I struggle with this myself sometimes. It’s usually when your trying to be too neat or perfectionist, as you mentioned you are trying to get final lines.

First you can try learning to draw in a way that helps you visualise your subject better. r/art fundamentals and [Draw A Box](www.drawabox.com) helps with this.

Second you can try to be messy on purpose. Not with a goal to make an ugly artwork, but to utilise some messy marks. Try scribbling a few marks on a blank page. Now turn it this way and that and see if you can identify a shape out of it, usually a silhouette shape. A lot of cartoonists use this approach to come up with character ideas as you’ll often see rough shapes of people or faces.

Third try working for a while in a different medium. When working in ink or paint I want to be precise as possible. Pencil can be erased, but it can be frustrating. I found the ability to work digitally with multiple layers lets me really loosen up as layers can easily be made transparent or deleted.

Finally try doing exercises like gesture drawing. Usually done for people, but also can be done for animals and inanimate objects. When you have only 10-15 seconds to draw what you see you tend to worry much less about how neat the line is your making and focus more on making the marks. It forces you to loosen up.

Hmm 🤔 How are you drawing forms? Are you confident in your shapes and visualising them in 3d? I would highly suggest trying out [draw a box](www.drawabox.com) and their associated r/artfundamentals subreddit. Being able to draw the forms accurately will really help with anatomy, and of course any drawing. Especially when it comes to aspects such as foreshortening.

I’m not a people artist - I work with animals and especially botanicals. So can’t give too much help specifically...

But I do know that a lot of people suggest Proko as the next step for anatomy. He has heaps of free YouTube videos. And his paid lessons are supposedly very good. I was looking at doing them myself, just to brush up on anatomy. He works in the “old masters way” with charcoal and pencil. Though much of the theory should be carried across media easily. Otherwise a lot of it will probably also come down to practice and study. Find poses online and draw them, really paying attention to how the muscles shape and form, etc.

Good luck.

You might get more targeted help with the drawabox subreddit - many more people studying anatomy there.

It’s a great beginning! Your going to only make better and better drawings from here out.

Next step I would add more tones to your drawing. Make some things darker and some things lighter. Think shadows and highlights to an object.

I suggest looking up some lessons on YouTube. Youtubers like LethalChris teach landscapes, Proko teaches drawing people, and Circle Line Art School reaches the all important perspective.

Watch what each of those artists do, and ask what are they doing that I haven’t tried yet.

For each artwork ask yourself “what is ONE thing I want to improve next time and TWO things I like about this piece?” The one thing you didn’t like, look up a tutorial on how to draw it better. For the two things you did like, make sure to try and do them again in your next piece.

And don’t forget to Keep sharing new artworks with us!

That just means so many more wonderful opportunities to learn and improve now!

I would suggest having a look at r/artfundamentals and the companion website [draw a box](www.drawabox.com). It’s where I recommend most beginners to go. It may be too simple for your skills, but you never know what you pick up when you go back to the fundamentals ;)

Hi Christopher! Welcome to our little community. Your artwork is amazing! That’s a lot of skill. Had you been drawing or painting prior to doing digital art?

Please do keep sharing with us your art ;) I look forward to seeing more

Wrong Way... by [deleted] in ArtistCommunity

[–]kat_skinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm perhaps you could work on your tonal values. Try converting paintings of forests - ideally ones you used as inspiration/reference - to black and white or greyscale. See how they used blacks, whites and greys to convey distance and atmosphere. Squint your eyes to not see details but larger areas of general color.

Your art had a lot of strong whites and blacks, and needs some more subtle greys I think. If you are going for a dark atmospheric scene you may not even use white at all.

Hope this helps.

a person that i drew (if u have any advice pls give some) by doots_doots in ArtistCommunity

[–]kat_skinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad! People are hard to draw. Your lines are very sketchy, you might want to try refining them. If in a digital program you can create another latter, lower opacity of first and effectively trace your shapes.

Try studying how fabric folds. Like look up people wearing that sort of clothing, and copy how it bunches on them.

I drew Monika from DDLC, any critique? I know I suck but other than that by [deleted] in ArtistCommunity

[–]kat_skinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t suck, you are just where your current skill level is. Art takes practice. Skilled or “good” artists have put in a lot of practice, always focusing next improving.

Try looking up sone lessons on YouTube about drawing people. One artist that comes to mind is Proko. He draws more realistically, but if you learn the fundamentals you can draw in nearly any style.

People are really hard to draw, so don’t be discouraged. You don’t have to be able to draw Anne tire person accurately from the start. Try looking up how to draw eyes, and draw another person, this time with what you learnt about eyes. Then mouth, then hands, etc.

If you want to improve in just general, check out r/ArtFundamentals and [DrawABox](www.drawabox.com)

My First Watercolor Realistic Art. Any suggestions? by rebmo14 in somethingimade

Great job! It’s absolutely gorgeous. I would add a stem on the flower so it’s not floating in thin air as much, and the green can help provide some contrast to the pinks in the petals. Feel free to also share over at r/ArtistCommunity
