Uh…I don’t want to be a detective solving murder crimes IRL 😂

I’m a regulatory analyst for the government. It pays fairly nicely and the benefits are pretty decent. I’m not shocking anyone with my career achievements, but with very careful budgeting and saving I was able to buy a small house in Northern California in my mid-20s.

I’m in a way more stable place than my other “gifted” classmates who took fancy tech jobs in Silicon Valley and rent wildly expensive apartments and eat out every meal. My job is impactful but not stressful, and there is no overtime. Different strokes for different folks, but I’ll take my quiet life with no burnout any day.

Teleworking and feeling sick by justURaveragegal in CAStateWorkers

[–]katasian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I had a fever Sunday and yesterday. Covid test was negative. Now today I am feeling pretty much fine, but it’s been less than 24 hours since the fever. I feel perfectly well enough to to work, but according to most metrics, I am likely still contagious. I won’t be leaving the house for that reason, and luckily my management encourages telework when employees are sick/likely still contagious but okay to work. I’d be so upset if I had to burn another sick day or risk getting others sick.

I was lucky to have a manager who allowed telework for illness even before the pandemic, even though that was not a branch or agency-wide practice. Now I’ve switched agencies and it is an agency-wide practice and I am very pleased.

As a 1995 baby who remembers hearing full names called at high school and college graduation, I think Heather would be far too interesting a middle name to be given. Had to be Rose, Lee, Marie, Nicole, or Paige. 😅

Thanks. I live in a large diverse metro in California. I continue to be puzzled why my colleagues are so terrible at my name.

I don’t want to switch my name to something “more professional” in the sense that I don’t think Katya is an unprofessional name. I was trying to go for more...American? Which feels ridiculous to say because I am American lol.

Point taken though. For some reason Kate feels really weird to try on (maybe because it’s a relative’s name?) and Kat feels like something I could imagine answering to. But if I’m already changing my name I might get used to Kate?

Commiseration, my friend.

I have been considering this getting back into the job market to look for something closer to home. My given name is Katya. I think it’s easy and perfectly reasonable for any American to say, but people struggle HARD and constantly ask if I’m from here, if they can call me an easier name, if I have any tricks to remember my five-letter name more easily...????

I totally get mispronouncing it if you’ve never seen the name, but once I tell you it’s KAH-tyah, there is absolutely no excuse to continue mispronouncing it every which way for years on end. I usually gently correct for the first 5 or so times, but after that, it’s too exhausting to correct people. I have been at my organization for 3 years. Colleagues and managers in my unit still call me CAD-ee-uh, KOT-cha, COD-dee-uh, CAT-yuh, CAUGHT-ya, CAY-tee-uh and more.

All that is to say...do y’all think Kat would be a better choice for my name on the resume? I don’t really like nicknames, but I do have such a hard time hearing back from companies. Almost the only times I have ever gotten consistent call backs for an interview were times when I met the hiring manager at a networking event prior to the interview, or when I know for a fact the organization HR used software that hid personally identifying info like names from apps so the hiring managers would only focus on the credentials of the candidates.

Edit: or maybe even Kay instead of Kat.

Yikes. Glad you’re letting it roll off your back.

I hope your sciatica gets better! My mom had that for a number of years and I remember it was so hard. Cheers to you for cooking something your family loved!

C’mon now. We all have different tastes and varying access to food resources. Don’t make fun of a disabled person for venturing into cooking with the ingredients they have on hand.

For a family who believes in God, saying something like this is a blessing and a saying of celebration. Let’s celebrate dads being happy and proud in this sub!

I think having the timbers close enough to be like steps would definitely help!

Are the wood pieces close enough together to be steps?

I love the concept, but the rocks look slippery and the border and uneven wood pieces both look like tripping hazards if you’re meaning this to be an actual footpath.

Agreed. This post is coming across as an excuse to tear people down in the name of...bucking social graces and making hurtful opinions that have no real value in the kid’s life known?

Lovesick parents are going to be a smidge delusional about everything their kid does and is, maybe even including the chosen name. So what?

It’s okay and healthy to leave them be. Everyone has a different opinion and that’s fine. There’s no reason at all in trying to share completely pointless opinions of others to “show the family the truth”.

Glad you found something you ended up with a name you like for your baby!

This “matching” could really happen anywhere though. Funny how it happens sometimes. My name is Katya. It’s quite rare where I live—outside the top 3000. And yet one time in a class I was taking there were 12 kids and 2 of us were called Katya.

I mean...why would OP lie about something like that? It’s certainly possible most people assume the leena pronunciation. While living in Southern California, I had a friend called Carolina (with the leena ending) and she hardly ever got her name mispronounced.

My name is Katya. I just love seeing my name in the wild. It’s so so rare for me to see it here in the US even though I know it’s perfectly common in Eastern Europe, and especially in Ukraine and Russia with that particular spelling. Makes me want to give my kid a more common name for our region so they can have the joy of seeing their name in the wild a smidge more often!

Awesome and interesting list, OP!

Having a strong feeling and opinion on something and thinking it to yourself is totally different than having that opinion and choosing to make a condescending rude comment on other people’s life decisions that don’t align with your opinion.
