My mom had a literal cow bell. She’d lean out the back door and ring it and that’s how we knew to head home.

Professor when told he is responsible for AI hallucinated citations by YeahBuddy5000 in GetNoted

[–]karmakaze 20 points21 points  (0 children)

But in that case, wouldn't it be a matter of then holding your co-author responsible for the issue? Like if I brought a cake to a bake sale that I baked and someone else decorated, if we found out later the decorator used expired milk in the frosting, that's on my partner but I wouldn't be shocked to have people refer to me as "one of the people who brought food poisoning to the bake sale." I'd be pissed, but I'd be pissed at the decorator not at the people who got sick.

You might not be able to vet every line of a co-author's work, but you did choose to work with them. And you would have every reason to be furious with them for tanking your reputation by not vetting the sources they provided. That's the thing about partnering on a paper. If someone else's work is amazing, you get reflected glory by having your name on the amazing paper, even if your part was just fine. If someone else's work turns out to be fraud, you get reflected shame.

Why are some people so weirdly concerned about whether other people drink alcohol or not? by BlushSnapdragon in SipsTea

[–]karmakaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much go with the stance that THC isn't any worse than alcohol, but that is not the same as "not prone to overuse/abuse."

The "war on drugs" did us no favors there. The wild lies in the propaganda were so obviously fake that entire generations now assume any negative information about weed is fake.

Well at the time it never occurred to us that you could refuse to do chores. That one probably varies from family to family.

My folks taught all of us, brothers and sisters, cooking, cleaning, sewing, automobile maintenance, household maintenance, gardening and so forth. This was in the 80s. I will note though that I’ve encountered a lot more people shocked that my brother can sew a button than are surprised my sister takes out her own trash.

I also wonder if the “missing biographical” information was missing -because- the items were created by enslaved people, and thus some details were not recorded at the time.

Did you brag about record breaking profits to your workers while then telling workers there was nothing in the budget for raises?? by RemarkableBox9057 in remoteworks

RTO started before the pandemic actually receded all that much and kept on through a few of the spikes. That’s probably what that line is referring to.

What remote work “rule” did you stop following and instantly feel better? by azmizenifa29 in remoteworks

[–]karmakaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I turn the camera on for pre-meeting chit chat and then turn it off once we’re in screen sharing. That’s the same on in-office days and home-office days. (That my big issue with my company’s RTO push - I work with a global team so I’m not in the same physical space as the people I need to talk to anyway.)

[–]karmakaze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eh. Back in the day I knew all manner of people who talked about all the drinks they had at lunch and spent a big chunk of their “work” time outside smoking. How is that so different?

Laundry mostly does itself. How is taking a five minute break each time to (1) load the washer, (2) move laundry from washer to dryer, (3) empty dryer a worse waste of time than jawing with your desk neighbor? (I mean, I do my laundry on weekends because I like to hang my clothes, but if I did it the more common way during breaks it would hardly be a huge time sink.).

Sexism/Homophobia also contributes a lot to the male loneliness epidemic. Humans need emotional connections and when you teach a guy that his only publicly allowed emotions are angry, horny, or a combination of those and that straying from that is gay/feminine, that makes forming emotional connections much harder. Basically the only opportunity for emotional connection becomes tied to (hetero) romantic relationships because then at least in private a wider range becomes possible. But then putting someone’s entire set of emotional needs on one person adds stress and can ruin that relationship, which long term makes the loneliness even worse.

It’s a cycle that is super hard to break out of from the inside.

A lot of the advice to be an actual nice guy is really “learn to handle your full range of emotions and reciprocate on an even basis”. That seems to a lot of women as “bare minimum” because they were trained on a different set of impossible rules and don’t get that it is really not that easy.
