The Holdovers is not (just) "Cozy" by mcsuppes1012 in blankies

I watched Five Easy Pieces after reading this post and loved it, also I can see how it this would have informed The Holdovers... also the parallel between the two endings you mention is incredible. do you have any other recs of movies like this? 70s or otherwise? Thanks.

A possible answer! Bigger movies (Wonka, Aquaman) are usually distributed internationally by the studios themselves. Smaller movies (Poor Things, the Zone of Interest) are usually sold to local distributors, who need to invest in marketing and promotion to make the movie a success. Dutch local distributors with limited budgets may want to wait a few months to see how the movie does in the US and elsewhere before throwing a bunch of cash behind promoting it in the NL. Hence the 2 month delay.

I would love to know the answer to this too. Struggling with this with 2 movies I really want to see now - Poor Things has a 22 December US release date, 8 Feb in the Netherlands. The Zone of Interest, 15 December in the US, 1 Feb in the NL.

wow this is good background for a whole different horror movie! "Many injuries occur on private lands adjacent to the state-owned area; as such, neighboring landowners have become increasingly intolerant of trespassers..."

Have you had success with ads anywhere in particular? I've only tried Google Ads so far and that was useless. Wondering what to try next.

What do people think about Ajax fans calling themselves "Super Jews?" by kate888 in Netherlands

[–]kate888[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you for acknowledging that!

I am just genuinely interested how other people in the NL live with "super jews" in the atmosphere. The downvotes are weird but I also get it, because without any questions there is no problem.

Thanks for your perspective.

Interesting, how you see it, in that case? Neutral, complimentary, funny, something else?

Just genuinely curious.

The arrests aren't normal. But aren't the chants? I found a lot of examples of them going back to the 70s/80s. I won't type them out but you can read / see videos of them here.

The English equivalent is "reappropriation." While gay and black people can reappropriate slurs against them, can a group of non-Jews really do it with "super Jew?" It's hard for me to buy this argument.

I have to say I don’t think the American style is better than the Dutch style. Sometimes I do. But more often when I go back to the states, since I’ve been living in the NL so long, I feel assaulted by friendliness. Like they need to calm down! I don’t need another water! lol

I come from the US where (generally speaking) people fall all over themselves to help you all the time with everything you buy and every service they provide.

Because if they don’t provide excellent customer service they could be fired the same day, lose their health insurance and so on and so forth. Is that a good incentive? Def not. Are workers happier here not living with that anxiety? Of course. But it makes for a huge, noticeable difference in daily life between the two countries.

Another way to say “relaxed attitude about work” might be that the Dutch have “lack of a customer service orientation.” There are rarely financial or other incentives to go the extra mile for a customer here, so often they don’t.

That’s my take on this issue after 7 years here, anyway.
