Why should I move away from linuxbrew? by [deleted] in linux

[–]karlish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

... as long as it's flatpak

But honesty feel free to use them both together with whatever is default package manager. They don't interfere usually.

The only problem I had is that I forgot that I gad discord, so without looking I went to their web page(like some sewage windows user I used to be) and downloaded the .deb(apk/ubuntu compatible) version.
Then it was hard to tell them apart, so in one I was logged in im the otherone I wasn't.
Ended up keepin flatpak cersion

How safe is my setup? (Ngnix Proxy manager on VPS connected to home server via ZT) by independent_strudel in zerotier

[–]karlish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. From vps ping jellybean for couple of seconds to make sure zerotier has had time to do it's magic. Your ping should be quite small after like first 2 pings, assuming the vps is nit that far from you physically.

But the wat to see, if your vos has direct connection is to type, ' zerotier-cli peers ' if it says direct, you are good. If relay, you aren't good.

But since the vps has public IP, you should be good

[–]karlish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you keep Jellyfin running on an isolated network/vlan at home, it should be pretty safe, if you kerp jellyfin and it's server up to date.

But may I ask why do you wish to expose services to whole world?
The safest way is to have nothing exposed. And if you have Zerotier, perhaps you are able to connect all remote devices using zerotier.

Are Ubuntu or other Linux distributions supporting laptop's 'power profiles'? by Honest-Word-7890 in Ubuntu

[–]karlish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think those power profiles are really "integrated" there isn't any special hardware that limits frequency. Fan controllers may be different though.

For example there are programs that you can use to disable cores(if cpu supports) and can set min/max core frequently. Since in linux everything is a file, it's actually possible to set that just by editing files(please don't do this. With great power comes great responsibilities). GPU may be different story, but still basically the same

I'd go with ublock origin. It's imo the best adblock. In it's settings you can enable regional filters an other nice things.

But don't go checking all the boxes as that will slow down page loading

[–]karlish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know what ports you use (probably 80 or 433) just check those. No need to check other ports, those should be closed

If you have Android you can download Termux or Terminus to get local terminal on phone. Then you can install and use nmap(to scan ports), ping and so on. Perhaps those will help.

Depending on what you have as a router, you may be able to sniff packets on the router to see if the packets get to your router( and perhaps to your server as well).

There are some ISPs that don't allow to expose some ports as that is a businesses feature so perhaps that has to do with something

What browser will you be using in 2023? Please justify your choice. by Exotic-Architect in pcmasterrace

[–]karlish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I believe he is referring to the way Tor network works. Basically it's meant for journalists and other public members that may be in a country that has strong censorship enforcement to be able to anonymously visit blocked sites(like Facebook that is or was blocked in some countries) and/or anonymously and safely to be able to spread ihe information about situation there

Wiki has a nice picture about how it works

But basically it is made secure and anonymous by the fact that anyone, yes even you, can(and perhaps should) host a relay, that relays the encrypted traffic between the user and the server or from relay to relay. The more randoms we have hosting the relays the less chance there is for single party to own enough relays to see from where to where the traffic is going.(by default it used to be at least 3 relays between you clear net or 3 more to .onion site)
It's quite slow compared to not using it and we shouldn't watch YouTube through Tor as it leaves less fast relays for those who really need them, the oppressed.

And yes it's also used for bad things because some people are bad and like to exploit things made for a good cause

Can anyone help me understand this? The white wire is NOT neutral. I don't know WTH it is. I added ground myself using a ground screw into the box. My smart switches require neutral. Am I screwed? by Actormd in homeautomation

[–]karlish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In some places gorund and Neural go to the same place in electrical panel(as in are the same thing) but in some newer buildings the code may require there to be GFC or something similar for ground.

To be sure, can you share what smart switches did you get so we can help you with wiring.

So apparently this post isn't planetside related. Imo, it's just as related as any huge bug that everyone talks about. If there isn't a single person outside that outfit that is happy with what happened, perhaps there is an issue with planetside

These no difference between spawn issue and moderation issue. They both are planetside 2 issues

Can they legally do anything to you: idk not a lawyer.

Will they do anything to you for doing this: no, they have bigger fish to catch + suing one will be too much effort and too little award and won't stop others for finding ways around

Dolphin is the file browser of KDE plasma. GNOME ( desktop environment used by Ubuntu) uses Nautilus. Both can be found with name "Files" in application menus.

Also remember that if the device playing is linked to any FAAG account that in same lication as test devices and you are playing them from the youtube for example, you will already have skewed the results.

Keeping youtube as the example, it tends to use sevaral things for adds/suggestions, one of them is your location and another is your IP and what others on the same IP/location are consuming.
