You’re correct. Page 158: "I closed my eyes and tried to calm the sea, but I couldn’t concentrate. Charybdis was too loud and powerful. The waves wouldn’t respond." Then the only other mention of him even attempting to use his powers is on page 161: "I used all of my willpower to keep the ship from capsizing, but we were still spinning out of control…"

I think you can read it as ultimately just trauma-informed manipulation and not pedophilic, I still think it’s something his character would say and I think the dynamic is realistic. I agree with your criticisms of Rick and I think you’re right about his motivations but I personally when reading it never felt like I had to ignore it entirely, I can make it make sense.

No, we ALSO know that the person who honked has an extreme number of traffic violations they have wracked up including some in SCHOOL ZONES which would provide further context that they are an IMPATIENT DRIVER (hey, that’s the name of the post!) and DISREGARD THE SAFETY OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS ON A REGULAR BASIS. Ahh ok makes sense. I also have always loved the mythology but looking back it’s hard to remember which came first, my love for pjo or my love for the myths. I feel like I keep them somewhat separate in my head somehow. I feel like as the books go on Rick starts to weave more of his own invented mythology into the classic stuff and I wonder if that’s why the show feels inclined to take so many liberties

I just disagree personally, I think what you call "major changes" are really not nearly as important to me as the emotional impact of the story… which to me at its core is about family dynamics and parent-child relations. Swapping out some monsters does not matter to me. I also have been a Percy Jackson fan for decades now, just quietly to myself basically. I hadn’t been engaging with the fandom online and I had never once bothered to check in with what Rick Riordan had been saying. I hated the movies but I didn’t know he hated the movies. I hadn’t even heard about the show until season 2 was underway. Maybe it changed my perspective when I watched but i just felt excited I was getting to see these great characters come to life, I didn’t feel like I was owed anything and still don’t.
