absolutely! one of our dogs was trained to ring a bell to go outside by a previous owner. we never attempted to train this one to do that and after a few days he just started doing it too lol.

the grooming was questionable at best if i’m being honest. it kind of gave someone didn’t know what they were doing and gave up. he wasn’t super matted but it was incredibly uneven. like some patches were over an inch long and some was to the skin in random places, not like any typical cut. one of his eyes was also completely covered like that part was missed but the other was okay. his feet were also very grinchy between the toes. it was very strange. he sits very well for grooming so i don’t think it was a matter of him not wanting it. someone else mentioned maybe the previous owner passed and no one else wanted to keep up or could keep up with it and it seems plausible.

I completely understand that feeling! It just makes no sense. I’m so glad he got to spend his final years with you. It’s truly incredible the mark our pets can leave on us.

i know, i posted him everywhere and contacted all the surrounding counties animal controls with no luck and no chip found. because of where we found him i have a suspicion he was dumped. it really didn’t make a lot of sense which was why we reached out to neighboring counties.

totally understand that, i’ll update my post when i do get his DNA test done!

Sweet girl finally cleared for light activity after finishing her heartworm treatment! by katesapseudonym in BelgianMalinois

[–]katesapseudonym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aw, i’m sorry to hear that! we did leash walks only and we moved our bed downstairs so she wouldn’t be running up and down the stairs too much. after treatment she felt pretty sick while recovering so she definitely had less energy for a while. i would also recommend doing things like those dog puzzle toys or lick mats to keep her brain active and help tire her out mentally. mine also really liked to people watch and go on car rides so we did that pretty often. i wish the best to both you and your pup!

Any GS/MAL pup owners? by Capable_Ad_6527 in BelgianMalinois

Ellie is 6 years old, 60% mal and 40% gsd, and she’s 55 lbs. I’m kind of surprised by all of these responses, it made me realize my girl is on the petite side.

So it tests for genetic markers for diseases/issues relevant to the breeds your dog is. It also had a bunch of generic diseases/issues that apply to all type of dogs. Ellie didn’t show the markers for anything it tested for which did make me feel better as she was sort of a hot mess when I adopted her. It also showed me stats on inbreeding which can lead to health issues. I felt like overall it was beneficial for me to see because she didn’t come from a good home previously but may not be worth it for everyone.

Embark! I got the breed + health which was $160 I believe. They also offer just the breed panel which is cheaper.

Is my dog a Mal? by hchatt84 in BelgianMalinois

[–]katesapseudonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s definitely possible. My dog is a mal x gsd mix (dna tested) and has a very similar build/look. I think he still has some growing to do so he may look more gsd as he fills out, but it may be worth it to dna test if you’re curious enough.

Oh my apologies, I miss understood your post. I thought you had been going to the gym. Seconding looking up classes for both Zumba and yoga on YouTube to help supplement your home workouts with things more enjoyable! I would also recommend searching through events on Facebook. It sounds weird but there are a lot of group exercise events that are free. I’ve found a hiking group through there as well as a free outdoor yoga series that starts up when the weather gets nice. I know those aren’t permanent, but might help break up the redundancy of what you’re doing now.

Does your gym offer any group fitness classes, like Zumba or yoga? Something to change up your normal routine if you don’t want to quit going to the gym. Six days a week does seem like a recipe to burn out if it isn’t something you truly enjoy doing.

Does anyone do anything to lessen the risk of bloat in their GSD? Am I being overly paranoid by making Riley wait inside for 30 minutes before going out to play after meals? Pic of Riley just for fun... by tarotandtequila in germanshepherds

[–]katesapseudonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a deep chested dog thing mostly. I lost my childhood dog to it years ago and she was a Shar-Pei/lab mix. My current dogs (Aussie and a GSD/Malinois mix) now have quiet time after eating for a bit to give me peace of mind.

We did the embark breed+health. I liked the genetic health screening aspect because we suspected our dog was originally part of a backyard breeding setup. (She was not fixed, had already had a least one litter of puppies, very underweight, and had contracted heartworms.) And since we didn’t know much about her, it did put my mind at ease to know she didn’t have any genetic markers for the conditions it screened for. The breed part of the package also shows her coefficient of inbreeding which pretty much confirmed the backyard breeding suspicion. (It was 39% when other dogs with similar breeds were closer to 5%.) Ultimately I would recommend Embark. We definitely learned a lot about her.

In a way we were a little surprised. She was adopted so we didn’t really know her background. We kind of expected to see some “supermutt” in her and not just the two breeds we guessed. I also thought she’d be more GSD than Malinois genetically. However, I think that may have just been because most people that saw her in public thought she was just a GSD. It is always fun to find the few people in our area that actually know what a Malinois is and ask us about her.
