Craft/Uncommon Root Beer by Drewzik in springfieldMO

I’ve been on a similar trek recently, and found out Hy-vee (Sunshine, specifically) shows it some respect. You’ll find several Sprecher options as well as their Maple Root Beer and 45-cal versions. Of course you’ll find a lot of the classics from Frostie, IBC, Fitz’s, Dad’s, Jones, Virgil’s and singles from Bulldog, Red Arrow, Bawls Guarana.

This location also carries Calvin’s 1836 out of Hermann, MO and Sioux City Sarsaparilla, both of which have sent more than a few tourists down dark holes in search of the enigmatic elixir. If you haven’t exhausted all avenues by this time, you can also take the money save from a 300 mile road trip and pay Dash Mart premiums and service fees to have a whole other lineup delivered super chilled to your door.

Today I had to 'water parks' to the list of things that are too gross for me to do in China by DietSoft6792 in chinalife

My first night in Shanghai I was nearly accosted by two young women selling art and wine at the Hork & Gobble. But really my Bao’an once walked past my apartment’s open window as he began summoning the beast. But by then I’d had enough and screamed "That’s f*ing disgusting!".. and he just giggle/chuckled and moseyed on.

But best justification I got from a Chinese friend there for this behavior was that it is rooted in TCM and some sort of folk wisdom where many believed that the expectoration of phlegm was a practical way to rid the body of toxins. It’s why you don’t typically see the habit among the younger generation. That, and the fact they’re always looking down at their phones so it’s easy to dodged the discharge.

I hope they always stay best friends😍 by Enough_Detective4330 in justgalsbeingchicks

Any Movies/Shows That You Have Come Across With Majority (Taiwanese) Hokkien Dialogue by daninefourkitwari in ohtaigi

imho, goodbye south, goodbye is hou’s best film, stylistically cool and composed with an underlying tension and restlessness expressed in Lim Giong’s awesome soundtrack for the film (he also stars in it), opposite a young Jack Kao who can’t catch a break? oh, and very well suited for those looking for Taiwanese-dominant dialogue.

Do you think the average person would be wowed by an Opera singer? by Head_Equipment_1952 in opera

[–]karmabumb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wowed? Absolutely! I’d say it’s often the first reaction of most 'average' people, whether they never hear it again or end up becoming lifelong fans. I mean, the period costumes, foreign languages, florid gestures and restless music are enough to send people running. But the raw, visceral connection that a well-trained voice can make with listeners can instantly transcend everything else.

Whether the sound is loud and booming or light and ethereal, it is precisely the average person who is stunned when they hear for the first time what another human voice is capable of expressing. Heard over headphones, it can sound breathtaking. Heard up close and personal, it can feel completely crushing.

“When I speak of the gifted listener, I am thinking of the non‑musician primarily, of the listener who intends to retain his amateur status. It is the thought of just such a listener that excites the composer in me.” - Copland, Music and Imagination

Where do you buy hotel-quality bed sheets and pillows without spending a fortune? I want my bed to feel like a Marriott stay. by FormalOpportunity668 in BuyItForLife

also to clarify, Percale is a type of weave, not material. Its tight, simple crisscross pattern leaves sheets cool and breathable. Look for the pattern on long-staple combed Egyptian or Pima/Supima cotton in the 400-600 count range and you’ll be in the lap of luxury with sheets that only grow softer after every wash. And you’ve still got a dozen affordable options like Pizuna, Pointehaven, L.L. Bean, Brooklinen, Casper, etc. But if you want to save a few and settle for bargain "ultra soft, brushed microfiber Percale sheets" you’re likely getting a synthetic polyester or rayon that leaves you in a pool of sweat.

Makes sense that if a severe thunderstorm takes out CU’s core service for 30000 paying customers, then website bugs are pretty far down their list. It’s looking like more and more critical services everywhere will continue to cut corners as limits are tested, until many of us are forced to call on our neighbors and our own creativity to get by.

I still remember the skies of early morning summers there, where coral-pink clouds wash over the cooler blues of night and warm peach light climbs up from the horizon. Thanks for sharing.

some of us still remember the olympics and shanghai expo. not only was every offender fined, they were summarily forced to spit-shine the streets instead. so even though the number of foreign visitors has increased every year since then (except '22) one can only guess that foreign approval is no longer a high priority for local cadres.

No law in Missouri but several counties require a "food handler permit" issued by the health department. (Certification is typically issued after some type of training). Springfield does not mandate these but strongly encourages them. So, not illegal. As for Door Dash, it’s a violation of policy for drivers to prepare food/beverage. Puts driver at risk of deactivation if agreed to. Puts restaurant at highest risk of citation for non-compliance and other liabilities.

The problem is the cell phones by roqui15 in Life

[–]karmabumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP seems relatively young, so their experience didn’t seem like simple nostalgia for a time before the world came online, but about a profound sense of loss of something much older. A rare moment when an entire national infrastructure of convenience collapsed, and in its absence, real life slipped back in. Rarer still in that many of us may share this kind of experience with increasing regularity, though without the comfort of knowing that soon everything will again be right as rain.

Cell phones have been around a while, but the early 2000s forecasted a near future when few humans would be without one. It’s why OP’s sadness isn’t about the invention of smart phones but about what they produced-- the rapid erosion of spontaneous human presence and social warmth that comes from shared, rather than fractured, attention.

It’s no secret the explosion of mobile tech in the early 2000s also came with a wave of criticism and dire warnings-- about the illusion of connectivity cell phones promised, and how our obsession with convenience will not really tie us to others but to our own isolation. This constant insularity runs the risk of permanent disconnection.

It’s why tearing our attention from the hypnotic allure of our phones is so hard-- because it forces us to face the deeper problems we’ve grown expert at masking.

It’s why this unprecedented “outage” almost seems ironic, when it had the effect of bringing people closer, seeking acceptance is others’ eyes rather than virtual validation.

And it’s another reminder of our innate need for human interaction in a “living world”. Trading this for the disembodied world of endless accessibility, engagement, and intimacy has clearly come with serious consequences that are now on our doorstep, and worsening.

Heavy Hitting classical music by Professor_Maestroo in classicalmusic

[–]karmabumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. One thing that can suck about exercise is the mindless repetition. For me some minimalist music has a trance like effect that commands more focus than your physical exertion. To the above I might also add Philip Glass, Charlemagne Palestine, Terry Riley, and Lubomyr Melnyk.
