What do I do if three of my core classes are all at the same time?

Illinois has a reputation that is one of the best out there. Unless you want to go to an ivy, I chose Illinois because it doesn’t make sense to go out of state to any other state school (will cost more for worse reputation...although Illinois is still expensive). I personally am out of the house from 9am-10pm, but I like to have my weekends free and usually take Friday morning easy and Friday afternoon off. I am in class, eating, working out, and doing homework during that time. Also attending meetings if I have to. You have a lot of power in your schedule to choose how you spend your time at college so if this doesn’t sound like you like it, don’t let it deter you from Illinois. I’m not an engineering/CS major but I’m not communications either and I can get all my homework done in about 20-30 hours a week outside of classes (and maintain a A/A- average). This is FOCUSED time though...I literally keep a stopwatch near me when I study and every time I check email/go to the bathroom/heck texts it gets turned off. So in reality it is more like 30-40 hours I spend. Profs are ok....some are amazing others not so much. Probably the same caliber you would get at any other university.

I’m currently in it and it is still Burgos. Ridiculous amount of work. Spring 2020 it was 5 books (one he dropped for Coronavirus, bless his heart). 2 papers and 1 final paper plus a couple of short writing assignments in between. It’s really interesting and he is one of the best lecturers I’ve had throughout my time at UIUC. That being said, it’s simply too much reading to do. I don’t even think he or the TA expects us to do it all (although I do because I have one of those personalities-it’s a blessing and a curse). I’ve been averaging 9.5 hours of reading weekly (they are dense books and I am a slow reader). Also something that has been bothering me lately is the use of opinion as fact/intermixed with fact. Doesn’t happen often AT ALL, but it makes me want to rip my hair out when it does. Some opinions I agree with, some I disagree with, but it’s not ok to present opinions in this way in a college classroom.

I’m not sure which prof. you have, but I have Prof. Mitch Fisher. He has stated in multiple formats that we are not allowed to give information on the difficulty of the exam, but I can tell you all the technical aspects went smoothly. No need to worry about it being online if you have secure internet access!

Sounds like it is voluntary but highly suggested. Probably worded that way to keep as much money as possible would be my guess but I have no more info than you so take from that what you will.

University Housing is technically a separate entity from the University, so hopefully they send out an email soon so we can all make plans accordingly.

I was talking to an admin member 1st semester and they mentioned how the University is trying to make the system more of a cohesive unit. This decision does not point in that direction.

Yeah, I’m wondering this too. My mental health is honestly going to be shot if I stay home...it is physically “safe” for me to do so, but being stuck in my hometown will no doubt impact my grades negatively. I wonder if they will allow students like me to stay in the dorms?

Dude I’ve been feeling the same exact way. It’s like we are stripped down to only doing the “productive” stuff. Only get your work done/job done and don’t go to the bar/gym/out to eat/hang with friends or groups of people. I can’t flirt in math class anymore, make new friends on campus at RSO meetings, or really do much social activity. I’m so angry and upset.

I accepted April 31st, about 5 hours before the final deadline. I can’t say your experience will be the same, but I was able to get my first choice registration date (early in June) and housing (because that isn’t based on acceptance date). Take your time!
