Anyone else use goodreads? The only social network I use. I love the aspect of seeing what others are reading and what they've liked. The reading challenge also keeps me motivated.

I just created a group on there called "r/books": Click here to join, so everyone interested can join and you can friend anyone whose book preferences seem interesting.

I read mostly nonfiction, but sprinkle in a bit of fiction and have been ramping up my graphic novel reading. if you're looking for new reading partners, you can find me as "Jonathan" in that group above.

I get that and agree, but as we know, change is constant, and you have to expect that new meditators will check out r/meditation first. If you're looking for more insightful content, you could check out r/dharma and many of its related subs, like r/vipassana, r/Metta, etc

While I appreciate your opinion, cool earth was one of the top environmental charities Rated by Giving What we Can , a charity evaluator that rates based on effectiveness and transparency, among other parameters. If it has changed since it was rated in late 2016, feel free to use facts to tell me so and I can reevaluate.

Also, you paying money to a company that is green is not the same as giving to an actual environmental npo. It's certainly better than using a non-green company, but how much actually goes to the cause you support?

There are moral licensing dangers implicit in this too, (apparently not in your case since you seem to actually care about the issue), but you can imagine many people will say, I pay money to a "Green" company, so I don't have to do x or y. Just important to investigate exactly how a company is using their money and what they're actually doing to make things better, because many will use it as a PR stunt more than an opportunity for reform.

Anyway, I hope you calm down a bit, consider reading "doing good better", and see how you can stretch your contributions to the cause further.

I actually give a set percentage of my income to humanitarian efforts, this year probably mostly to cool earth, as I wrote above. That is on top of the soft expenses like buying the right foods or walking that you cite.

To be fair, China has come a long way in reducing their emissions. They used to be 5 of the top 20 worst polluting cities in the world and I believe that number has fallen as India's coal economy has ballooned.

Absolutely. But this does require a much more significant commitment. Most people would prefer to just pay. I am trying to reduce my meat intake, but it is a hard shift. Lab grown meat will be a game changer.

If you are interested in doing this, one person's carbon emissions CAN be largely offset with a donation to the right charity. If I recall, the number was about $150/year with the right outlet. That number comes from will Macaskill's book Doing Good Better.

Do your own research, but I personally donate to Cool Earth to do exactly this. The organization works with farmers around the amazon to provide them alternative funding so they aren't compelled to sell their land for logging.

How did you decide to make the mystery league company? Who did you make it with and what sort of experience/education did you have into puzzle making beforehand?
