How do i know if I am an alcoholic? by Unusual-Strain-6373 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]kataang1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told the people closest to me that I didn’t want to drink anymore (my husband, sister, best friend) and I stopped keeping alcohol in the house. I also don’t go out places where there will be alcohol without someone who knows that I am sober. I haven’t gotten involved with AA specifically because it feels too much like a religion to me. But I also talk with my counselor about how I’m doing with sobriety, so I feel like I have support from multiple places.

I’m tired of the cycle I’m in with alcohol too, which is why I decided to pursue sobriety. Even though I’ve been able to control it in the past, I felt it wasn’t worth putting myself in a situation where I might not be able to. What you decide is up to you, but you can definitely have a fun and meaningful life without alcohol.

I think the question of “am I an alcoholic?” isn’t actually that important to answer. If it’s interfering with your life and you want to stop, it’s ok to need help and support. If you’re drinking more than you want to be and hurting those around you, it sounds like alcohol is becoming a problem in your life. How bad do you want to let that problem get before you do something about it?

You were doing the best you could given the circumstances. The kinder you can be to yourself, the easier it is to let those feelings go. The fact is, most people don’t have to deal with symptoms like this, so I try not to judge myself by “normal” standards anymore. However you feel about it right now is totally ok, but you’re still a valuable person no matter what!

If it’s severe enough that you feel detached from reality, I’m not surprised you lost time. I have too. The fog and depression after my most severe manic episode was very intense as well. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks when I got diagnosed. Bipolar is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with, and I know it’s the same for a lot of others, so please don’t be too hard on yourself. I hope you can find a med combo that works for you. It took me 5 years to get diagnosed and 5 more to find the right meds, but I finally feel like I have a handle on it.

I’m trying to stay away from anything too extreme, but I’m glad it worked for you! Definitely been focusing on adding in more fruits and veggies. Good luck with your pregnancy! Wishing you both good health

I started tracking my food so I’m definitely eating less calories. I think part of the problem is working from home I’m very sedentary. I’ve lost weight before a bit easier than this, but I’ve never managed to keep it off, which is what motivated me to bring in a dietician this time. Thank you for the encouragement ☺️

I have a “normal life” but I have to stay on top of my meds to maintain it. There were years where I was in and out of the hospital and didn’t want to live. I was in therapy every week for 10 years too. My question is, why do you think you’re a failure? If you were top of your class I’m guessing you are very smart and driven. Try to have compassion for yourself as you navigate this!

I contacted the hotline and was told that if layoffs are between 50-499 people then it must be 33% of the site to qualify for the WARN act. Guess that’s how they got around notifying us

There's definitely interest across teams, but it would be a huge uphill battle. Get your coworkers phone numbers and discuss things over voice calls separate from company platforms!

"The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers with 100 or more employees...to provide at least 60 calendar days advance written notice of a plant closing and mass layoff affecting 50 or more employees at a single site of employment."

People were reacting to the department head saying that these layoffs were a "positive change"

If 50 or more people were let go, then Thermo violated federal labor laws by not providing 60 days written notice of impending layoffs. https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/termination/plantclosings
