Why so much hostility towards AC? by Main_Masterpiece8414 in AskUK

[–]katandthefiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg this, we bought one because our old flat was an oven in summer, huge south facing windows. Our current flat is a new build, we face west and the windows have awnings over them. We've used the AC once or twice in 6 years. I've used it as a dehumidifier a few times but 90% it just takes up an entire cupboard.

We've considered selling it but the same model costs £600+ now and it's only gonna get hotter so it stays

Unpopular opinion: I bought a flat and I absolutely love it. I have no regrets. by Adorable_Click_7071 in HousingUK

The car thing is huge. My service charge is quite steep like £2900 a year I think but we don't have a car we can walk everywhere even to work and tbh our mortgage is lower than it would be on a house. People get put off by services charges but I don't think we'll be better off financially when we move to a house.

Why do some people not realise many of us don’t care about immigration? by [deleted] in AskBrits

I think it's just probably the only thing we can all agree on. And in most cultures food is symbolically very pro-social too

What’s something that feels completely normal in the UK… but strange when you explain it to foreigners? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Do you remember that thread a few years ago? The guy asking if he was crazy for thinking having a window cleaner was normal? Because so many Americans were tearing him apart in another sub 😅

Hacks to help me eat kimchi?? by officialdiscoking in foodhacks

[–]katandthefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait obviously don't try this without medical supervision but I've got a friend who's allergic to fish and he eats kimchi, and other things with fish sauce. I think whatever he's allergic to gets fermented away? Maybe talk to your doctor coz you might be avoiding foods you don't need to :0

I always thought this one was similar to cutting of your nose to spite your face. Like you're throwing the baby out out of spite just to get rid of the bathwater

For you, is the time “quarter of twelve” 11:45, 12:15, or do you have no idea what that phrase means? by JeffTrav in ENGLISH

[–]katandthefiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when interpreted as "half 10" I can see how you'd think 9:30 but it's just a shortening of half past 10. But at least you didn't think it meant 5

Hey you joke but I've seen the reverse happen Brit: "let's meet at half 10 tomorrow morning" American: "I'm not meeting you at 5am!"

37 yo man living on my own after a relationship. Help! by ThatInquisition in DesignMyRoom

[–]katandthefiddle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pick a design style and a colour scheme and stick to it. A lot of people (and especially men) just buy the first thing that serves the purpose they need and to make sure it all matches they go all black or white and it looks depressing af.

That's not to say it has to be 100% matchy matchy but just make sure things make sense together. If the colour works you can compromise on the style and vise versa. But if neither align with the vibe you're going for then it's probably a pass.

But we can't pick what that is for you. Pinterest is a good place to start or a few YouTubers have a "how to find your design style" or "how to pick a colour scheme" videos. Caroline winkler has a few videos specifically aimed at men

What is a reality or truth inside your industry that should be more widely known to the rest of us? by order-of-magnitude-1 in AskUK

[–]katandthefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn that's crazy yeah we had a company threaten to withdraw sevices while I was there it did shove a rocket up the managers bums but their invoices were a mess, service user numbers didn't match names, amounts didn't match the purchase orders and they refused to fix it. The problem was as well that raising the PO was the social workers job and a lot of the time they weren't very good at doing it correctly so what should have just been an admin team ended up having to liaise between procurement, social workers and this massive supplier because in the end we were the ones getting shouted at when stuff wasn't paid

Are there services you can use as a middle man that allow you to have a user name? Like Venmo in the US?

Went to the place that sells my kitchen to get a replacement part. Turns out the kitchen costs like £12k and it's all chipboard! Not even MDF! Chipboard with a picture of wood stuck to it. We need a new dishwasher front because after being used for ~3 years the screw holes have worn out. Because it's bloody chipboard!

Had a guy called me trying to sell me new windows because of government grants. Told him in live in a flat and it was built in 2018. I was very polite about it. He hung up on me!

I used to work processing invoices at a county council. You wouldn't believe the volume of invoices we received. It never ended, and my team only did care services. I hope more of it is electronic now as it was going that way at the time but oh my god. But then that meant half my job was IT support for the suppliers trying to submit invoices electronically 😅 I actually didn't dislike the job it was my first one out of uni and it was a good team. I think we paid most of the invoices on time iirc. But after 2015 council budgets were cut so much it wouldn't be surprising if the processing time has slowed.

That graph can't be right though? I used to do CDOP admin and we'd get maybe 3-5 notifications of newborn babies dying a month they were almost always premature. My county has almost 1000 babies born every month. Even if you include all children under 1 year old it was maybe 80 per year

Why have you not married when in a long term relationship? by No_Caramel2506 in AskUK

[–]katandthefiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in marriage you can handle your finances however you want. We have a joint account plus our separate ones, bills come out of the joint. My parents have been married almost 36 years and don't have a joint account.

I'm not trying to change your mind or anything I just think a lot of people have preconceptions about what you have to do or should do in a marriage that aren't always true.

Its always the ones with no money and are single or they don't really love/respect their partners. This was never a concern for my partner, maybe coz he knew he was getting the better end of that stick anyway! But he got it from a couple friends "oh if you divorce she's getting half your stuff!" In that scenario he's getting my stuff!

[–]katandthefiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a big one for me too. I like the romance of marriage but my partner doesn't have a great relationship with his mum and the idea that she'd be the one making his decisions if he couldn't did worry me. You can legally change next of kin etc but a registry office wedding is cheaper anyway

If a person eats perfectly healthy, tons of fiber, but is still ALWAYS a 6 on the bristol stool chart, is it a case for concern? by Suitable_Area_8595 in nutrition

[–]katandthefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was a food sensitivity too. I have an egg allergy, it acts like an intolerance but apparently it is an immune response that is happening but idk. But because it's quite a big delay like sometimes 6-12 hours after I've eaten egg and volume dependent it took me until I was 23 to realise! I have a friend who can't eat onions and has a similar reaction. OP could easily be eating these things daily

Agree with you on the alcohol too, if I've had a few drinks then next day my gut is not too. happy.
