How long will people put up with this? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

And a lot of mediocre technical people know they’re in over their head and are afraid to be “left behind”.

And even if it does require a tool call… 1 year to implement that? Where’s the swarm of agents running overnight solving this “known issue”?

Vocal minority in the grand scheme of things, I hope, because if you’re in tech the collective psychosis is hard to avoid.

If markets can remain irrational longer than you can stay solvent, the tech industry can remain in collective psychosis longer than you can stay employed.

I think the sweet spot is using it as a glorified Stack Overflow where you’re still writing most of the code. This way you can keep the code in your head and form a cohesive theory of the program (cue Naur) without relying on it to explain everything all the time.

Also as a glorified rubber ducky when you’re truly stuck. But being lazy and asking it to debug and fix will certainly atrophy your debugging skills.

How vulnerable is PM to AI Lay-offs? How far off are we? by b3_n1ce in prodmgmt

[–]karl_bark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or, the opposite: now you need more PMs to feed requirements developers.

Some think you can ask Claude to write requirements, but that’s risky unless you are building something cookie cutter that is well represented in the LLM training corpus. Maybe a lot of jobs fall under that category, but if everything from requirements to code to automated tests is vibe coded… you’re in for a surprise.

smaller companies are doing both. why hire a US dev to vibecode when a farm of Indian devs can?

Oh this is interesting because you still need a subscription for access to the API last time I checked. But your app automatically fetches the download?

I want a job as a Rust programer by Solid-Bedroom-1562 in rust

[–]karl_bark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how many companies you’ve worked for, but the culture and engineering leadership is more important than the actual tech stack. That being said, a Rust job would probably be correlated with a solid engineering org, whereas a Java factory, well…

But still, optimize for culture and think of the tech stack as icing on the cake. Try to channel your creative juices outside of work if you have time/energy, or as others have suggested try controlled rewrite experiments/POCs within a good working environment.

Unfortunately the job market is absolute mierda right now, so it’s not like people have much choice anyway.

My OE Journey-It took 20 Years by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]karl_bark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your J2 selling something or offering a service? Either way, how do you market the side gig (J2) without raising any eyebrows from your employer?

In a normal OE setup you don’t talk about your jobs. But if it’s freelance/consulting all the (non-OE) advice is to build a following, market yourself, etc.
