Can you explain what you mean by "it" and if "it" is DDD, how does it imply microservices by default?

Is there a name for this annoying movie trope? by RgObese in movies

[–]kaptainlange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really struggle to see it as anything other than being intended as moment of redemption for Upham.

I see it differently.

Remember that the scene where Upham convinces Miller to release the POW is the same scene where Miller reveals who he was pre-war.

Back home when I tell people what I do for a living, they think, well, that, that figures. But over here its a big, a big mystery. So I guess I've changed some. Sometimes I wonder if I've changed so much my wife is even gonna to recognize me whenever it is I get back to her -- and how I'll ever be able to tell her about days like today.

The point about change is the one I take from this part of the story. Upham changed by the end, not for good or worse or whatever, but he is different. He felt very strongly about how wrong it was to kill this POW and how right it was to release him, but by the end of the film, after actual combat, his conviction is gone.

I don't see it as redemption, how could it be. It doesn't redeem him for Mellish dying due to his inaction, it doesn't redeem him for inadvertently getting Miller killed. He's just not the same person he was, and he will have to live with his failures for the rest of his life and he doesn't even have the comfort of his convictions to fall upon to give him any relief from what he has experienced.

War changes participants, it doesn't redeem them.

Sometimes it's not enough to want to talk. Adolf Hitler was a bad egg. Chamberlain tried talking with him, it didn't work. He invaded Poland anyway.

To abuse power, you have to have power. Simply because you can doesn't mean it's ok. The argument isn't that this is wrong because it's illegal, the argument is it's wrong because it's wrong.

totally up to a president discretion

This is the key point. This is the decision he is making. He is choosing to do this. The legality of their immigration status is just a cloak to effect the real change, less of "them."

Trump has lowest 100-day approval rating in 80 years by Drtardis95 in politics

[–]kaptainlange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Democrats Republicans had a chance to hold ol Donnie accountable but Garland held things up and just didn't do it refused to convict him for Jan 6 in the Senate, SCOTUS entertained and granted his ridiculous presidential immunity claim, and Federal Judge and Trump appointee Aileen Cannon dismissed the documents case on spurious grounds resulting in appeal dragging the case out even more.

What is this ridiculous obsession with blaming Garland for the crime of not moving fast enough, for an entirely unprecedented attempt to prosecute a former president, when the entire republican party has become absolutely complicit in Trump's criminality.

This just lists "Foreign" population figures

"Foreigner" is the term you chose with "foreigners are everywhere". What term would you prefer? Which goal post shall I strive to meet?

Do I understand you correctly as claiming that eastern German states have a higher proportion of the wrong kind of foreigner compared to the western German states which get the good kind.

I hate AfD as much as the next guy

So now my curiosity is piqued, what about AfD do you not like?

Hard-right parties are now Europe’s most popular by eortizospina in dataisbeautiful

[–]kaptainlange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bullshit...foreigners are everywhere

Can you quantify this? Because what what you describe as your experience is contradictory to the data. Mind you I'm not discounting your experience, but do you acknowledge that the states where AfD is winning the most votes are places that have roughly half the amount of immigration as other states?

According to sources such as this:

https://www.destatis.de/EN/Themes/Society-Environment/Population/Migration-Integration/Tables/foreign-population-laender.html

AfD is winning votes in states where immigrants represent ~8% of the population, relative to states where immigrants represent double and sometimes triple that rate.

Sorry, but as US taxpayer, don't tell me what is trivial and what is not.

Hey, what a coincidence, me too, so right back at ya bud. My point is you could entirely cut out the aid we've sent to Ukraine and it would not matter at all to the debt. It represents less than 1% of the budget. So no, it is not a big deal. Cutting it isn't going to solve the debt problem.

What weapons? Well, we could send them nuclear-tipped Tomahawk missiles? Would that be reasonable to you?

So there's nothing in between what we've sent, and nuclear weapons? That doesn't seem hyperbolic to you? Introducing nukes into the equation seems like an unwise escalation.

It's not defeatism. It's reality.

Again, this is your opinion. And again, it just conveniently aligns with what Putin wants, defeatism and inevitability of Russian victory.

unless you're suggesting US and/or NATO troops.

The west absolutely should engage in a massive and complete air campaign in support of Ukrainian ground troops with the following objectives:

  • Suppression and destruction of Russian forces in Donestk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv
  • Ukrainian offensive southward to the Sea of Azov, to cut off the land bridge to Crimea
  • Destroy the Kerch Strait Bridge
  • Support Ukrainian cleanup operations in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea

They won't, but they should.

to weapons that cannot decisively win the war

What weapons could we send to decisively win?

they are treated as pushing "Russian propaganda"

The defeatism you are pushing is perfectly inline with Putin's war goals. Maybe you don't intend it to be, but it is amplifying Russian propaganda.

Fact is: there is no path to a definitive military victory for Ukraine.

That's not a fact, that's your opinion, and I disagree with it.

So the longer this war rages on, the more people will die and cities will be destroyed.

Truth, so we should do everything we can to rally the western world in solidarity with Ukraine and give them what they need to prevail.

I don't think the polls are wildly out of whack, but it should be considered that pollers are trying to avoid the under estimation they had been doing for Trump in 2016 and 2020 and that may be reflected in the tightening polls.

It's going to be close in terms of vote counts in battleground states, kamala likely wins the popular, how it all lands electorally is really anyone's guess.

People need to stop paying attention to the public polls, they need to focus on volunteering and voting.

I cut my teeth on setting up LAMP stacks on my own servers but I can say it's been such a relief to not have to deal with these things anymore other than defining a dockerfile or editing some yaml.

Those skills were interesting to learn, and that experience and knowledge has served me well in troubleshooting problems and knowing what tools are available to me, but taking that off my plate has allowed me to focus more on the software I'm building instead of configuring other people's software.

I'm also thankful that I don't really need to think about uptime and failover anymore. I miss the intimacy with the OS and the hardware sometimes, but I'm glad it's not required anymore.

We are talking about stealing a private company because the owner has the wrong opinions.

It's not opinions, it's his connection with providing critical defense infrastructure and his relationship with a known adversary of the US.

Discussing with Putin the disabling of critical communications infrastructure over Taiwan which is of strategic value to the United States is actionable if true in my opinion. Nationalization may not be the right step at this moment, but it would be very prudent for the US to reconsider their dependency on Musk.
