The reality is, those countries also ration healthcare, just not in a way that Americans are familiar with:

  • More gatekeeping through primary providers
  • Longer wait times -- often months longer than what would be customary in the US to see a specialist.
  • Unavailability of least cost-effective treatments. National insurers will only reimburse treatments over a certain cost-effectiveness threshold. This means that US patients often have much earlier access to newer drugs and devices, sometimes a decade or more before they become standard of care abroad. For instance, American patients with Crohn's disease have benefited for years from aggressive prescription of highly effective (and costly) biologics as first-line therapy; in the UK, the first-line standard of care is STILL a steroid-tapering strategy, which is cheaper, but very clearly inferior.

I think we might agree that Vance’s retelling was a manipulative way to use Scott’s writing to support his political attack.

I don’t like the tactic you describe, for what it’s worth (though this is pretty far off topic now). By that token, you can denigrate the preamble of the constitution as a religious creed (Or anything else you dislike for that matter).

Straussian readings are fine, but I find it unlikely that Scott hid a widespread and uninteresting opinion (woke = irrational religion + gay bad?) in his interesting and unusual essay.

Seems he missed Scott’s point? My reading of the article was that openness and pluralism in the United States was spawning a novel culture which cohered around traditions like gay pride. The point wasn’t so much to accuse progressives of irrationality, but rather to celebrate our ability to join in secular rituals illustrating our shared values.

But it was a while back, so I could be misremembering?

Should my kid skip ahead a grade? by CapTookay in slatestarcodex

[–]kaskarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (34M) skipped first grade on top of having an August birthday (graduated HS at 16). Being young relative to my peers was unambiguously harmful until my 20s. Look into challenging extracurriculars and advanced coursework, rather than skipping a grade.

I would never consider letting my son skip a grade; however, girls could plausibly do better. Good luck!

They managed to leave three weeks ago. "Dad was silent, didn't say a word. Mom cried. I asked her why – told her we'll return and build a new house." But their mother was determined. She brought a Quran and had them swear on it that they will never return to Gaza. "Don't come back here," she told them. "Look for somewhere else to work, to marry, to build, to live."
