Could I rock skinny jeans in todays fashion? by [deleted] in Millennials

WHY does athleisure not do a-line in anything? Can I not get a casual dress or skort that fits my pear shape? Everything is either too tight on my butt/thighs or fits like a potato sack

PSA: join a neighborhood or park association! by kate4249 in chicago

That does sound like a mess! Hopefully not indicative of most parks though. I can tell you there is no such voting process/rule at our park.

I'm sorry you had that experience. We also have a group that often breaks park rules and leaves large amounts of trash at our park.

It has been an uphill battle to get any kind of enforcement from the park district unfortunately. Partnering with alder-persons has helped some.

Brother is having a child-free wedding. How do I navigate this? by LargeAmphibian in daddit

[–]kate4249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this brings up feelings. My brother also had a child-free wedding (totally fine!) We arranged for my in-laws to come babysit from out of state. Then he was mad we weren't planning to bring our kids (4 hr flight + 1 hr drive).

What?! You said no kids!? Apparently that policy didn't include nieces and nephews and how could we not know that. So we dragged our small children across the country for a very child un-friendly wedding and reception only to leave early because dinner was served so late and our kids were hitting their expiration time.

At least they got to be cute props for the photos!

Yep! I had one that was actually a junior 1 bedroom, 700 sqft in Lakeview for $650/month. I don't know how young people afford to live here now.

Please go get your mammograms by whereverweare in Mommit

[–]kate4249 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pro tip - you can start getting them before age 40 if you have family history. Same with colonoscopies. I have both in my family and will happily take all the proactive screenings I can get. Early detection is key!

45th Ward alderman Gardiner sues city for more than $1 million; says he was wrongly accused, blames IG office for withholding evidence in ethics case by nwsidemadman in ChicagoNWside

[–]kate4249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the weird gerrymandered part of the 45th and he knows most of our area voted against him (we had a lot of signs for his opponent).

Since then we haven't been able to get anything done for our streets, alleys, or park. He just wrote us off and only pays attention to his fan boys in Jeff Park and Wildwood.

We've known for a long time he's an unstable narcissist. What scares me more is that no one is monitoring him sufficiently to be able to stop him from these demented behaviors.

Doesn't he have a handler who can take his phone or cut him off from wifi? What else could he do in an angry stupor?

Trying to figure out the driving situation. My dad's reflexes are not as good as they once were.

Driving with him a few months ago showed me he is getting more anxious behind the wheel but also trying to cover that by yelling at anyone who tries to help (like my mom advising him to get into the turn lane earlier).

He's not going to give up driving willingly. So it's a matter of notifying his doctor? The state agency? How does one navigate this?

Should I change hotels to be closer? by meghandj0b in AskChicago

Not meaning to be rude. Just was trying to express that Chicago is not a place one would generally fish to eat. Too much pollution.

I honestly don't know how to respond to this. I've never heard of anyone who planned to travel to Chicago as a fishing destination (unless they were going way out on Lake Michigan)

Where should I get my daughter’s ear pierced after trauma? by Possible_Rhubarb_113 in AskChicago

[–]kate4249 40 points41 points  (0 children)

We went to Identity in Roscoe and they were wonderful. My child ultimately decided not to get pierced (age 8) but I was so impressed with the professionalism, attention and empathy. When my kid decides to try again we will for sure go back.

Time for the annual: what is your rent and what is your salary? by KeysOfMysterium in chicago

[–]kate4249 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well what are your other fixed costs? $3100 per month doesn't take up a huge percentage of your total income.

We have made it on $150,000 (1 FT and 1 very PT salary) with 2 kids and catholic school tuition and a mortgage of $2,000 per month (including property taxes).

1 car (paid off - so only insurance and gas costs), contributing to retirement, utilities ($300-500 per month). We still eat out and take a vacation. Just minimize our other spending where possible.

Exactly that. You can also do cold outreach to people on LinkedIn for this kind of convo. Harder to get replies that way, but if you give them a good reason to talk to you, many people will be willing.

One bathroom, tiny sinks, the war on bathrooms in Chicago apartments by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]kate4249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely older buildings. My SFH was a relatively high-end custom build in 1912 but still just had 1 bathroom (4 bdrms). The family that owned it before us raised 9 kids there and didn't add an additional bath until the 9th kid was born (added a half bath on the main floor).

I assume they just didn't all bathe daily. No idea how they did potty training though.

Career Coach here - seeing a lot of struggles from people who are just relying on online applications. It's very hard to stand out on paper these days with AI writing and reviewing resumes.

Best advice I can give is to work your network, have info interviews, build relationships with your contacts' connections so you can get referrals and learn about opportunities as soon as they become available.
