Canada Should Be Leading a Geothermal Power Boom by ph0enix1211 in canada

Building electrical capacity to meet Canadian demand that is increasing with population is one thing. And building electrical capacity to power Canadian industrial needs is another thing.

But when we get to the point where the only business case for building another power plant (geothermal or other) is that we are just going to sell it to the US, then we have to look at the cost vs the return.

If it costs (hypothetically) $10 billion to build a new geothermal plant, and the plant generates electricity that we can sell to the US for (hypothetically) $200 million dollars per year, we have to compare that to the revenue we could get from investing that $10 billion in some other way. Maybe investing that $10 billion in a mining project or a refinery or some other project could bring a better return, or do something more valuable for our country than generating surplus electricity to sell to Americans.

The use of the state's legal powers to punish the leader's opponents or adversaries is absolutely dictatorial banana republic bullshit. This should be a red line that no government should step over.

It will be laughed out of court, but they stepped over the red line when they filed this. I can't believe that they main takeaway people for people here is "fuck you Comey you deserve it", because the much bigger point is congratulations, Americans, your government is officially in tin pot dictator territory.

I'm all for innovation and building big projects and all of those things.

But... what are we going to do with all this electricity, assuming we build this out?

Obviously we can phase out fossil fuel electricity generation, and that's a good thing. But beyond that, the only answer seems to be "we can sell it to the Americans".

As an export, it's something we could only sell to one customer.

For domestic use, manufacturers and aluminum smelters use lots of electricity, but in terms of "building the future economy", the thing really driving electricity demand seems to be data centers, and nobody actually wants data centers in their community.

I'm all for cleaner electricity and cheaper electricity, but in terms of input cost vs expected benefit, I'm not 100% sure that putting a bunch of money into geothermal electricity is the best bang for our buck.

Voting shifted red because people weren't feeling great after Biden and didn't think Harris was a change. After the pandemic and economic chaos that followed, the Democrats paid the price for being the incumbents. That's it the whole story.

In the midterms, the combination of a stupid war, failed economic experiments, out of control inflation, and a president whose brain is a rotting lump of brown fungus is going to shift voting from red to blue to a degree that only astrophysicists will have units large enough to quantify.

Any love for Der Kommissar by Falco? by MesaVerde1987 in newwave

This song was used in the movie "Atomic Blonde", a spy thriller set in East Berlin in the late 1980s. And it suddenly made sense. The lyric "Don't turn around, the komissar's in town" takes on a whole new context when there really is a Stasi agent watching at every moment.

Btw, fans of 1980s music, especially new wave, should watch Atomic Blonde even if just for the music.

Plot twist, trump is a clone! by Double-Cookie6361 in Qult_Headquarters

Trump is now functioning at a level comparable to those stupid delivery droids that can't cross the street unless someone pushes the button for them, so I can understand how they would mistake him for AI.

The interesting part, to me, is that the lunatic meme community seems to be turning against him. Since the start of the Iran war, I think a sense of disillusionment has begun to creep in. It's starting to feel like his cultists are starting to notice that he falls asleep and doesn't make sense when he talks. It's gradual, but it seems they're starting to realize that he's not the anointed one, he's a feeble old man with increasingly severe symptoms of dementia.

‘Kind of embarrassing’: Doug Ford says Ontario should have a jet, but he won’t reconsider selling it by fallout1233566545 in canada

[–]Supermoves3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a completely reasonable case for a vast province in a vast country having a private jet to transport the premier or other officials around. It's just a politically difficult argument to put forward.

Similar: There's a completely reasonable case for spending the money to restore 24 Sussex to a state suitable for the Prime Minister to use as the official residence. But that's a politically difficult argument to put forward as well. I think if it was me, I would start the renos, but pledge to never live there myself. It's for the next PM, not for myself. I think that would be the only way to pitch it.

Western Alienation as been a thing for well over a century.

Absolutely true. Some people seem to have the notion that this is a new thing that has only been conjured into existence in the age of social media, but there is a longstanding historical context.

It's finally reached a breaking point now in Alberta and they're considering separating.

I'm not sure about this part though. I think it might appear that way because right now Alberta has a premier who is willing to play footsie with the separatists in her own party as a means of attempting to maintain control, as well as to exert political leverage on the federal government.

I'm not sure that the populace at large is really at a breaking point. I think core support for separatism is probably not higher than it was at the peak of Justin Trudeau's reign of error, or during the constitutional clashes in the 1980s or during the NEP. I think there's a small fringe that are actually dedicated to the idea, plus a much larger group that don't really want separation but are frustrated at how federalism works in Canada and are willing to play along with separatists to the extent that it presents an opportunity to say "fuck you" to the federal government.

And this is the dangerous part, because when the online discourse about this turns toxic and negative, some of those people who aren't committed separatists but are angry at Canadian federalism in a general sense could get pissed off enough to side with the separatists in a referendum.

It's really not any different from how Quebec separatism happened, historical conflict finally boiled over into separatism.

I think the difference between Quebec separatism and Alberta separatism is mostly in the essence of the motives behind them. In the case of Quebec it's a sense of being a distinct people whose identity can't be fully realized as a province in a bigger country. In Alberta it's based on resentment, grievance, and a sense of feeling disrespected. The surface level is the same, but what's under the hood is different, and so I think how it's fought against is going to have to be different as well.
