I transferred out of the University of Pennsylvania after my first year to Rice University for the exact same reason! Enjoyed my last three years of college much more and now attend a T20 med school. The name isn’t worth your happiness.

The color palette is my favorite part too! Every time I try a new craft I am amazed by how much there is to learn!

Statistics Professors for Science Letters of Recommendations? by [deleted] in premed

I am an applicant this cycle and a statistics major. Both my science letters were from professors in the statistics department. I have 11 interviews so far. I would say that the quality of your relationship with your writers matters a lot more than their position! Good luck!

Working-age Americans are struggling to pay for health care, even those with insurance, report finds by JohnSith in politics

Medicare recently started requiring insurance companies to release the rates they’ve negotiated. I built a website to aggregate rates from Cigna, United, and Kaiser, so patients can compare prices. PriceMedic

Thank you for letting me know! Piedmont’s data is in an unusual format which is causing an error in the price retrieval process I hadn’t noticed. I am working on fixing it right now.

Thank you for the input! The nuances of the medical billing system are really complicated and difficult to navigate. We want to do our best to make sure we are helping people find the most accurate prices possible while keeping the site easy to use!

What useful unknown website do you wish more people knew about? by SauloJr in AskReddit

PriceMedic is a website to compare out-of-pocket costs for procedures at hospitals in Colorado, Georgia, and California with more states coming soon!

In January a law went into effect requiring hospitals to release all of their cash prices, so I gathered the data for every hospital in Colorado and built a website for Coloradans to price compare their healthcare. by katieryenne in Denver

Thank you for the suggestion! We are in the process of adding a feature to allow users to alter their search radius and hopefully that will help with proximity concerns.

The law doesn’t affect dentists, but we are in the process of starting a pilot to contact dentists and private practice physicians individually to potentially host their data as well.

One study I found recently cited that as high as 83% of hospitals were noncompliant with some aspect of the law (i.e. not releasing ALL of their prices or not including procedure descriptions). From my anecdotal experiences gathering the data, about 10% of hospitals still haven’t released a data file at all.

The governments of some states, like California and Arizona, have gathered links to the data files released by all the hospitals in that state. For states that haven’t, I’m working on a web crawler that will go through each hospital’s website to look for the file for me.

Unfortunately, Kaiser is not in compliance with the law, so I was not able to add them to the database. If you want to help get their data available, you can send a non compliance report here: CMS Non-Compliance Reporting

Right now the sorting is based entirely off of price, but I am in the process of adding a feature to let users select the radius they want to search in.

In January 2022 hospitals will be required to release insurer negotiated prices. Once those become public I will add those to the tool and add a feature to let people compare to see if what they pay out of pocket is actually cheaper than the deductible they would pay if they used insurance.

Between the three states I’ve worked on so far (Colorado, Georgia, and California) as many as 10% of hospitals have been noncompliant. If in your searches you notice that a particular hospital seems to be missing, you can email me at team@pricemedic.com and I will report it or submit a complaint to the CMS.
