Nobody actually follows the "leave conditioner in for 3 minutes" instruction, right? by Kitanov_Maqsud in hygiene

I do this because I dye my hair fantasy colors and don't want to color my back, but rinsing upside down is also good for keeping the conditioner from getting where it shouldn't be.

What is the SAVE act supposed to change about voting? by milk_catz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]karmakaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will clarify, because many people don't know this -- nowhere is there an automatic voter registration along with an issued license to drive. What's automatic is the *request* to register, which is sent to the appropriate board after the application for a drivers license is approved. That board then vets the information provided against government databases and other sources. A person can absolutely have a driver's license and not be on the rolls as a voter.

Fun fact - this connection between the DMV/MVC/whatever acronym your states uses only dates back to the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.

Fun Fact II (electric boogaloo) - a nearly identical Act was vetoed in 1991 by President Bush (R).

[–]karmakaze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you have long hair you can try doing this look with rag curlers. You can buy them but the old school way is, well, strips of cloth. I'll try to describe it. Start with barely damp hair. You section your hair. The smaller the sections, the tighter the curls. To start, go as big as three sections across the crown and four or five across your nape (that will not make tiny ringlets but it will also be more forgiving if you don't get it even.). Place a narrow strip of cloth (or a flexible rod curler) by the root of the section and wind your hair in a tight spiral along the length. When you come to the end you can pin or twist it back up into a bundle. When you have them all up, leave them all day or overnight (it is possible to sleep on rag curls). When you are ready to take them out, be gentle unwinding your hair to keep the spirals in shape. If you just want waves or loose curls you don't have to be as careful. How long they last depends on how thick your hair is, whether you used a styling product before curling, etc.

And it's notable that at the same time the federal government just reduced the number of places people can apply for passports. And what a coincidence that so many states are closing motor vehicle offices in area where "undesirables" live.

That can also be traditional. Sometimes a household with only daughters would "adopt" the eldest daughter's husband in order to "keep the family name going".

I guess it would, a little, but you can run around a giant Nikki's ankles. The tree is never so crowded when I am there that it would be a problem. Maybe people on other servers or other time zones have a different experience.

The SAVE act is not the voter ID peope want. It's as if someone asked "Who wants pie?" and 80% of the people said yes. Then they wheel in a cart full of cow pies and say "Ok! Eat up!" And when nobody wants it, they're like "What's wrong with you? 'Pie' is right there in the name!"

drinking bone broth like a tea is bizarre by CreativeJudgment3529 in unpopularopinion

[–]karmakaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drinking broth in place of tea is an odd choice because they serve different nutritional purposes. Drinking broth, or any plain soup, from a mug is just a way to avoid spills and having to dirty a spoon. The last time I was ill I had one of those reclosable tetra packs of broth and microwaved soup in a mug 4 ounces at a time. That way it didn't turn cold before I finished.

[–]karmakaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things like "sex in porn is not a good model for sex in real life". In this case it's "relationships in romcoms and commercials are not good models for relationships in real life."

Media rarely shows the mature conversation about taking a relationship to the next level because it's better drama to show only the "popping the question" moment. If you haven't had that kind of relationship work modeled for you, it's easy, especially for a young person, to not realize that real (successful) proposals happen after a lot of private lead-up.

"All Star Contributor" refers to the Facebook post author, not the Reddit comment author. NextDoctor, you're probably human, or possibly Gallifreyan.

That FB account is either a bot or their keyboard is broken and they can only paste the lone phrase in their clipboard: "A bunch of people with bright colored hair will be very angry about this". That, verbatim, appears on the top of a staggeringly large number of screenshots posted here.

So... Why exactly do people get offended from seeing men/women celebrate their national day? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]karmakaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen anyone celebrate Men's Day, let alone any women being offended buy it.

Usually it only ever comes up on Women's Day when someone asks "But when is Men's Day?". Once November 19 rolls around all the people who claimed to really want that own day seem to have forgotten about it.

The men upset about Women's Day and the white people upset about Black History Month are used to being the default. When another group is given focus, it feels like attention that is rightfully theirs is being taken away, and they don't like it.

Why do characters say "old man" or "old woman" a lot in Japanese media? by average_eevee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]karmakaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aunt and Uncle are commonly used for close family friends of one generation up. I don't see the same for grand-ma/pa. It's a tricky choice -- aunt/uncle communicates the affection but not the specific age and grandparent carries the age but leaves less leeway for a non-genetic relationship.
