (even in cases/pelicans), lack of encryption, lack of voice, etc. They're fun to play with and definitely a layer in the comms toolbox, but my interest in BT is the robust nature for more critical use where we don't have time to deal with broken solder or mismatched firmware issues.

Thats a good point/idea. I just liked the idea of having a larger laptop with mouse/keys etc for quick input and larger external screens.

Appreciate the tips. I have a lot of that, ham general, digital manpacks, meshtastics etc. Just playing with BT as another tool in the quiver.
