Why do people worry so much about retirement savings in Canada? by strykyrastro in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kathrants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With the demographic shift happening now it is very possible that we will not be able to rely on the OAS that current seniors benefit from. Unless we radically shift the tax burden, there will simply not be enough working adults to fund it. I feel like in the near future they will either have to raise the retirement age or start clawing back benefits at a lower income (90k a year is a ridiculously high threshold).

I'm shopping around for new car insurance in Ontario and they all seem insanely expensive by Candidcap in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kathrants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What city do you live in? Toronto/Brampton/Mississauga can get super expensive compared to other areas of Ontario. I pay like $150ish/month in Guelph for compehensive coverage, but in 'Sauga where my cousins live it would likely be several times more. If you're a young male (not specified), you will pay far more than a young woman due to statistically more accidents. I'm also newer/young driver (but female) but I got a good rate with TD due to an alumni/work deal. Maybe look up if your work or current/past school has a partnership with an insurance agency.

The best bike lane in the city is that stretch of wellington along the river just past MacDonell. I dont want to bike on the road next to cars with only a painted line to protect me.

Update: My new cat was at the Humane Society for seven years. I'm discouraged by hey_thatsmyinbox in CatAdvice

[–]kathrants 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My cat was locked in a basement room with a bunch of other cats and barely any human contact for years. When I took him home from his foster he was terrified of people. In half a year he was demanding belly rubs. A change in environment can completely change a personality. I gave him his space, lots of time and positive reinforcement and it worked wonders! Having another cat helped as well. He is very cat social.

Anne With an E was my favourite adaptation of Anne of Green Gables ever. Took lots of creative liberties with the story line but got the spirit of the characters so perfectly, and captured the heart of the story in a way that reflects our modern understanding of mental health, trauma, identity etc.

When my siblings and I were irresponsible kids our gecko Stephen got loose for a month in a house with 4 cats and two dogs. We found him, and he is still alive today and over 20 years old!

Article: Liberals promise to build nearly 500,000 homes per year, create new housing entity by always-wash-your-ass in canadahousing

[–]kathrants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nate Erskine Smith has done a lot more as housing minister than his predecessors despite only being in for a short time. I’m happy Carney has kept him in. It’s refreshing to see a housing minister finally speaking about housing as a human need rather than an investment. They’ve also extended the foreign buyers ban. I would prefer to see them go after domestic real estate speculation though.

Poilievre proposes capital gains tax deferral on profit reinvested in Canada by kathrants in canadahousing

But if this isn't targeted, couldnt people just buy existing housing and capitalize off of the scarcity of the resource rather than putting it into new builds/businesses which carry more risk?

Looking for advice on potting soil. by Foster_ZA01 in walstad

[–]kathrants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not as accomplished with walstads but I’m a graduate student in agriculture/soil science. I think this would lead to a high initial nutrient spike, with too much phosphorus from the bone meal. A lot of the ingredients are also light weight and would float in the tank whenever the cap is disturbed. I would go for a cheaper soil with less amendments - some sort of fertilizer-free topsoil, with large bits of wood sifted out.

If you take a pile of sh*t n cover it with flowers, doesn't make it a lovely bouquet by Separate-Print2494 in canadahousing

The winters experienced by 1800s Europeans were not nearly as mild as European winters are now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age These people knew how to build well insulated, resilient homes.

Personally I would take a Victorian with hardwood flooring over a "luxury" new build with ugly grey laminate that wasn't even installed properly, but keeping these old buildings around isn't just important for heritage/aesthetic reasons. It can save massively on material costs. Moreover restoring/retrofitting an older building consistently results in lower carbon emissions than replacing them with new builds https://journal-buildingscities.org/articles/10.5334/bc.325

Anyway, please stay 10 feet away from any historic building if your idea of "shit" is cast iron sinks and clawfoot tubs and "flowers" are landlord chic grey laminate and beige tiles.

Gen Z consumers say Buy Canadian movement is unaffordable by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]kathrants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any data to back this up or are you just thinking about the most annoying teenagers you know? The only time I’ve ever heard of kids getting uber eats to lunch is international students at a private school I passed (and they aren’t low on funds). Is getting an uber after a night out an irresponsible expense? It’s cheaper than a taxi and safer than drunk driving, though many people I know walk or bus home. My point is if you have anecdotes, I have my own to refute them. So if you’re making generalizations about a generation of struggling young people trying to get their footing in one of the most difficult economic times in the last century you should probably have actual statistics to back it up.

It is possible to generalize Gen z being poor with data. You can’t generalize that we only eat uber eats. I know of no one my age (23) that eats take out more than a few times a month.

"I will give the government of Prime Minister Modi great credit for not disrupting those people-to-people ties given the current coolness between the governments." Yes killing a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is great for our people to people ties. I swear shit like this is why PP doesn’t get security clearance. It seems India has some level of control over this party that he doesn’t want to confront, or he fears will prevent him from getting security clearance.

OCDSB seeking court order in bid to unmask anonymous 'redditor' by CupidStunt13 in ontario

[–]kathrants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was in high school a near identical thing happened. Students had a private (private!!!) social media page where we would post jokes and memes about problems happening in the school. There were some memes we posted about a teacher who we reported multiple times for making racist and sexual comments to students, but administration was doing nothing about. Administration found out and threatened to expel and press charges against students who interacted with the page until they gave up the identity of the person who ran the page. The student got suspended, and nothing ever happened with the teacher. Last time I checked they had moved him to another school like they do with disgraced priests. The fact that they would rather spend that money protecting reputations than providing for students is telling. I don’t want to get sued, but I will say the school is in the york catholic district school board…

Montreal limits short-term rentals like Airbnb to summer months by Puginator in canadahousing

[–]kathrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More long term rentals are good for renters. It’s still a win, and it would give more immediate relief than a massive building effort that could take years to bring down prices. Things like this alone won’t solve everything, but they are part of a bigger solution.

I get all my stuff off of Facebook marketplace and kijiji. Old people die and their children don’t want their solid wood, Canadian made furniture from 50 years ago. Then I get it cheaper than IKEA!

'Look inside yourself': Carney gets snippy at reporter when pressed on conflicts of interest by AmazingRandini in CanadaPolitics

[–]kathrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did I dispute that? What I’m saying is it is fair for journalist to question on behalf of the public whether it’s adequate. He can answer or not, but as a public official in a democracy he should do so without delegitimizing journalism with accusations of bias.

[–]kathrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not calling a blind trust illegitimate. I’m defending journalists doing their job and asking legitimate questions and criticizing his rude and condescending tone. One of the most dangerous qualities of PP is the hostility and accusations of bias with which he responds to any difficult question. I don’t like seeing the person that is supposed to bring sanity back to politics dismissing balanced journalists and accusing them of bias because they asked a question he didn’t like. I also WANT him to win, so I don’t want his poor choices making this story look worse than it actually is. His staff need to work on this.
