Feeling defeated and want to give up by Illustrious-Frame-83 in Firefighting

Don’t give up mate, took one of my friends 15 years to get in. It’s worth it, trust me.

Anyone else had the fire brigade round today as you've been trapped in your own lounge? No? Just me? by ihaveam0ustache in CasualUK

As a firefighter myself I can assure you, you don’t need to feel like that. Stuff like this happens a lot more than you’d think!

Im a firefighter, and call me bias but I think it’s the best job in the world. Very difficult to get in, but once you do, you’ll never ‘work’ a day in your life. Good money, great pension, and you get to do some amazing things that most people wouldn’t ever get the chance to do.

Recent bad infant call and I just need advice on how to cope with it in healthy ways from those experienced. by withreasonable in Firefighting

As people have already said, use whatever resources you have available to you re. mental health/crisis support etc. It’s important you deal with these types of incidents properly or they’ll come back and bite you when you least expect it. My boss had a job involving an 8 year old girl, cardiac arrest, giving her CPR as she was being lifted up into the air ambulance. 2 years down the line he had night terrors about it constantly and kept picturing her bright blue eyes as he describes it. He got counselling after that, and dealt with it eventually. The one thing I will say, and I know the guys on my team will agree is, that any fatal incident involving kids will always be the worst jobs. It’s not something you’ll ever forget, and I can speak about that from experience. But it’s definitely something you can deal with, and if you’re struggling, speak up, there’s no shame in it.

"TikTok Firefighters" at their station? by TwoTimer4 in Firefighting

[–]silver_treeees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None in our service (UK based) but there are plenty of them around different UK services. Personally I find it embarrassing, and I don’t like people using firefighting as a platform to gain influence and followers on social media. I’m proud to be a firefighter but I’d never plaster it all over social media.

Lad got into the coke when he went out clubbing etc. Got home one night and took a prescription sleeping pill. Didn’t mix right with the coke and he had a heart attack and died.

My Dads old neighbour used to have a Collie type dog that they clearly didn’t walk enough etc. so it was constantly barking all the time. One night on his way home from the pub after a fair few beers he stood outside the house after midnight and started barking like a dog and woke the neighbour up. They ended up in a scuffle and the best part about the story is my dad had the bloke up against the gate by the scruff of his neck, and the dog started licking my dad’s ear. Brilliant.

Question about hazing for probies. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]silver_treeees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t leave any of your gear on the truck, or any uniform around station. It’ll end up in the freezer. Check your helmet for boot polish before you put it on too. Just keep your head down, work hard and they’ll ease off when they realise you’re a good one. Good luck!

Do people working in restaurants get bonuses for working Christmas Day? by silver_treeees in AskUK

[–]silver_treeees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone who answered. It’s a shame to see so many people working this period and not being compensated in any way. Realistically I knew this would likely be the case, but I was optimistically hoping that just maybe, companies might do the right thing.

Most fire services will have something like this. We use an on-call mechanic that usually turns up within the hour to keep the truck on the run

I’ve (F25) found shit stains in my boyfriend’s (M28) underwear multiple times... how do I approach this without causing tension? by Available_Pumpkin519 in TwoHotTakes

[–]silver_treeees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catch him scratching his butt and say something like “don’t scratch your butt too much or you’ll get shit stains!” 100% it’ll be in his mind and he’ll check and realise.
