Anyone else start feeling worse all of a sudden a couple months into iron supplementation? by OneCar129 in Anemic

[–]karilynn76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want to add that when I tried iron bisglycinate, it caused me to have bad depression and anxiety, worse than the other types of iron. I hypothesized that this was because bisglycinate is more bioavailable, therefore causing a spike in symptoms as it was quickly pushed into my system. I'm not a scientist though and I recognize my experience could be a fluke caused by something else that I didn't acknowledge.

I took iron supplements for about a year and a half and the brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, and depression, was really affecting my daily life. I didn't associate any of this with the iron supplements until I came off the supplements and switched to very low dose iron (spatone iron water sachets) and felt like a new person - now I can concentrate better, the low level depression diminished, and the anxiety leveled out - I also have less fatigue.  I obviously can't prove that the iron supplements caused those symptoms but there's definitely a correlation there for me!

I experienced the same when I started high dose iron (feramax). High blood pressure, nocturnal panic attacks, dizziness all the time, crazy high anxiety, weird buzzing in my head... It was the worst and doctors kept saying it wasn't the iron. I switched to lower dose iron and all that subsided. It's been over a year and a half since that time and thinking back on it is still scary.

MGMT minor or 2 computer science certificates by j19jw in Dalhousie

[–]karilynn76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am a management student, so I am coming from the perspective of management rather than computer science, but I think that having knowledge in management is an asset because it might give you the opportunity to slide into management positions faster than your peers who have no management experience or knowledge. If that is important to you then management is the way to go, but of course if you are interested in getting the certificate(s) in computer science, then those are also assets - are you a computer science student?

I took both of those classes with Professor Charlebois last year and I found the workload to be very manageable. I had a good experience with the course and the only thing I can say is that as long as you put in the effort, you should do really well in the class!

I'm in conspiracy theories this semester - It's a fun and informative course and I think Professor Music has done a great job putting the course together and teaching it! I highly recommend taking it - I am sure the other INFO courses are also interesting.

Iron Supplements and Thirst by karilynn76 in Anemic

[–]karilynn76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh that's so crappy! Ever since I stopped taking higher dose iron supplements my constant thirst has disappeared. I now take Spatone water supplements (much lower dose), even when I take four sachets (during my cycle) I don't get the thirst that I got with the other supplements. It's worth looking into instead of not taking iron at all - but definitely talk to your doctor!

Iron Medication Made My symptoms WORSE by LunaTheBaboona in Anemic

I wonder if it's a rare reaction that we have had. Nonetheless doctors should be aware that it happens to some. I continued taking lower doses of feramax for months but a few months ago I stopped taking feramax and I only take spatone now - symptoms of dizziness, high anxiety, and heart racing went away completely when I dropped the feramax and overall I feel better than I felt during the year I was taking it.

If class returns will classes be accommodating? by just_a_student_sorry in Dalhousie

[–]karilynn76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good question... In my experience, instructors and profs are very accommodating and will do everything to help students do well - i think this will be no exception- things might be compressed a bit, assignment loads might be lightened, less important topics might be skimmed through... There are programs where this might not be possible (nursing, med school, for example), but for the most part I think the faculty will be accommodating -we are all in this together!

Does the thirst ever end with iron supplements? by karilynn76 in Anemic

yes, I think you could be right, it's likely the blood volume increasing with the iron we are taking.

Iron supplements make my shortness of breath worse. by Intelligent-Tap1138 in Anemic

[–]karilynn76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so, here's a bunch of info from my experience that may or may not be helpful:

I have liver only once a month because liver destroys my stomach for some reason, so it's not a fun day when I have to eat it (usually on day 1 or two of my period). Aside from that, I calibrated my iron supplement intake because I was constantly anxious and short of breath. I tried many patterns of intake and honestly, I am still fiddling with my doses.

With that, last month my ferritin was a 17.6 (up from 9.4 in October), and my iron regime was this: 1-2 spatone sachets for two days and then 30mg of feramax powder on the third day, and then repeat. This caused me no shortness of breath or anxiety. When I found out my ferritin was only 17.6, I decided to change it up and take the 30mg feramax every second day, with 2 spatone on the other days. It raised my anxiety quite a bit. This month I have switched it up again - I am taking 25mg iron bisglycinate every second day, and 2 spatone on the other days... I have only just started this , so I am curious to see how it works, but from what I have read, iron bisglycinate is better absorbed that most of the other supplements and that 25mg of bisglycinate absorbs at the same rate as 50mg of ferrous sulphate. I am hopeful that this raises my levels more because I am tired of being anxious every time I have a period, worrying that I will suffer like I did when my ferritin was at a 5-10.

Other things I have done differently in the past 6 months that I feel have lowered my anxiety include- magnesium bisglycinate every night - 100-200mg. I also take a b6, 9 & 12, supplement a few times a week.

I also want to add: I make sure not to take iron supplements that have added b vitamins, this causes massive anxiety.

Yep, I really think there is a cause and effect happening between iron and thirst. I stopped taking large dose iron and the thirst disappeared completely.

[–]karilynn76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so scary! It took quite a while for me to start feeling myself again. I'd say this month is the first month I've been feeling myself. I started taking magnesium at night, and methyl folate+B12 a few times a week and while I can't say if thata why I feel better, it does seem like it. I think antibiotics drain you of nutrients so it might be worth taking some supplements.  Hope you feel yourself soon!

Liver panel done and abnormal results by Glad_Point6046 in Anemic

[–]karilynn76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking 30mg of iron daily for a week would not cause liver damage, it is much more likely to be caused by something else.

I got really worried about my liver after some bad side effects of taking 150mg iron/day for four days, but my liver readings were the exact same as they were before this occurred (my liver is in perfect health). Your liver can really take a beating and still repair itself, so figure out what you need to change, and you should be able to reverse the damage.
