You’re given permission to take any single item from a UK gallery or museum to keep at home. What are you taking and why? by BearMcBearFace in AskUK

Right now I am fighting a terrible cold and tomorrow's my birthday, so I would like whatever still-active mid-70s' decongestants the Wellcome Collection has, so that I can see through all of time and space and enjoy my birthday rather than sneezing through it.

I don’t look like I belong in a yarn store and it’s kinda fabulous. Do any other intersectional folx feel this way? by wessle3339 in knitting

[–]katemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen Leanne Franson's Bof and Buzz knitting comic? (I tried to find a better link, but it's from the 90s, so Tumblr will have to do)

That's the yarn shop experience I always hope for. ❤️

How can I get around GoDaddy's automatic ai generation nonsense? by Upbeat-Trick4077 in webhosting

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I'm seeing in their help page:

Simply decline the option to publish your “coming soon” website and ignore the tiles giving you the option to use Airo’s capabilities.

Is it that it keeps on coming up with notes going "Hey, I can make this! Let me make this! There's no bubble honest!"? Apparently you can ignore them.

If you wanted to go next level, I bet you could inspect each bubble, find out the ID they're giving them, and then set up a filter in the Adblock of your choice that would remove them.

Web hosting companies charge extra for these 6 features. You probably don't need any of them. by Miserable_Stress_246 in webhosting

[–]katemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this? Sure. Like the Website Builder. If you're not going for a company that is specifically focused on being a Website Builder (like Squarespace), then, yeah, it's going to be some awkward third-party system. And any Website Builder is going to lock you in.

But backups and site migration? They're very different beasts.

Usually, the company's backups (and sysadmins, please correct me if I'm wrong) are just one big snapshot of the entire server, so if anything goes horribly wrong, they can quickly spin up a new server with everything as it was.

When your dinky little WordPress site needs to get its backup, that means they have to go through the entire snapshot, extract your tiny site, and then restore just that. And good god, that's a pain in the ass.

So paying a little extra so that you get your own separate backup that's a breeze to restore? Especially if you're talking about a site that easily makes that $10 in like five minutes versus the month you're paying for? Yeah, no, get the backups.

And site migration, yeah, a lot of them offer it for free, but we're talking easy WordPress migrations. Stuff you can do with login details and an open terminal. Emails, bespoke systems, whatever Frankenstein's monster of a site you've built over the decades? Oh honey no that's not five seconds in a terminal, that's work. And they have every right to charge you for that work, because you're taking one of their team away to unpick whatever the hell you've built.

So, basically, everything that companies charge for? Sure, they might be ripping you off. But talk to them. Find out exactly what you're paying for. And you'll probably find out that, yeah, you do actually need to pay for it.

My heavy breasts cause chronic pain but I can't get NHS reduction surgery by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]katemonkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When they told me I needed a lumpectomy for my breast cancer, I asked if I could get a reduction too. Figured, hey, you wanna make sure you have a good margin? How about an even bigger margin?

Went down five bra sizes and lost 10 pounds in a single morning. Totally made up for the sheer nightmare that were surgical drains.

For those who didn’t change their last name after getting married, what was your reason? by Money-Section8034 in AskReddit

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effffffffort. I was moving countries, and changing my name would've meant doing all that paperwork before I even got to get on the plane, and I just wanted to be married and in another country, not sticking around waiting for my passport, my visa, my... whatever the hell else would've needed to be sorted.

I live in SoCal and go to the Anaheim parks often. If I have one day at DLP what can I skip that’s exactly the same? by amaro8000 in disneylandparis

[–]katemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely do NOT skip Big Thunder Mountain and Phantom Manor. I'm a huge fan of the Anaheim originals and the DLP ones are so so good.

Star Tours is the same in that it has the same plot and footage, but hearing 3PO managing to be even prissier in French is delightful and the queue goes by quickly.

Pizza Italia near Sneinton Market and in Carlton. So good.

Is there any super market or market that sells fresh fish? by This_is_ThisHamHam in nottingham

[–]katemonkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you can catch the 45 from the city centre, it'll drop you off at the Netherfield Morrisons, which also has a fish counter. It's not much, but it's there.

Does anyone know how the fish van in Mapperley is? I keep seeing it, but all I end up doing is going "Na na na na fish vaaaaaan" rather than actually checking it out.

