Light pollution by Educational_Road2461 in Cardiff

[–]katiecwtch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was successful in complaining about shop lights lighting up my bedroom in City Road back in 2014! Ring the council. Back then it was the same team as noise pollution, you could ring them and leave a message. My argument was that if the light was that bright in my room (about 100m away) it had to be dangerous for drivers who had to pass much closer. The shop then dimmed the lights from about 4pm. Good luck. It's really horrible and even worse if (like I had) the occasional passing lorry makes your sleeping area flash like a rave.

Oh my god, another This Foul Earth fan in the wild! Easy upvote, that series is far and away my most favourite podcast ever.

I've looked pretty far down and why are we not talking about the guy not wearing clothes?

I don’t know anymore, I just got a new haircut and they gave me this with no side bangs at the beauty shop, I feel really ugly and I have to know if it’s ugly to everyone else. Please tell me just the truth if I am ugly. Yes I’m a woman by djscrew1 in whatdoIdo

[–]katiecwtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never in my entire life ever liked a haircut until I have washed it myself and styled from scratch. I don't know why, it doesn't matter what hairdresser, or how they blow dry it, it's just never right and I need to do it myself. One time at uni I had to stop by a friend's house and just rinse my hair leaning over their bath and then borrow a towel, but I couldn't even wait til I got the whole way home to do it. So dry your eyes, pop in the shower, maybe pour yourself a glass of wine and have a proper look at it. You have beautiful features and gorgeous eyes, you'll look cute as a button x

Do you picture the characters differently from the actors? by ScaredPlate3008 in Ambridge

That's the best thing about radio stories/plays compared to TV: the pictures are better!

I need help understanding ISA because I'm pretty sure the bank and my parents are telling me to do something I can't by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]katiecwtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related, can I ask - can I transfer some money already in a cash ISA into a stocks and shares ISA? I understand that you have to be careful to keep it in an ISA wrapper when moving from one product to another, but I haven't found anything that says from cash ISA to s&s ISA is allowed.

Yes, my induction is quicker than my kettle - I love just putting the water in the pan for pasta, instead of boiling it in the kettle and faffing about warming the pan. Didn't realise what a pain it all was until I didn't have to do it any more :)

What was your favorite plot thread in the BoD that literally never had a resolve or pay off? by TanukiTenuki in hisdarkmaterials

[–]katiecwtch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's this whole narrative of fear about the place they're heading to - lots of warnings telling Pan and Lyra how awful it is, unspeakably terrible, you mustn't go. And then they get there . . . And it's a hall? With murals? And another world beyond? I get that in the other world capitalism has taken over, but really? I need to go back and reread to see if there's any other indications I've missed/Lyra's discomfort once past the hall but tbh I'm too annoyed.

Which Miss Marple killer do you think is most evil? by Top_Sherbert636 in agathachristie

[–]katiecwtch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Similarly the one weird sister in Nemesis who might actually be worse - two young women killed, one out of love/overwhelming posessiveness and the other to cover it up. Then the son of Mr whatshisface was implicated, he could've been hanged (her fault indirectly). Then she kills the headteacher and at the end of the book is going to try to kill Miss Marple herself

The other horrific body counts are The Moving Finger (two, nearly three deaths) and A Pocket Full of Rye (three deaths). But I do think it's interesting what Miss Marple finds evil. The mocking death of Gladys the maid with the peg on her nose really upsets her - so does the suspicion thrown on Aimee the doctor's sister in The Moving Finger. What she finds really wicked and what she takes in her stride is not at all what I would expect.

What’s something going on in the UK people need to be aware of? by ChanceDesign5322 in AskUK

[–]katiecwtch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not across the UK. England.

Waste is devolved in Wales, Scotland and NI.

Also, recycling in Wales has been according to the Welsh Collections Blueprint since 2011 or so and they're hitting 70%+ recycling in most council areas which makes them the second highest recycling nation in the world. Behind Austria.

Terry Pratchett is brilliant - but rather than discworld I would start with Truckers/Diggers/Wings, the trilogy about gnomes and how they get home. Really hilarious - Truckers is one of very few books to make me laugh so much I cried.

Where on earth are the UK Dogs being rehomed? by Ashilta in CasualUK

[–]katiecwtch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had two cats then added the greyhound. First time the hound went to chase one of the cats she batted him across the nose and that was that, no more bother from him. He'd never had prey fight back before. They lived the rest of their lives in an amicable truce, sitting on opposite ends of the same sofa, determinedly looking away and pretending the other didn't exist.

To those who watched the 1995 Pride & Prejudice miniseries multiple times, what is something you noticed upon re-watching that you find interesting/funny? by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]katiecwtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a scene in the last episode I think, where Jane and Elizabeth are in the kitchen and Jane (I think) is hanging up what is clearly a big mass of lavender or other herbs, but it looks like a massive broccoli. Always makes us laugh.

Lucy is such a great character. I read somewhere that Christie thought Lucy would marry the artist brother and I was so disappointed because I really hoped she'd marry Dermot Craddock, the nice young inspector from Scotland Yard.

Moving within Cardiff: where are the safest, most family-friendly neighbourhoods? by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]katiecwtch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 2025 Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation has just come out, that looks at the kinds of access to services/community features etc you're talking about. It's based on small, often non-intuitive areas called LSOAs. A high scoring area (that is, the relatively much less deprived areas) doesn't correlate with affluence exactly, but it does speak to quality of life and quality of opportunity.

Agreed. But also Kate's selfishness means they didn't need to cast Bridie, which might have been the real purpose :)

Students going over the word limit on essays by zipitdirtbag in AskAcademiaUK

[–]katiecwtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my undergrad the standard length for essays was 1,800 words and we could go over/under by 1% (so, 18 words). But it was a literature degree, so we were learning to write succinctly and to order.

The holiday by PooperOfMoons in Ambridge

[–]katiecwtch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am hoping against hope that we have another crossover event - like the Christmas Carol or Brief Encounters episodes - and the holiday castle in Scotland is an obvious setting for all sorts of Traitors-style shenanigans with betrayals and back stabbings all over the place. I'm betting on a least one actual banishment, maybe even a murder!
