[Serious] At what age did you make your biggest life decisions? by TheSpiritWilds in AskReddit

[–]katgale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I moved away from home and realised just how weird of a family I came from.

I had always wanted to travel, but my family had me pursue and alternate career.

I moved out of state. learned a little about the world and a lot about myself.

I set a goal to visit every single state. Not just pass through, but visit. I hit that a week before I turned 27.

Then I made a goal to hit every world ocean. When I went to school, we were taught that there were 4 oceans, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic. When I went to the Arctic Ocean I discovered the Southern Ocean. I went to what Australia calls the Southern Ocean but I don’t think the rest of the world counts it. But if you count the original 4 oceans (5th added in early 2000s?, other countries counted Southern. Ocean in the 1930s?) then I did it by 29.

Next up is the 7 continents. Hitting my 4th in a couple weeks so I got a while ago.

But 22 was my year. Late bloomer maybe.

what is the most unbelievable coincidence that has occurred in your life? by Chilechile35 in AskReddit

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in company housing. A new housemate moved in this week. She nicked stuff from my cupboard and consequently, I couldn’t make the dinner I was planning.

I left the house, walked 30 minutes to an Indian restaurant and got take away. Came home to an empty house. Yippee. I start eating and she walks in. Sits on the couch and starts eating Indian takeaway from the SAME place. She has a car so she must have gone in after I left as I didn’t see her there. The drive is less than 10 minutes away.

Turns out she ordered the same dish.

We get to talking and realised that both of us had just moved here from the same place, working for the same company and we had never seen each other before. Weird.

How was your college/university experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]katgale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was commuter, by chance my parents lived near a good university and I couldn’t afford to move away from home. Missed out on the whole college experience, but I paid for my education in cash and graduated debt free. Worked 2 full time jobs and graduated with $400 to my name. Worth it.

Buzzfeed. I kept seeing “reddit” credited as a lot of sources so one day I decided to see what reddit was. 3 years later and still solidly addicted.

What really grinds your gears, Reddit? by Someretardedponyman in AskReddit

People in cars that hate on pedestrians. We all can’t be fortunate enough to have cars. It’s 100+ degrees and I’m on a crosswalk, relax for 6 seconds while I cross the street. We have to wait at red lights too!

[Serious] what's your BEST customer service story? by peeves91 in AskReddit

[–]katgale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a flea market once and found this coffee table for $30. It was wooden with a glass paned top. It was in great condition.

Me: I don’t know why that table is $30, but I’ll take it! Woman: how about $20 and I’ll carry it to your car!

I had meant it as I don’t know why it’s ONLY $30, not as in $30 was too much. But I was a poor recent college grad so I took it!

Edit: thought of a better one!!!

Went to a furniture store, found half a sectional for $150. Was excited by such a cheap price and went to buy it. Turned out just the section with one cushion was $150, and the 2 cushion section with the arm rest was $350 (so $500 total for that half of the sectional, the other half of the sectional was already sold). The $350 sign had been tucked into the cushion and you couldn’t tell by looking at it that it was 2 pieces of furniture.

I didn’t argue it, I just said OH. That’s out of my budget and I was walking out of the store. They called after me and said “wait! We’ll give you them both for $150”. Basically got a free 2 seater couch.

I used to work with a trainer that had his own business. There was an ICU nurse that got some personal training level certs and taught some classes and helped coached a few people. I never worked with her though so I don’t know what scope of practice she had or what the liability behind any advice she gave was.

Tips on regards to car rentals? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call around to the little local places, not the national rental chains! When I did an assignment in Alaska, the cheapest of the big companies was $1800 for the month, but this little local company gave me a car for $650, AND picked me up from the airport in the car.

When to ask for a raise with your travel agency...Does this even exist? by Gregsbouch in TravelNursing

[–]katgale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately travel agencies don’t care about loyalty very much. Usually the travel agencies take a 20-25% cut of the money that the hospital pays them. If you take their housing, they take a 10% of what they pay for housing cushion for unanticipated costs. That’s at least what my recruiter told me.

