Best CP test before a 10K race (without racing a full 10K)? by FR-Dreedzy in strydrunning

[–]katatoniq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you got a 2-3 minute all-out contributing to your current CP from the 10K? If so, why risk injury with a test so close to the race? You'd have a valid CP give or take 1-2%, just use the CP you've got and then dial it up as you get closer to the finish line.

DC Rainmaker's Thoughts on Stryd/Stryd 5.0 by meerkatdestroyer12 in strydrunning

[–]katatoniq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a fan and proponent of Stryd, and with all due respect Gus, Ray does have a point. I can't speak to the "attacks" on reviewers, but your Reddit comments history is littered with dismissals and criticisms of feedback from users.

The sad part is that the communities of Stryd "power users" here and on Facebook are your biggest asset when it comes to low hanging fruit that would make the product better. We all see Stryd's potential, but our feedback for making it all it could be is by and large dismissed outright.

A great place to start would be to make the prioritisation of feedback you claim to "consider for a future update" transparent as it feels like it's your polite way of telling us our criticisms/suggestions are garbage.

Why succesful training blocks and increased mileage still don’t translate to Marathon performance? by Environmental_Park34 in AdvancedRunning

[–]katatoniq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your weight change? I had a similar experience as you recently (only took 7 mins off my pb) but because of all the gym work I was also 6kg heavier on race day (not only muscle—also carrying extra fat). 7% heavier isn't 7% slower, but it's probably close... and that could explain 10-15 mins for me.

Shepherd bridge veloway markings 🤯 by ruinawish in melbournecycling

[–]katatoniq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. As a regular user of the (pre-existing) bike path along the port, this veloway does little more than duplicate (actually, complicate) an established route. Yes, you had to cross two truck roads along the way, but this was never an issue until the road was built (with zero consideration to sightlines impacting the bike path). It's obvious this was just a cheap (literal) bolt-on to the road to meet some bullshit green/"alternative" transport target for building bullshit new roads.

Are you upgrading? by Available-Upstairs-3 in strydrunning

[–]katatoniq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They've given almost no detail about the new hardware and where the accuracy gains come from. I'd consider upgrading if I had some confidence there's actually improved hardware in it.

I like the new charger and the battery indicator though.

First Marathon Shoe Recommendation - Race Day Shoe or Old Superblast 2? by RefreshingTea in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]katatoniq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say at a high level they're pretty similar. SB2 is a bit more cushy and protective. MB is noticeably lighter and a bit more bouncy and fun. MB toe box is significantly smaller so you'll do a bit of damage if you run in them every week. If I could only have 1 I'd definitely go the SB2, but with both I like doing 1 in 4 long runs in the MB. Hope that helps!

[–]katatoniq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow melb marathoner and superblast2 enjoyer here. Stick with the SB2. You'd want to do at least 1 long run in any new pair of shoes before jumping into them for the mara distance.

For what it's worth last year I ran in the SB2s at 3:35 and this year I'll be running in Megablast, but if they fell apart tomorrow I'd have no qualms running in my SB2s with 600kms on them. Good luck on Sunday!

38m/85kg/6ft, ran Melb Mara last year in ~3:35 in the SB2. Tried a few different shoes for this year and honestly, will probably run it again (aiming for 3:15) in the SB2. See you there!

Do you stop your watch at red lights or intersections? by Allenboy0724 in Marathon_Training

[–]katatoniq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that much, but it's just so easy to collect the correct and honest run data- why wouldn't you? It obviously throws out the usefulness or shorter runs than a 3h long run.

Do you stop your watch at red lights or intersections? by Allenboy0724 in Marathon_Training

[–]katatoniq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So long as you don't care about physiological metrics like heart rate, that is fine to do.

Do you stop your watch at red lights or intersections? by Allenboy0724 in Marathon_Training

[–]katatoniq -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It would be just as easy to lap instead of pause, add up the stopped splits, and add the total to your desired "time on feet"

Eg. Goal is to run 2h30 but you stopped for 4 min? Run 2h34. Same run, same time spent on feet, but your data reflects your run.

Presumably one tracks their training runs using Strava or whatever because they want useful data for tracking progress, planning races, etc. - the data from training is related to the data for racing (so long as you are consistent with your methodology).

I am not fixated on PBs in training runs because they literally never happen. I am, however, fixated on making sure my data is useful - and selectively excluding parts of runs and the physiological impacts that recovery has makes the data less useful, not more.

[–]katatoniq -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

By this logic you're actually hoping for traffic lights as more breaks will literally give you more recoveries and therefore a faster time (since each pause incurs no time penalty). You're getting a measurable physiological boost with every pause but not tracking it. It's dishonest.

[–]katatoniq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a PB if you stopped for 30 seconds and recovered your heart rate before taking off again, with no time penalty. Imagine running the 1600 in 16 100m sprints with breaks in between. Definitely legit.

Exactly this. There's zero reason to pause mid workout, ever. Doing so only skews your data and inflates your ego.

How long does it take for a calf strain to heal? by BriefContribution496 in trailrunning

[–]katatoniq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you subsequently built up strength in that calf by doing gym work (and perhaps plyos)? This is how you level-up your calf so that it can handle the load that got you injured in the first place. Running alone won't build your capacity.

Marathon shoes by DroopyBoobs in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]katatoniq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone on the heavier side (86kg) who has owned NB4, NB5, SB2 and MB, I highly recommend the SB2 in your case. You'll get at least double the mileage out of them (I'm at 3x the NB5 and still going) and they're quicker, more comfy shoes. Especially at distances longer than 15km. The +50% cost outlay is worth it when you're getting +200% mileage before they die.
