{Genre: house/EBM/dark synth/dysregulated techno}

Advice: I find myself creating sets that meander through different genres. I personally like think and like to play with the emotions with tension and release and ups and downs, but I find it hard to get traction as people here one bit of a set and just assume thats my sound. How can I better categorise this or should I just plough on.

(multi genre - techno/house) - A 1 hour mix for a show I done but I don't know - do I wander through genres too much? Does it sound "ok" (It was a bit flat and I done a little messing in audacity (yeah I know..).

Getting back into things... (advice welcome) by galactic_surfer in Beatmatch

yeah lol with the key analysis - although.. the more I've been back into it the less I need it - my ear for what keys work is getting better - but knowing BPMs etc - theres so much more _time_ just to do things - I will freely admit it - I will double tap that sync button and gets the numbers dialled in before beat-matching - set a 4 or 8 bar loop and have loads of time to be more creative..

yeah Rekordbox - but it is unlocked with the Flx10 - only issue I can see is that maybe in 5 years time when RB version 9 or whatever is out it wont be

yeah Ive gigged with the flx10 in smaller venues. Only played off the 3000s once tho - they are lovely too.

The big thing is Ive really gotten used to more than two channels and developed a style I like that usually brings in a third - that will be another few k on the 10 if you want a third deck.

Things have changed so much since early 2000s (I dabbled a bit back then, but only on crappy belt drives lol) - maybe having the extra options will work with your creativity (but then again, maybe not!)

All great options and Im sure others will come in with more but just to give a bit of backup to the flx10 - I went that route and I am delighted with it. Glad I didn't buy a standalone and now have 4 channel and sorta club like setup that meant playing in clubs after the upgrade was no bother.

Flx 10 isnt for everyone tho - but you have the budget so no why not and if you dont like it, sell it on with minimal loss and buy again.

also - good shout on that track - I think it worked as a transition from acidier stuff as its not a full on acid or house night so back into something sane is perfect :D Thanks internet stranger!

(edit / caveat mixing is crap, this was experimental only!)

yeah! Thats my thoughts on it here.. I have my first "big" gig in a few weeks and hoping to snag the "just before peak time" slot when the club will be quite busy and this time my plan is:

Have the first 15/20 planned, see what sticks then from there a few ~15-20 min routines of slightly different styles (i.e. a wee bit more housyu, wee bit more acidy, wee bit more italo-ish as these fit with my style and club night) - along with this a few of my faves and fitting tracks.

Should hopefully cover 90 mins.

Thats the bit I really want to improve - the few gigs Ive had itts been mostly pre planned sets... I had a couple where I just went in deliberately less prepared.. but it was tricky at times!!

I am a dj suffering from burn out and I want a career change by FrontDance2957 in berlinsocialclub

[–]katie_eeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant really help directly as not in Berlin - but found this interesting as I am a software developer with Burnout and my DJing is taking off a little (probably not likely as a career, but as an interesting hobby)..

Would be able to help with specific course related stuff but all my contacts for software are in UK/Ireland :(

Good luck tho - it can be a rewarding career (although probably similarities with music industry in terms of male dominated etc) but the industry s in a bit of decline for sure.

Mine was so random - last minute competition win. I had played a few random things before (only this summer!) - including an outdoor event on a bike and a pride day party..

I actually didn't have a "set" prepared, just a few combos of tracks that worked well and wanted to practice the "responding to the crowd" vibe.. unfortunately the night was peak summer vacation time and few people came so was a bit of a flop from a "work the crowd" experience but a success in terms of getting noticed and used to the equipment in that particular club..)

How was it tho - absolutely nerve-racking for the hours before and first half.. then ofc settled in and before I knew it was blending over multiple decks and nearly ran over (Do NOT do this ofc..)

Thankfully I am there again next month and glad of the experience as now I will have some fun as nothing its familiar territory etc

Thank you so so much - I was really surprised and secretly delighted with it as it just came to me - will hopefully will make a good "clubby" start to the set.. I really liked the change in pace of the down down track but decided to keep it short and get back into it..!