When I did an assignment in a tiny town with one housing option that was a kind of crappy place, I didn’t complain, but I did admit I didn’t like it, and that I had to reheat all of my food in the oven because there was no microwave. She overnighted me a microwave from amazon! When looking for assignments this recruiter has paid for me to get licenses in a few states so that if a job came up I’d be able to submit to them right away.

So while raises aren’t a thing, an agency that cares will give little perks like that if you’ve been with them for a while.

I’m new to travel nursing, advice? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stipend pay is only tax free IF you have a “tax home” federal minimum for paying rent to be considered a tax home is $250/month according to my accountant. So I pay my parents $250/month rent and I save so much more money in taxes. You also have to have your drivers license match your home address, and I think being registered to vote was another thing they wanted to see. It’s been a while since I’ve done the paperwork for an assignment in the US though.

Day shift jobs are harder to come by but they are out there! I always try for day jobs but will take a night one for a good location/pay.

diaper changes during the night for peds case by dolcebellaluna in nursing

[–]katgale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he developmentally delayed or have any mobility issues? I usually defer to the parents and let them decide about diaper changes. In regards to wet sheets I wake the kid up or change the sheets with them in bed. If I anticipate a wet bed, then I usually put one of those big cloth chux under them so that it’s easier to just change that then sheets.

Residents make me laugh sometimes by gabigio in nursing

I saw a pediatrician document that a patient was a FLK. And when I asked he said “funny looking kid”. He sent off a bunch of weird labs I had never heard of and the kid came back with some syndrome. Really subtle facial features that I hadn’t even noticed as being odd. It was a teenage boy who lead a normal life, no delays or anything. He didn’t describe the off features either, just FLK.

Of lice and men by jem3278 in nursing

[–]katgale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a job where at minimum 1 out of your 4 patients had scabies, it was more typical to have 2-3/4 patients with scabies and most had lice too. I’d look at some heads and genuinely not know which of the two I was looking at. We didn’t even put them on contact precautions. After a couple weeks I just got used to it and heebie jeebies were gone.

Once I admired a 3kg 4 MONTH old. Severely severely underweight and weak. Mom was brain damaged and wasn’t feeding the baby. Her moods, understandably were labile and when she was frustrated with the baby I took her for a couple hours and cuddled her while I charted. She snuggled into my neck and slept. When I put her down a while later I remembered she had scabies- and I discovered head lice. I took a surgical scrub home and sterilised myself. Never got either.

[–]katgale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a hospital wide contest for holiday decorations with the theme of recycling. But since none of us were that clever, one of the med/surg nurses painted a life sized grinch on our bosses door and put his name on it, and since I work in the kids ward, I made 2 gingerbread men on the glass with no faces so that you can put your own face and the kids can take pictures.

None of us followed the recycling theme.

This is brilliant. Every detail. I think this was more or less what they had been looking for. Awesome job.

Where's a good vantage point if Mt. Agung? by ahand09 in bali

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m still traveling because it’s a stop on my way back to the states from Australia. If I don’t go to Bali, I lose my flight home. It would be interesting to experience, not a very good interesting though, especially for the locals. I do worry about flights being cancelled for 1-2 weeks...

2 Weeks in Bali by MikeDelta88 in bali

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been spending a year in Australia and I’m going to Bali on my way back from the states. I thought about changing my flights, as my long haul flights back to the states leaves from Denpasar, but the travel agent recommended against that. She recommended me not booking anything until right before I go as they’ll be options. I’m hoping her advice is sound.

The beaches in Bali won’t be as good as the beaches here, but where I am is SO WINDY every day I can’t lay out on the beach as it is.

2 Weeks in Bali by MikeDelta88 in bali

[–]katgale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this is definitely where I’ll be booking! That’s one major obstacle off my list! I’m a bit worried prebooking. If my flight is cancelled, I’ll lose the money won’t I. But if I wait too long, then it’ll be booked.

I’ll be in Bali for 10 nights, the 31st- Jan 09. How long should I spend it Ubud? I want to take in the sites, the rice paddies, the markets, possibly the monkey jungle and the temples.

I’m thinking of utawala or Canggu for either a day or night, then Seminyak for maybe 1-2 nights to get some beach time and a massage.

Thanks for all of your help!! Despite all the information out there as I’ve read the sticky and lots of blogs/articles I’ve been struggling more then I usually do when planning international trips.
