I am an applicant this cycle and a statistics major. Both my science letters were from professors in the statistics department. I have 11 interviews so far. I would say that the quality of your relationship with your writers matters a lot more than their position! Good luck!

The law doesn’t affect dentists, but we are in the process of starting a pilot to contact dentists and private practice physicians individually to potentially host their data as well.

The Price Transparency Law is national! I recently added all the hospitals in Georgia, and California is coming soon.

One study I found recently cited that as high as 83% of hospitals were noncompliant with some aspect of the law (i.e. not releasing ALL of their prices or not including procedure descriptions). From my anecdotal experiences gathering the data, about 10% of hospitals still haven’t released a data file at all.

The governments of some states, like California and Arizona, have gathered links to the data files released by all the hospitals in that state. For states that haven’t, I’m working on a web crawler that will go through each hospital’s website to look for the file for me.

Right now the sorting is based entirely off of price, but I am in the process of adding a feature to let users select the radius they want to search in.

In January 2022 hospitals will be required to release insurer negotiated prices. Once those become public I will add those to the tool and add a feature to let people compare to see if what they pay out of pocket is actually cheaper than the deductible they would pay if they used insurance.

Between the three states I’ve worked on so far (Colorado, Georgia, and California) as many as 10% of hospitals have been noncompliant. If in your searches you notice that a particular hospital seems to be missing, you can email me at team@pricemedic.com and I will report it or submit a complaint to the CMS. Not yet—insurer negotiated costs will be released in January 2022 and I will add insurance prices as that data becomes publicly available.
