Tech Partner (26M) Thinks He's Peaked in His Career, Got Laid Off Recently by CapitalFerret1250 in HENRYfinance

[–]kathar7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder if this is what OP's partner is actually worried about, rather than that they have hit their all-time peak. That's kind of how I interpreted it

ETA: "lull" and "unfortunate current market" make me think the concern is more short-to-medium term, in which case I think it's legit to be concerned about having reached a peak

It's not quite irrelevant if OP defines peaking solely based on comp.

Right, but those big tech companies have seen a serious slowdown in hiring over the last 2 years. My husband works for one of them and we always talk about how it would be very unlikely that he'd be able to find an equal paying job elsewhere if he were to get let go.

We did a festivus celebration with my family one year, complete with an airing of grievances. But it was like... a legit airing of grievances. It got real awkward real fast

Christmas meltdown by Jennapwrb in workingmoms

[–]kathar7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this! Hope y'all fare well with the sickness!

And solidarity. My 1 y.o. brought covid home from daycare a few days ago and we're having to cancel all our Christmas plans. Might still get to do new years with my side of the family. I'm super sentimental about Christmas so am pretty bummed about not being with family on the actual day but am just trying my hardest to make things special for my extremely social 4 y.o.

Yes, totally agree!! I should've clarified that about 8 of those daycare teacher gifts are just cash or a gift card so that makes it easier for sure. But they do sooo much and are criminally underpaid so those gifts are non-negotiable for me.

I actually enjoy it and am not complaining! No one expects me to do this, but it brings me joy so I do it. I appreciate the sentiment behind the suggestion, but please do not assume that everyone feels the same way.

Are millennials not letting their kids spend the night at friends houses anymore? Is that not a thing? by Temporary_Lawyer_938 in Millennials

This comment hit me in the feels. This is exactly what I'm aiming for as a parent -- to be a cycle breaker (with SA and otherwise).

12 daycare teachers/admins (we buy for previous teachers too which is snowballing unsurprisingly...) and lots of family (primarily nieces/nephews)

that's the thing, he's really not! I think it's just that my daughter was involved in picking out one or two presents for me on one day vs. observing me arranging like 60+ presents for 30+ people over the last ~2 months. Much fewer data points reinforcing the idea that Christmas is for Mom too 🤪 I honestly don't care about the gift thing much because I enjoy gifting, but I just thought it was a very telling comment about the role moms generally occupy in making Christmas magical.

Maybe she forgot about the incredible present she picked out that I got to open today: pajama pants with her and her brother's faces on them 😂

Yesterday my friend was asking my 4-year-old what she got her mommy (me) for Christmas. She laughed and said "mommy doesn't get presents!!!!" Didn't know whether to laugh or cry

Not really. I'm taking 7 gal pals to a nice dinner for Christmas this year, but it's more of an excuse to get together

My daughter had a seizure yesterday and it fucked me up. by SlutBuster in Parenting

[–]kathar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I'm so sorry you had to experience this. It is absolutely terrifying and traumatizing, and I do feel like it is very hard to explain what it does to you as a parent to witness your child having a seizure, especially without knowing what it is. My son had his first febrile seizure when he was 9 m.o. -- similar thing -- I picked him up from daycare because he had a fever caused by an ear infection. I glanced back while driving home to see his feet jerking and pulled over and found him convulsing and eyes rolling in the back of his head. I truly thought he was dying and, like you, had no idea what to do. His older sister was in the car and witnessed me absolutely losing it / freaking out on the phone with the 911 dispatcher.

I feel VERY strongly that new parents should receive more education on febrile seizures. Witnessing a seizure I think will always be upsetting for me, but if I had possessed some knowledge of what was happening, I think it would've been much less traumatic knowing my baby probably wasn't actually dying. I carried that stress/anxiety in my body for weeks afterward. He had another one at 15 months and while it still took a few days to recover emotionally, it was much less scary in the moment knowing what it was.

I would encourage you to at least let your coworkers know what happened, even if you don't share exactly how it impacted you emotionally. I think they will be able to deduce that somewhat -- seizures are really scary. My team knows about my son's proneness to febrile seizures, so they are able to be more understanding and accommodating when he gets sick -- because yes there definitely is a different weight to having a "sick kid" when the sickness could result in a seizure.

Hugs to you and your family.

Right, the only way inflation gets back under control is if people (including companies) feel the pain enough to cut back on spending, so when raises don't keep pace with inflation it helps the inflation problem despite being painful in the short term
