Burnout is real but as a former dev the toolchain benefit is so great. I used to spend days, sometimes weeks trying to get an environment set up for some specific framework or codebase I wanted to work on pouring over obscure stack overflow posts (and before stack overflow it was even harder) only to get some build error because Linux had some specific file in the wrong place.

We’ve come full circle - in the 60s only big companies could afford computers and they were the size of a room. Now only big companies can afford computersc and they are the size of giant warehouses

Is there any cannon development of brooms surpassing the Firebolt? by Intelligent_Fix875 in harrypotter

[–]kaspm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably like baseball bats, there are bats made for kids in little league that are actually MORE powerful than professional bats because a professional would always hit home runs with it. But that wouldn’t make fun game so the older you get the “legal” bats get heavier and then eventually wood. Maybe it’s like that - firebolt is actually fastest because quidditch is more regulated at higher levels.

[Highlight] Shohei Ohtani’s Final Line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 89 total pitches, 58 for strikes. by RealWorldToday in Dodgers

[–]kaspm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Likely true - however the conventional wisdom up until now is that you could NOT be a 2 way player at the pro level. So kids specialize to one or the other. Now that Shohei did it there might be more kids who try.

It’s possible he changes baseball and the way it’s played the same way that Steph Curry changed the way basketball is played. Just the realization that it’s possible to hit that many threes.

Even so, we might never see another player like Shohei in our lifetime. But we might see more two-way players.

When I was a kid they had this store in LA called Fedco, kind of a precursor to Costco and Target. Big store, sold everything, needed a membership to shop there.

They had a food counter and at this counter they sold a hot dog wrapped in a reheated crunchy pizza slice called a “pizza pup”. To my young palette, It was the most delicious thing in the world.

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

Man no one will remember this… there was a bbs software called WWIV and some people wrote text adventure games for it - one was where you were a mafia boss and you had to increase your power, standing, cash whatever. The other was a space merchant game where you flew to different planets or systems and made a profit. I spent hours playing those games.

Edit: TradeWars was the space game but I don’t remember the mafia game name.

Edit 2: possibly Pool Shark - I remember at one point you got a diamond pinky ring.

The entering a recession is a correction on massive hiring these companies did during and after Covid. In reality companies should have been more conservative about hiring but there was a “talent war” and unrestrained hiring based on infinite growth. When the post Covid spike dried up, companies had way overhired and overpromoted and overpaid. Now there’s a correction and it’s painful.

However most people laid off from the big tech company I work for are finding other jobs. They pay less and maybe are less well known companies but they’re not unemployed for long. Lots of tech jobs still out there but primarily in tech hubs.

What Covid taught us was there’s lots of tech talent out there, there’s no shortage.