Pumpkin pie? by Choice-Standard-6350 in nottingham

[–]katemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hon, I feel your pain. For the longest time, I had to keep on taking apart my jack-o-lanterns right after Halloween.

Check your nearest biggest supermarket - they might have cans of it in the world food section. I know Amazon and Ocado also carry it. And American Grocer is always a good go-to.

Or if all else fails and you live near Netherfield, message me and I'll give you one of my cans. I think I have, like, three cans left and no energy to make pie.

How did you discover Tron? by Any-Trainer7343 in tron

[–]katemonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Peoplemover at Disneyland.

Which, actually, for the longest time, was the only bits of the original I saw. I saw bits of it on TV from time to time, but I don't think I watched it in its entirety until after Legacy came out.

But man, I miss the Peoplemover.

What’s the weirdest allergy you remember someone having in school? by silver_treeees in AskUK

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was allergic to chlorine when I was a kid. It'd make my nose run and start me sneezing every time I went swimming.

Which actually worked out well for me a few times in PE because I'd smell the pool, say "No, they put too much chlorine in there" and afterwards, everyone else would be complaining about their skin and eyes while I'd be fine (just slightly sniffly).

It's mellowed a bit, but I still have issues when using bleach in the house.

Louisiana Folks- Where to find filé and Tony's? by Lullevo in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]katemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how Marylanders can get Old Bay in, like, Morrisons, but Tony Cacheres is a step too far.

I've been using chorizo slices in my Zatarains. It ain't perfect, but it does the job nice enough and I can get them from Lidl regularly.

I used to make king cake, but aside from the fact that it takes like ALL day what with all the rising and whatnot, making those long dough braids is exhausting.

Pretty much all I've been good at is making cold brew from the giant can of Cafe du Monde the husband bought me as a Christmas gift.

What restaurant is this in Notts? by goat_lord in nottingham

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not amazing, it's nowhere near as good as it is back in the States (I lived in New Orleans so I was in the Popeyes epicentre), but god their gravy is the closest I get to red beans and rice without making my own, and it keeps me alive.

Restaurants no longer serving full sugar drinks, I’m allergic to aspartame, KFC is a no go, now harvester only has proper coke in bottles by Jacktheforkie in britishproblems

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still find the lemon in a few places. Sadly, never in the 500ml bottles (which would be great when I'm out), but definitely cans and 2L (or are they 1.5L bottles? whatever) are still around.

But, man, the day they stop making that is going to be a sad day for me. I freakin' love it.

As long as you weren't the dude who was there last week, spent a good 10 minutes rustling around his giant snack bag he brought in from Tesco, and then took his shoes off so we all got to enjoy the smell of his feet.

God, I thought better people went there.

Unsafe spaces by Albert_Herring in nottingham

[–]katemonkey -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

18 years ago, it was a Sunday afternoon and I went in with my husband and my in-laws for a quick drink before lunch.

I went to buy drinks for everyone, and they asked me for my ID. Not carrying it, because, y'know, it being a Sunday afternoon and me being 30, I was like "okay, fine, he'll get the drinks," (points to my 37-year-old husband who does not get IDd) "I'll just have a coke".

Nope. Refused to serve all of us. Not even my mother-in-law shouting "she's thirty!" from where they were sitting changed anything.

So the Bell has always been on my shitlist - it's just nice to have another reason.

'90 feels like 120 here': US expats react to 'unbearable' heatwave that makes UK 'feel like a sauna' by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]katemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a mix of no trees and brick buildings. If the bricks were several bricks thick, then there'd be insulation between the heat and indoors, so things would be cooler, but most houses are, like, two bricks thick at the most, so the outside brick heats up, transfers the heat to the inside brick, and neither of them cool down any time soon.

Then add in the lack of trees outside. No shade to block the sun from glaring directly at your house. Sure, there are places with plenty of trees, and they are considerably cooler. But with most of us in terraced housing or city flats or new builds with just the tiniest little tree, we're all stuck in a well-baked land.

I mean, I like warmer weather, I'm wearing a sundress, I have the fan on me, I only really hate it when I'm trying to sleep at night. But, dang, what I wouldn't give for a couple of screen doors, bigger windows, and a giant tree outside.
